REFLECTIONS OF THE PRESIDENT

Shanti Auluck

Muskaan as a social development organization is at the cross roads where some clear choices

have to be made keeping in mind the future of Muskaan. One thing is absolutely clear to my

mind that it should always remain focused on enhancing the quality of life of children and adults

with Intellectual Disability who still live marginal and neglected existence in our society.

Acceptance and respect for differences and providing growth opportunities and dignified life is

Page 3: ANNUAL REPORT - Muskaan the NGOmuskaanthengo.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Muskaan-PAEPID-AN… · This year we moved a step further in getting bulk orders during Diwali. Muskaan

essential for that. We should stop seeing them with the lens of disability and appreciate the

different view of the world that they bring with them.

Securing future of persons with ID (intellectual disability) and their families depends upon

securing Muskaan’s future as a progressive, responsive, transparent and efficient organization.

We have to maintain NGO spirit but build a corporate efficiency. That means efficient and

responsive management systems, openness to new learnings and adopts best practices wherever

we need, high sense of accountability on the part of every member of Muskaan team, creative

initiative in all students related program, individualized understanding of each and every

student and constant up-gradation of knowledge and understanding.

In order to achieve the above, Muskaan needs another strategic plan to initiate necessary changes

in the way we develop action plans for next five years. This will be a collective exercise of

Muskaan team which would include all stakeholders including volunteers with proficiency in

related fields.

The sector of ID looks up to Muskaan as a model which has yielded successful results in training

and employment as well as assisted living provided in a group home. Muskaan also created

effective models of awareness building, advocacy and family support services. We owe a lot of

responsibility and accountability for constant up-gradation of that.

MUSKAAN PROGRAMS The focus of all our programs is capacity building of our students with intellectually challenged

and their families. When it comes to education of minds, it never has a limit. Experience of

working with students keeps giving us new ideas and insights and thereby prompting us to

bring modifications in curriculum and its transaction. The following section gives a brief about

such developments.

Students’ development program

Over the last few years, Muskaan has been receiving lot of visitors from Pan India & across

globe. These are primarily parents and professionals working for persons with IDD. They are

interested in understanding the Muskaan’s various models of services for persons with IDD and

replicate it in their locations. This brings lot of pride and satisfaction amongst the team at

Muskaan along with a much larger responsibility to maintain the quality of services and keep

evolving our programs.

Highlights of Activity Centre - It mainly caters to persons with high support needs of various

kinds (physical, emotional, communication, learning etc.). The focus of training this year was to

increase their attention span in activities, develop acceptable social behavior, build concepts

Page 4: ANNUAL REPORT - Muskaan the NGOmuskaanthengo.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Muskaan-PAEPID-AN… · This year we moved a step further in getting bulk orders during Diwali. Muskaan

required in daily functioning, and pre-vocational skills. This was achieved by organizing Fun

based sports activities, Computer based activities, skill building workshops, outings to various

places and participation in larger events of Muskaan like Festival celebrations. Total numbers of

students under this program are thirty five and seven regular staff members, six activity teachers

and four volunteers are engaged with them.

Senior group Program– This program is specially designed for senior age group. A major change

in this program was brought by reducing the working hours for our senior adults due to

reducing physical stamina & frequent health issues. A significant change was seen in their

attendance after that and also, they started enjoying their activities more. The number of adults

in this program is thirteen and two regular staff members and five activity teachers are engaged

with them.

Data Entry Training Program- This program has seen success as two of our students were

employed by a corporate as Data Entry operators in Oct 2017. For rest of them we have been

generating work from Muskaan office to train them in understanding timelines, targets & quality

of work. We have also assigned few more responsibilities to them which were being performed

by staff members. These small assignments on regular basis have led to better confidence among

them as well as communication & social skills. There are sixteen students and one regular

teacher, four activity teachers are working with them.

Along with the above-mentioned training programs, all students receive regular inputs in

Physical fitness, Sports & recreational activities; computer-based activities, life Skills, and

need based therapy. Up-gradation of vocational skills is an essential component of all our

vocational skills programs.

Muskaan East Extension Centre- In July 2017, Muskaan opened its first extension centre for

Vocational Training in Sahibabad. It has been possible with the support of Mrs. Kavita Tomer, a

parent who gave her house for running it and her voluntary services for managing it. One senior

faculty member from Muskaan was dedicated to develop the program, train the teacher and

work with parents. The first year of its operation has been challenging but the program is now

settling down gradually. Presently there are-seven students, one regular teacher, two part time

staff, one volunteer and one mentor.

