essage Where does the time go?

It’s hard to believe that we are well into the new school year, but that’s a fact. It’s also a fact that the 2009-2010 year was another very successful one for Molloy.

Once again, our enrollment climbed and that trend continued as we kicked off the 2010-2011 year. The number of students we serve continues to grow, and the quality of our students (measured by their SAT scores) improved as well.

While there are exciting developments in all of our academic departments, there is no question that one of the highlights of the year was the approval we received to offer Molloy’s first doctoral degree, a Ph.D. in Nursing. It takes years to gain approval for a Ph.D. program and I want to thank and congratulate the many people who worked so hard on this project. As you read this, our first cohort of Ph.D. candidates are on campus and working hard toward their doctorates. They are the first, but others (in Nursing and in other programs as well) will soon follow in their footsteps.

As we launched the 2010-2011 academic year, we were pleased to receive two honors for the second consecutive year. Once again, Molloy was named a “Best in the Northeast” college by the prestigious Princeton Review and one of the best regional universities by U.S. News and World Report. Both of these honors are a clear indication of the overall strength of our academic programs.

During the past year, we broke ground on the new Public Square student center/theatre, which will open, along with our first residence hall, in Fall 2011. The cam-pus is a “work in progress” this year, but we are all excited to see the “new Molloy” that is coming.

Our student-athletes compete in NCAA Division II, and there were some out-standing accomplishments last year. First, the women’s basketball team won the con-ference title and earned a spot in the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years. Then the women’s softball team wrapped-up a great season by becoming one of only eight teams in the entire country to advance to the Division II College World Series. Congratulations to these teams, their coaches, and all of our student-athletes who work so hard to balance academics, athletics and the other activities that make up their college experience.

The cover features Molloy’s beautiful four-pillar banner. We unveiled the ban-ner earlier this year, but felt it was deserving of additional attention in this publica-tion. The four pillars capture the roots of our Dominican heritage, with its emphasis on study, spirituality, service and community, and the banner is the perfect comple-ment to our Mission Statement (on opposite page).

Thanks to all of you who helped make 2009-2010 so special. I anticipate that the current year will be even better.

Drew Bogner, Ph.D.President

A Molloy education is an experience that transcends the

classroom in remarkable ways. As you would expect,

Molloy students are taught by incredibly talented

academic professionals, but there is something distinctive about a

Molloy education—the drive to reach out beyond the classroom

walls and make a difference in the lives of others.

You can see what makes Molloy unique in the dedication to

service, participation in charitable events and a drive to lead that is

exhibited by our graduates. Molloy alumni understand that they

can truly make a difference in the world in which we live, and this

belief is a direct manifestation of our Dominican roots.

Saint Dominic de Guzman, who founded the Dominican Order

of Preachers in 1216, believed that four essential elements – study,

spirituality, service and community – would act as the catalyst for

change and enlightenment throughout the world. Molloy em-

braced this belief during our opening day festivities for the 2009-

2010 academic year, when we unveiled four beautifully illustrated

banners.

1. Community is depicted by an autumn-themed illustration.

Autumn is the time when the Molloy community comes together

to start the academic year, recognizes changes in our group and

celebrates diversity.

2. Spirituality is represented by a vision of winter—the season of

going within, being still, being aware of silence and darkness.

3. Study is portrayed as a spring image, which demonstrates new

growth, new life and new ideas.

4. Service is equated to summer, the season when everything is in

full bloom, and when we share the abundance of who we are with

others around us.

Each Molloy community member works to incorporate ele-

ments from each of the four pillars within their own lives. Over the

last twelve months, we have had many examples that illustrate how

the Dominican traditions bind our Molloy College family.

5

Page 6: Annual Report of the President - 2009-2010

t Molloy, we build community. The two new facilities

under construction are both designed to help us achieve

that goal.

We are excited that the new student center and first-ever

residence hall will be completed for the Fall 2011 semester. “The

residence hall and Public Square will be great additions to the

campus,” said Robert Houlihan, Vice President, Student Affairs.

