PAKISTAN WORLDWIDE. AS AN EMERGING SOCIETY, THE SPIE GIKI CHAPTER IS THE GROWING LEGACY OF THOSE WHO

SEEK TO LEARN, DISCOVER AND INNOVATE BY CREATING, PROMOTING AND SUSTAINING A MULTIFACETED PLATFORM FOR

PHOTONICS, PHOTO-OPTICS AND INSTRUMENTATION. THE GIKI CHAPTER ALSO HAS STRONG ASSOCIATIONS WITH BOTH

INDIGENOUS AND FOREIGN COMPANIES AND ACADEMIC/TECHNICAL COLLABORATION IN THE FORM OF SEMINARS AND

WORKSHOPS IS A FREQUENT EXPERIENCE FOR MEMBERS. REGULAR VISITS AND TOURS, TO SOME OF THE LATEST

ENGINEERING COMPLEXES, ARE CONDUCTED TO FACILITATE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE.

3RD NATIONAL OPTICS CONVENTION

After the immense success of 2nd All Pakistan Optics Olympiad 2012 (APOO’12), this year SPIE GIKI

chapter organized its 3rd variant. National Optics Convention (NOC’14) was organized by SPIE GIKI chapter

from 25-27 April, 2014. This event attracted a large number of participants from all over Pakistan who came

to GIKI to compete with one another. To keep the participants involved and give an entertaining touch to the

entire weekend, social events were also organized. One of the distinguishing highlights of NOC’14 were the

motivational speeches that were given by some of the most prominent and exceptional individuals and

leaders of Pakistan such as Prof Ahsan Iqbal (Federal Minister Planning and Development), who inaugurated

NOC’14 and emphasized on the need for the integration of education into our society and the role that the

enthusiastic youth of Pakistan has to play in it. On the second day Mr. Asad Umar (Industrialist) was

welcomed by GIKI who also graced us with his words and expanded on the importance of discipline and the

crucial need for research and development that is missing in our educational system.

TECHNICAL MODULES FOR NOC’14:

1) SPIE PROJECT EXHIBITION

SPIE Project Exhibition is a competition in which a constelation of engineering students are invited to

present their projects. The essence of the event is to offer a platform to express and get acknowledged

without the discrimination of specific fields. The projects presented were ( are, or ) from : Optics, Lasers,

Photonics, Electronics, Photo-Electronics, Optical Communication, Instrumentation, Optical

Semiconductors, Electronic Imaging, Biomedical Optics, Photovoltaic, Optical Energy and Power,

Micro/Nanolithography, MEMS, and MOEMS, Applied Remote Sensing and Nano-photonics.

The students participating get an oppurtunity to get acquainted with the industrial sector of the country.

The studentsget a chance to meet experts from various fields and get insights to their future. Since the

event is publicized by electronic and print media they could air their ideas to numerous brains outside

their scope.

2) SPIE TECHNICAL POSTER COMPETITION

A poster can add visual interest to your topic and helps to keep your audience pivoted on the message

of your presentation. They can serve as promotional advertising at product exhibitions or trade fairs.

They are not just only used in advertising but also find use in delivering the message or a concept

effectively. So in short, poster designing is an important thing to learn. The better you do it, the more

good it will do to you. Thus to instantiate this piece of creative synthesis into every participant's mind the

TECHNICAL POSTER COMPETITION is held. SPIE is the society which provides the platform for the

students around Pakistan to come forward with their bright technical ideas and present them by making

an attractive and effective poster.

3) LED PUBLICITY IDEA

Today's world is spinning around on the art of selling your ideas.Publicity is an art. So how does a person

sell his/her idea's ? Yes! By publicizing. In this time we are living in the publicity is widely done by the

usage of LED's. The skirmishing colors of the LED's grab the attention of a person and whichis a major

factor for the success of your product. Keeping that aspect in mind, SPIE wants to give its participants a

touch of LED publicity to help them develop their publicity skills. In this competition, contestants will be

expected to design and implement a publicity model on a given theme, using LEDs and connecting wires.

A board will be provided to pin LEDs on it. After completing the design, wiring will have to be done to

make the model operative.

4) IQ QUIZ

How intelligent are you? Are you better than the others in expending your mind? A question often asked

by one to himself. SPIE IQ quiz is designed to answer your self-inflicted questions, a competition where

you will compete with the best minds of the country and winning will be a feat not so easy to

accomplish. It's not only a competition its a self motivational drive which makes your brain starve for

more!

5) INNOVATION CHALLENGE

Entrepreneurship is one of the vibrant engines of our economy and an essential source of growth,

energy, and creativity. Entrepreneurship can positively impact a learner at all levels in a wide number of

contexts. SPIE Business Innovation challenge is the meant to identify creative and motivated students by

providing a platform for them to show off their entrepreneurial talents. Business Innovation challenge

would inspire them to develop their business ideas from general concept to market.

4) GIKI-SDSU International Symposium on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

The GIKI-SDSU International Symposium on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells was a 3 day

symposium aimed at harvesting low cost solar energy. It was a collaboration of GIK Institute,

SDSU USA, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and USAID. The event was also the start

of collaboration between GIKI and South Dakota State University for Student Internship

Program. SPIE Members organized this Symposium with great success.

A training session on the fabrication/characterization of organic electronic and photonic devices

was held. This symposium was an opportunity for participants from industry and academia to

interact with some of the leading foreign and national scientists actively involved in the DSSC

research. It also provided an opportunity to young researchers, especially students, to interact