Assisted /supported Employment Centre

Supported employment within Muskaan- The focus of this year was to train the students in

new tasks of the same vocational activities as the product range, designs & packing styles have

been changing. Monthly workshops were held in each vocational unit to this effect with follow

up in daily routine work. This resulted in enhanced capacities of all units as students were able

to take up new responsibilities. Presently thirty three work associates and thirty one students are

placed in Supported employment within Muskaan. Fourteen regular teachers, four activity

teachers and many volunteers are engaged with them. We also reviewed criteria for moving to

work centre along with grades of stipend.

Supported Employment outside Muskaan- The highlight of this year was increase in

networking and recognition of our model of training & placements by many NGOs, Employment

partners and Global organizations. People showed interest in understanding and replicating our

model in their area of work. We started training in four new sites involving ten trainees.

Employment of eleven candidates was confirmed during the year, some of whom have been

placed in previous year. We conducted sixteen sensitization & re-sensitization programs during

the year for various employers. Sixty four review sessions were conducted for various sites

(monthly, quarterly & bi-annual) to track progression of trainees and employed adults with ID.

As a result of these reviews, refresher training/advanced training was conducted at various sites

for our trainees/ employed adults.

We also presented our success and achievements in open employment at various conferences,

workshops, seminars represented by not only the trainers but also our Young adults. Vinyas Rao

& Puneet Auluck made presentations at two National Conferences.

Product Development & Marketing

This year we moved a step further in getting bulk orders during Diwali. Muskaan products are

being picked up for corporate gifts, weddings and conferences. It has helped in having regular

work for students throughout the year. Bulk orders involve lot of packing apart from production

of items which generates more work for students. On the other hand it reduces stress on other

resources which are required in venue sales.

This year, we applied for getting FSSAI License with all due preparations happening over last

one year. Few new Products were introduced in Units:

Bakery & Food: Baked mathi, Baked namakpara, Variety of chocolates.

Stationary: Different sizes and shapes of gift bags, greeting cards.

Our Regular Customers include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Bloo Nimboo Voyages, Times

Internet, Gulati Foods Pvt.Ltd., Tripti Foods, Competent Software Pvt.Ltd., Ambedkar

University, Fab cafe, Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Smart Analyst Pvt. Ltd, Lemon Tree

Hotels, Japanese Volunteer Group, Inner Wheel Club.

We have been taking our products to these Schools & Colleges: Apeejay School, Ramjas School,

St.Mark’s School, St. Columba’s School, Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Acharya Narendra dev College,

Lady Shri Ram College, School Of Inspired Learning, Shiv Nadar School.

Volunteers from different schools and colleges have participated in our awareness programs and

marketing of our products.

Staff Development Program

This year also we organised capacity building workshops for teachers in the month of June 2017

on varied topics e.g. developing Curriculum on vocational training, life skills training, criteria for

placement in supported employment center within & outside Muskaan. We also organised few

workshops throughout the year on various topics of interest to our team. Few of the team

members also attended workshops organised by other institutes. Some professionals from

leadership team of the Muskaan made presentations in various forums about Intellectual

Disability and Successful Models of services created by Muskaan.

Muskaan's Residential Facility

When we visualize an ideal residential facility or a group home we always think of creating one

as community living model. At Muskaan also we have created a facility on the principles of

assisted living and as kind of community living. There are three families living on the same

complex and children of other staff members spend time with our residents. It is an inclusive set

up where we all live, celebrate and share sorrows together. We are sharing few highlights and

achievements of this year here.

The year started with lots of excitement and hope of getting extension of lease of the complex for

a longer period. We approached all the concerned offices and ministries to get lease of MPCC

extended. Many Govt. Officials Including SDM, Mehrauli, National trust and State commissioner

for Persons with Disabilities, Delhi visited the facility, met residents and interacted with staff. All

of them have given an excellent inspection report appreciating the services created by Muskaan.

But due to no response from officials for extension of lease it has created an uncertainty in the

minds of parents and Muskaan for sustainability, due to which we did not take any more

admissions or invested on infrastructure.

Highlights

S.No. Areas Activities

1. Residents related Total 18 Beneficiaries (12 Males & 6 Females ) are

living in the facility . Didn’t take more admission due

to delay in extension of lease of MPC ,Dera village .

Activities Introduced a New Activity of Knitting for making

Mufflers. Two of our senior staff members

received training. The trained teacher simplified the

steps to provide training to two residents. The project

is on trial runs.

Other activities of making windchimes, keychains,

door hangings, embroidered mattie bags were

structured

Recreation and

celebrations

In May residents went for an outing at SPLASH

WATER PARK.