“Each will add to the social growth of our students. We will have

a more diverse population from around the region attending our

events on and off campus.”

During the annual President’s Award Ceremony we came to-

gether to recognize many Molloy employees and individuals who

have helped us fulfill our mission as a college. Special members

of the external community, Marty and Sue Bevilacqua and Rita

Cleary, were recognized during the ceremony. The Bevilacquas

received the President’s Medal and Mrs. Cleary was awarded the

St. Catherine of Siena Medal. Their philanthropy, support and

devotion to the College have helped to strengthen our commu-

nity, and they are wonderful examples of individuals embodying

the Dominican tradition.

Our annual Homecoming

Weekend brought the College

constituency out in force. Alum-

ni, students, faculty and staff,

as well as members of the local

community, enjoyed watching

athletic events and participating

in many wonderful opportunities

to reconnect with old friends and

make new ones. “Homecoming is a chance to celebrate the new academic year and extend

an invitation to our alumni and the outside community to visit the campus and take part in a

number of special activities,” said Catherine Muscente '02, '08, Director of Development.

In the sports arena we were all riveted as we watched the Molloy Lady Lions basket-

ball team win their conference title to advance to the NCAA tournament. Then a few

months later, the Lady Lions softball team became one of only eight teams in the country

to advance to the NCAA Division II World Series. “The opportunity to travel to Missouri

and compete for the national championship was amazing,” said Susan Cassidy-Lyke, '86,

Athletic Director. “It was rewarding to see that all the hard work, travel and early morning

practices truly paid off. The support and encouragement they received from everyone here

at Molloy made the experience even more meaningful.”

The Siena Women's

Center's Annual Voices

of Women Symposium,

“Gender Equity in the 21st

Century: Reigniting the

Fire,” brought together

women from both the

internal and external Molloy

community as we celebrated

the amazing contributions of

women to society. “Those

of us in the contemporary

women’s movement –

from the 1970s on – stood

upon the shoulders of the

wonderful women who came

before us,” said Dr. Sherry

Radowitz, Molloy College Lady Lions at NCAA College World Series.

“Our passion for causes, our community investments, and

our unique stories continue to build our region’s legacy…

the history of the women’s movement on Long Island.”

Our Sustainability Institute was instrumental in orches-

trating our Green Summit/Joseph F. Maher Leadership

Forum, which brought together the Molloy community,

“green” business leaders, and politicians to discuss the future

of sustainable business and industry. Participants included

Alfonse D’Amato, former U.S. Senator and founder of Park

Strategies, LLC; Kevin S. Law, former President and CEO,

Long Island Power Authority; Steve Bellone, Supervisor,

Town of Babylon; Neal Lewis, Executive Director of The

Sustainability Institute; and Richard Kessel, President and

CEO, New York Power Authority. “Molloy continues to be

at the center of pertinent discussion and informative debate,”

said Edward Thompson, Vice President for Advancement.

“We were thrilled to host this event, which reinforced the

importance of finding sustainable solutions for the Long

Island region.”

Spirituality is an essential component of life at Molloy.

Aside from the daily celebration of Mass on campus,

there are many ways in which the concept of spirituality

enters into our lives. A major effort this year was our annual Earth

Week celebration, which included educational presentations from

environmentally focused groups.

“Part of our social responsibility is to be good stewards of the

Earth so that future generations can enjoy what we have,” said

Elisabeth Fiteni, Program Director, The Sustainability Institute

at Molloy College. “Earth Week is a reminder of this responsibil-

ity, and serves to educate and inspire students in a fun way about

how we can reduce our impact on our environment. An integral

component of spirituality is contemplation about one’s role, one’s

beliefs and what one’s future actions will be. There were many

opportunities during Earth Week to gather information to fuel

the internal journey for our community members.”

