but only for the medium term. 2015/16 has seen high profile businesses significantly invest in the local Accounting and Administration labour market with the likes of Fulton Hogan, Farmlands, Synlait, ANZCO Foods and others centralising Corporate and Shared Services in Christchurch.
This, coupled with growing SMEs investing more into financial leadership, is creating a more dynamic market for our industry. We hope to see 2017 continue to build on this momentum.
As part of this report we include our most detailed salary data yet. This data is offered as a guide for businesses in Canterbury and the wider South Island, however, sizing a salary requires more than just a title and an indication of company scale and we offer free tailored salary advice across Public Practice, Administration and Senior Finance, so please get in touch with the relevant Recruitment Manager to discuss further – please see page11.

The Profile Group Annual ReportFirstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to look at our 1st Annual Report. As you will probably have found, most industry focused labour & salary trends of this nature tend to have a more national focus. Our intentions are to provide a more detailed, Industry focused Snapshot, specifically across Canterbury and the wider South Island.
We would like to thank KPMG for contributing to our report and hope you find their insights interesting.
As everyone will know, the Christchurch/ Canterbury economic bubble has had profound effects on the labour market, but what has this specifically meant for the Accounting, Administration, Finance and wider commercial sector?
The events of 2011 created a wave of job losses, not just from smaller businesses, but also from large corporate and high profile businesses who opted to relocate their Head Offices and Corporate / Accounting services to Auckland, Australia and beyond. Longstanding Canterbury employers such as NZ Cricket, Holcim, Perpetual Trust and Postie Plus were just some of the many examples.
Construction and engineering firms have helped ‘plug the gap’ of job losses for Accountants,
equality in both candidate and client partnerships

South Island SnapshotThe reasoning and analysis behind job seekers and volume can often be challenging to offer a full definitive explanation, but factors such as economic growth/contraction, population growth/expansions and general investment from public and commercial sectors tend to be some of the key themes behind such figures and stats.
Canterbury leads the way for obvious reasons and holds a consistent pattern of averages. Marlborough and Otago demonstrate the steadiest growth with census figures suggesting between 4% and 5% growth in population respectively. General local economic performance also goes some way in explaining that also.
Southland remains the area of low growth for both Accounting jobs and job seekers. The potential loss and workforce contraction from one or two key businesses will continue to be a key theme for 2017.

Profile Annual Report 5
Top 5 Growth Industries for Positions and AppointmentsThe top 3 industry discipline split rings true across most strong local and national economies. The point of difference lies in the order. Auckland and Christchurch bare a similar theme whereas other towns and cities demonstrate differing breakdowns with IT, Accounts & Admin and Construction all at similar figures within the Wellington market.
Expect Accounting, Admin and general corporate services positions and appointments to draw closer to Construction in Christchurch as rebuild labour activity slows down and ‘Business as Usual’ continues to return.

Category Breakdown for Canterbury
Discipline BreakdownThe Qualified end of the Accounting labour market traditionally and consistently shows an equal and healthy split across most positions and appointments. Finance Manager and Controller appointments has increased a little from last year.
Public Practice year on year illustrates the same consistent pattern. There is a huge demand for BAS / PCS accountants, and there is no sign of this changing as the demand always outweighs the supply. Most major towns and cities across the NZ, Australia, and UK struggle with similar challenges within this area but Christchurch and the wider South Island remains more challenging than most to attract and retain talent within this area.
Accounts and administration is often more tricky to analyse with the Accounts Officers and Clerks taking over 57% of that end of the market. The explanation behind this lies in 2 areas; Firstly, the smaller more intimate size of the local Christchurch economy and the businesses that trade within it need and require more skilled generalists. Secondly, it’s easier for employers to generically categorise the role, as many of these vacancies and appointments with this title are often more similar to an AP or AR role – this is a great supporting example that the duties define the role, not the title!

Summary PageThe outlook for 2017 is one that will bring exponential change. Christchurch’s CBD is really starting to take shape with significant developments coming on stream. So what is driving this shift in momentum;
Infrastructure spend across the South Island continues to play a major role, not only as a result of recent earthquakes but also to support our growing tourism sector.
The primary sector continues to underpin a significant part of the economy. And, whilst global pricing challenges are still impacting many of our primary exports, there is significant sector activity to identify how we can capture more of the value chain and build operating models based on the end consumer. The emerging Sheep Milk industry is an example of this.
When mapped onto a rapidly changing and evolving business world, these opportunities generate economic activity and the pace at which this is taking place has never been greater.
With this in mind, over the next decade it’s likely we’ll see over 40% of businesses change hands and as such, succession planning needs to be top of mind for many organisations – it will become a critical factor to business success. Over the last few months we’ve seen a significant uplift in activity on prior years when it comes to assisting businesses prepare for and/or work through the transaction process as they prepare for and transition through change. When coupled with disruptive technologies having an increasing influence on traditional business models, businesses need to not only find their future leaders, but open-minded and courageous leaders that have what it takes help them navigate a constantly changing world.
Professional services is not immune to the impacts a changing world brings. The skillsets and service offerings we need to grow, flourish and constantly adapt continues to evolve and develop rapidly. More than ever, organisations are looking internally and externally for critical thinkers and solution finders across all business areas and it is crucial that they are not only adapting but also thinking ahead in terms of the future skillsets required. We are seeing this within our business. For example the biggest growth areas are in the consultancy and advisory space – in both larger organisations and private enterprises. Sector specialism such as the agri-food space, assisting businesses to develop a deeper understanding of the customer value proposition, and ability to manage organisational change are all becoming increasingly sort after skill sets.
