National Meeting OSA and SPIE Student Chapters
September, 2012 – June, 2013

We attended the third national meeting of OSA and SPIE chapters. We shared experiences and information to
improve our chapter activities. The most important of the meeting was met the new officers of each Mexican
Student Chapters.
Coffee Science
October, 2012 (Starting date)

Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico Coffee Science has place almost monthly. It is an open and outdoors space for students, teachers and
researchers to share experiences in science, study and personal life. This is achieved by having a space where
one or more scientific researchers are interviewed about their job, memories of their student years, etc.
After the talk, there is a time to chat with the invited researchers about specific projects that the students are
interested in, and time to play Keth too. During the last ten months the Coffee Science has had the
participation of nine researchers in seven Coffee Sciences.
Below we list the dates on which the event has been held:
1. October 26th, 2012.
2. November 23rd, 2012.
3. December 14th, 2012.
4. February 15th, 2013.
5. March 22nd, 2013.
6. May 10th, 2013.
7. June 7th, 2013.
Along this time the Coffee Science has had the participation of 300 persons approximately. And it has had very
different topics but all focused in science, and all trying to get the attention of the bachelor students in
different fields of the science.
Visiting lecture by the PhD Malacara Hernández Daniel

During his visit the PhD Daniel Malacara Hérnandez had two conferences. The first one was “Scientific Texts”
and the last one was “Hartmann and Hartmann Shack”. After the conferences the PhD Daniel had a visit to the
Optical Instrumentation Lab, and after it, him and some chapter members were to the International Book Fair.
Winter workshops

Workshops organized by chapter members. There were seven workshops. The subjects were: Linux, OpenCV,
PLC Automation, Local Area Networks, NI Labview, Unmaned Aerial Vehicles and PCB design. And almost fifty
people attended these workshops. The workshops’ teachers were chapter’s members. And the main idea was
transmit knowledge of some tools used for scientific and technological projects.
Pizza Party

After the end of the Winter Workshops we had a Pizza Party. Were we talked and had fun together.
National Meeting OSA and SPIE Student Chapters
April 24th – 26th, 2013
Monterrey, N.L. Mexico
This event was the fourth national meeting of student chapters and it was during the Applied Optics
Symposium, Sustainability and Energy.
Besides attending the symposium, all chapters’ members shared activities and we talked about new projects to
work like student chapter network.
Visiting the Research Center in Optics (CIO)
May 17th, 2013.
Leon, Gto. Mexico.
This visit was organized by CIO and Universidad de Guadalajara student chapters. During the visit, the
Universidad de Guadalajara students had a tour into the CIO’s Labs, CIO’s museum and the opportunity to talk
with some CIO’s researchers. Also it was a great chance to both chapter members to spend time together.
Science for kids
June 27th, 2013
Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico.
We invited children between ten and twelve years old to visit our campus (CUCEI) and learn some basic
principles of physics by playing. We received approximately 60 kids.
The visit started with a welcome speech by the PhD Guillermo García Torales. After this, the children were
divided in six groups. Every group started the tour in a different workshop where they stayed some time, and
after that they had to go to a different workshop. The kids, visitor teachers and chapter members had a lunch
together.
Summer workshops
July, 2013
Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico.
Workshops organized by chapter members. There five six workshops. The subjects were: Matlab, Arduino, PLC
Automation, Biomedical Optics and Poster Design. Like fifty people attended these workshops. The workshops’
teachers were members of the chapter. And the main idea was transmit a practical knowledge of some tools
used for scientific and technological projects.
Tacos Party

After the end of the Summer Workshops we had a Tacos Party. We talked and had fun together.
San Diego, SPIE Optics + Photonics 2013

On August 2013, some of our chapter’s members attended the SPIE Optics and Photonics held in San Diego, California, where they met students from other countries and presented the result of their research project.

We have a web page and we are also in the social networks to reach more students, so that they know about

Planned activities for the future

Website
Description: Updating and reorganizing our website so it is easier to website visitors to get relevant information
and to know who to communicate with and how to subscribe to our student chapter.
Visiting Lecture Program
Description: Thanks to the SPIE Visiting Lecture Program and the OSA Traveling Lecture Program, the chapter
will organize a couple of conferences with researchers from other countries as some other activities as
workshops and social meetings with the chapter and the invited researcher.
Chapter meeting
Description: To improve the relationship between our chapter members, this winter will be a “Posada”, a party
for all the members and people willing to be part of the chapter.
Visiting high school
Description: Taking the invitation of several physics professors, the SPIE student chapter will be visiting several
high-schools showing the activities of the chapter and making and approaching optics to young students from
our community.
Coffee Science
Description: Chat with a guest lecturer, free coffee and Khet tournament to gather new students. An
opportunity to let other students and professors know about the Chapter, the projects and the activities we do.
This is an event that we plan to organize on a monthly basis.
Meeting others SPIE Mexican Student Chapters
Description: Invite and visit other universities and/or research centers that have SPIE Student Chapter, to build
and strengthen working ties with them and share ideas.