Sister Diane Capuano, O.P., Assistant Director of Campus

Ministries, also headed-up an off-site, Earth-based retreat. The

retreat provided participants with time to contemplate their place

in the world and to find peace

amidst the noise that surrounds

their lives. “Our Earth-based

retreats provide one with an

opportunity to get away for just

a little while,” said Sister Diane.

“Quite often, we get so caught

up in the day-to-day routines of

our lives that we forget to take

time to re-focus and re-connect

with ourselves, God, others and all of creation.”

Also on campus, we joined together to learn about, and to show support for, the people

of Haiti who were affected by a devastating earthquake. The Office of Mission hosted an

event designed to raise awareness on campus about the plight of the Haitian community.

The attendees listened to first-hand accounts from people who visited the small country

after the tragic event. They spoke of the need for humanitarian aid and shared stories of the

deep faith of the Haitian people. The presentation called for action from the Molloy Com-

munity, action that would work to restore the spirit of the devastated communities. Attend-

ees were moved by the presentation and wanted to make a difference for the Haitian people

affected by the earthquake. As a result of the event, members of the Molloy community

signed-on to provide aid to a

small school in Haiti.

The Molloy College

Institute for Interfaith

Dialogue also continued to

engage people of diverse

faiths and cultures by bring-

ing them together to cel-

ebrate their uniqueness and

diversity and recognizing the

need to create and celebrate

fellowship. Throughout the

academic year, the Institute

continued to provide a forum

for lively panel discussion,

symposia and interesting

lectures designed to promote

sincere interfaith dialogue. Dr. Charles Kimball, Presidential Professor and Director of Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma, joins Marion Lowenthal of the Institute for Interfaith Dialogue.

The importance of the pillar of Study and our dedi-

cation to academic excellence were evident in the

credentials of incoming students and the expansion

of our program offerings. The 2009-2010 academic year brought

incoming freshmen with an average SAT score that was 27 points

above the freshmen of the previous year. Our applications for

admission also increased substantially.

Earlier this year, Molloy received approval to offer its first-

ever doctoral program, a Ph.D. in Nursing. The first cohort

of ten doctoral students entered the program in the fall. “The

Ph.D. program in Nursing provides a new level of education on

the Molloy College campus and in the Division of Nursing,”

said Jeannine Muldoon, Ph.D., Dean, Division of Nursing. “The

focus of the program is to prepare nurse-scholars who will provide

leadership in health policy, nursing education, and nursing

research. These nurse-scholars will influence healthcare delivery

and the preparation of the nursing workforce needed to meet the

ever changing needs of society in the wake of healthcare reform

challenges.”

We expanded our reach to

prospective business students

at local high schools through

programs like our new “business

boot camp,” designed to give

students a taste of where a

business education will take

them. While on school break,

they came to Molloy to share

experiences. “The business boot camp was designed to recruit the best and brightest

business majors to attend our program,” said Ed Weis, Ph.D., Dean, Business Division.

“Our faculty of executives (CEOs, CFOs and Managing Directors) gave students exposure

to ‘a-day-in-the-life’ of fast-track careers in investment banking, hedge fund investing,

public accounting, management consulting and entrepreneurship. The boot camp

emphasized ‘active learning’ by the students, including a trading game simulation and

student presentations on challenging business projects. The students definitely left the boot

camp with a sense of pride in what they had accomplished.”

Additionally, as the 2009-2010 year drew to a close, we approved the new Honors Pro-

gram in Business. We expect that the talented students accepted into this year's program

will further communicate the

many positive attributes of a

Molloy business degree.

We were also approved

to offer a new Sustain-

ability minor beginning in

Spring 2011. This program

will be open to students in

any major and will enhance

prospective career opportu-

nities for them upon gradu-

ation by expanding their

knowledge in this critical

area. “We are thrilled to be

able to offer our new minor

in Sustainability,” said Neal

Lewis, Executive Director,

The Sustainability Institute Edward Thompson, Vice President for Advancement, speaks during launch of the Sustainability minor.

at Molloy College. “This is a great example of how Molloy

proactively searches for new ways to improve its students’

competitive edge through education, and also demonstrates

the College’s commitment to the greater good.”

Commencement 2010 was a wonderful celebration

of the academic accomplishments and dedication of our

students. We watched as 895 members of our Molloy

community graduated from various academic disciplines.

The ceremony was once again held at the Nassau County

Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. This year’s

keynote speaker was Jim McCann, CEO of 1-800-Flow-

ers, who urged the graduates to go out into the world and

“make a difference.”

Page 18: Annual Report of the President - 2009-2010

Deeply entrenched in the fabric of all things Molloy

is our dedication to the tradition of Service. New

this year was a student government initiated St.

Baldrick’s Day event. Participants in the event sought sponsors

to donate money to benefit children with cancer. To symbolize

their support, participants had their heads shaved in the Wilbur

lobby. “When it comes to supporting cancer research, people are

very happy to help. When it is children with cancer, not only do

people reach into their pockets, but they are willing to shave their

heads as well,” said Stephen Ostendorff, Director of Campus Life.

“Molloy raised over $7,000 for the cause and over 50 students,

staff, faculty, administrators and friends shaved their heads. Such

a showing of solidarity for children with cancer is what makes

Molloy so special.”

Molloy students and faculty members had the opportunity to

travel to the Lakota Indian Reservation in Lower Brule, South

Dakota, as part of a service-learning initiative. The students’ expe-

rience was wide-ranging and involved working with the children

and teens of the Lower Brule Boys and Girls Club, meeting tribal

elders, attending a community meeting, listening to a lecture on

Lakota spiritual rite, and learning about current issues and tribal

governance. “Our group learned

that, despite the horrific trag-

edies forced upon these people

by our government, the Lakota

people continue to be an open,

warm and welcoming people,”

said Lois Carey, Ph.D., Chair-

person and Program Director,

Social Work Department. “Our

journey to the Lakota Nation

tions, misconceptions and prejudices that

alike to correct the distortions, misconceptions and prejudices that they had previously

thought of as fact. We are humbled and gratified in being welcomed and befriended by the

Lakota people.”

We continued our service-learning initiatives with our fourth annual Alternative Spring

Break trip to New Orleans. The 2010 trip was our largest group of students ever. “Each

year our students walk away from this experience with a broader world view, a deeper sense

of gratitude for their own lives and a lesson in humility for having worked alongside the

residents of the Lower 9th Ward,” said Madeline Gunn, Ph.D., Director of Experiential

Learning. “This experience is part of the College’s mission and commitment to transforma-

tive education.”

Also this year, a group of nursing students served at a community-based social service

agency providing comprehensive services to New Orleans’ low-income and indigent popula-

tion. “Students spent a week

with the homeless and were

able to get a real glimpse of

their everyday struggles,"

said Dr. Kathleen M. Lam-

aute, Associate Professor in

the Nursing Division, who

traveled with her class and

worked alongside them for

the week. “They came to

know them as people, not

just patients. The experience

helped them to see the lives

of the homeless population,

the humanness of each and

every individual. They will

be better nurses because of

this experience.”

program began in Puerto Rico, featuring Molloy’s Modern

Languages Department working in conjunction with the

Dominican Sisters there. Students utilized their Spanish

language skills to perform community service activities, and

also assisted with an afterschool program for disadvantaged

youth.

Closer to home, the Molloy community continued its

work to aid the homeless through the annual BoxTown

event, which benefits Bethany House. We also continued

participation in the Midnight Run program, making late

night trips into Manhattan to distribute clothing, blankets,

food and toiletries to the homeless. Our freshman class also

continued the long-standing tradition of collecting food

from the local community to help stock the pantry shelves at

the Mary Brennan Inn in Hempstead.

As the College continues to move forward with new

academic programs, new facilities and an increasingly vibrant

student body, we will continue to focus on the ideals that

make us an incredibly strong and cohesive community. The

four pillars of Dominican tradition – community, spirituality,

study and service – remain the cornerstone of all we do.