To strengthen Recreation program football, basketball

, Carom board with stand, Jenga sets etc were

procured.

In December Mr.&Mrs.Anand Jain spent few hours

with the residents making them enjoy by playing

Musical chair,tombola, cards and Jenga

We celebrate all the national and regional festivals.

Two festivals Janmashtami and Dussehra are

celebrated with great enthusiasm. On Janmashtami

Krishan Jhanki was presented by residents and staff

children. On Dushera ten feet tall Effigy of Ravana

was made and burnt by the residents & staff.

2. Fund raising Inner Wheel club Donated 2 Steel tables for Kitchen .

Received Grocery from Main Tendue and Mrs. Rani

Mahant. One time donations for kitchen were brought

by two individuals .

3. Medical support and

Fitness

A Dental Camp was organised by MRU for screening

and treatment of Muskaan Residents and staff.

Donations raised to improve in-house facility for First

Aid and fitness. Brought heat pads , Ultrasonic

Machine along with medicine boxes & thermometers

For fitness program brought pully exercises, thera

bands, weight cuffs.

4. Team Building This year Muskaan's Residential team initiated a very

interesting activity to improve bonding among staff

and residents. We planned to celebrate birthdays of

staff and students together every quarter. Every one

contributed money and time towards this plan. We

enjoyed these celebrations and received Gifts.

A get together was organized for staff in May which

included Rain Dance and Food.

This project is having three Major challenges:

First, delay in the grant of extension of lease of MPCC complex by Delhi Govt. to National Trust.

Next, the increasing need of human support during hospitalization of our residents. Although

now the expenses are born by parents / guardians but in future it will add more financial &

physical challenges when parents are not alive.

Last but not the least, service Staff turnover- We train people and they leave within six months.

The cycle of searching for the right person, training them and availing of their services takes lots

of energy.

Family Support services

Approximately 240 certificates were issued in 3 months (April to June 2018) at AIIMS with

facilitation by our team. From July 2017 onwards AIIMS has stopped issuing certificates at

Genetics Dept. as there is no psychologist on panel.

At Muskaan, due to increase in demand, counseling days have been increased to 3 days

(Tues,Wed &Thur) in a week and till now 104 cases have been taken up. Out of this 95 cases were

for admission and 9 cases were for psychological issues For psychological issues usually

counseling is needed periodically for few months or years. After untimely death of Dr.Sahajpal,

Dr.Savita Sapra, an experienced psychologist retired from AIIMS is continuing with counseling

services . 20 of the candidates are coming for home base program.

Medical support- This year a lot of effort was put in by Muskaan team for facilitation of Medical

services for our students. A multi-services health camp was organized for all students including

various specialists like Eye, ENT, Dental, Ortho, and General physician. We have developed a

good contact with Dr.Savita Puri from Delhi Medical Council .She is developing referral list for

muskaan students and families for medical consultations in Delhi/NCR.

We organized annual PTMs for all the parents which were attended by 89 parents in May 2017.

Another PTM was organized for training groups in Nov 2017 which was attended by 30 parents.

Awareness & advocacy

In last few years activities undertaken in this program have increased considerably. Many more

schools, institutes, corporates and organizations from different parts of world visited us to know

about working of Muskaan. Muskaan participated and supported several awareness initiatives of

Community participation

Muskaan has been quite a popular destination with students for their internship. Students from

schools, colleges and professional institutes keep approaching Muskaan for doing their

internship. Interns come with educational backgrounds like Psychology, Human Development,

Special Education, Social Work, and various Management fields. It provides them an

opportunity to work with an important social cause and Muskaan too gets their support in areas

where we need volunteers to take up few projects. We are impressed by their sensitivity,

sincerity and commitment.

At Muskaan, we plan a special program for each one of the interns based on the objectives of

their internship as defined by their parent organisation and sensitisation & awareness of

Muskaan’s work in the field of Intellectual Disability. In each case an individual supervisor is

appointed from Muskaan team who guides the interns to make it a gainful learning experience

for them and in the process ensure their commitment to work during this period. This year we

trained eleven interns from Institutes like Lady Irwin College, School of Inspired Leadership,

Action For Autism, Indian Management Institute and School of Social Work at Jamia Millia

University.

Apart from these we have a regular inflow of volunteers from various schools & colleges. They

are also given an orientation and then placed in different units so that they can interact with our

students and understand their strengths and challenges.

Thanks & gratitude

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to all those people who supported us to make all the

above mentioned activities & programs possible. We have always believed in maintaining

transparency in our functioning so that each of the supporters can have full visibility of our

styles of operation. It has led to an increasing faith on Muskaan from community which includes:
