Marine Fouling and Biofilm

The problem - Biofilm

Biofilm is the main culprit of many root problems in the marine industry.

Biofilm is the core ingredient for many organisms to harbor onto, resulting in unwanted growth in mission-critial areas, such as caissons and platform infrastructure, costing the industry millions of dollars per year in maintenance and downtime.

The solution - Prevention

Typically, marine growth is removed using expensive, labour intensive methods.

However, TOG provides a preventative measure. By “taking away” the initial surface attachment layer (biofilm) that microorganisms use to grow into colonies, we take away the “home” for many substances to nest on or reproduce.

The result - Time and savings

An environmentally friendly, maintenance free, cost effective preventative measure for treating marine growth.

Conventional solutions to treat marine growth on oil platforms are costly, labour intensive, harmful to the environment and ineffective. This results in high downtime and costs.

The TOG system is an innovative, environmentally friendly and low maintenance technology which prevents marine growth in critial areas, resulting in lower costs and reduced downtime. Easily retrofitted to any existing structure and works 24/7.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN A CURE.

TOG is an innovative, environmentally friendly technology, which acts as a preventative measure for marine fouling on offshore platforms, including caissons, conductors, jacket legs and many other structures - reducing downtime and increasing efficiency while saving money.

• TOG is a TelferTech System incorporating Anti Bio technology, Patent No. PO6886, uses sound (range 2 – 5 kHz) to treat matter

• TOG is specifically designed for the treatment of Marine Fouling and Water

• Each TOG system consists of a Control Unit, and Activators - Which are retrofitted onto existing structure. Number of systems needed is based on site requirements

• Devices made of ferrite rod, wrapped in heat-shrink

• External protective shield casing in demanding weather conditions

• Typical dimension: L – 200 mm; W – 9.5mm• Mounted on the external side of pipe-works,

emitting SSF to areas to be treated

The TOG System - OverviewCONTROL UNIT

ACTIVATORS

Powered by a low voltage power pack, AC 10 VOLT 1 AMP. Houses a circuit board incorporating a pre-programmed microchip to transmit more than 10 million sets of sonic waves to the activators.

The sound emission generated creates Sweeping Sound Frequencies (SSF) which are transmitted to the area of treatment via the activators.

Page 6: Anti Marine Fouling Technology for Oil & Gas Industries

6

How does it work?

• The technology uses patented ‘sweeping sound frequency’ to effectively reduce particle reproduction, and retard and detach formation of biofilm.

• Sweeping Sound negate the “pull factor” for surface attachment

by neutralizing opposite charges between organisms & substrates;

prevent any “attachment” from growing into threatening colonies

• Sweeping Sound interferes with the reproduction of cells

• Sweeping Sound puts these organisms under stress – they are

not able to feed and/or reproduce; retard their normal damaging

activities

• This treats the root cause – preventing micro fouling, minimizing

“attack” of macro fouling

• Over 10 million sets of alternate frequency transmitting at random

intervals: inhibit immunity of microorganism; it works today, it

works 10 years from now

CASE STUDY 1STEEL PLATE TEST

Offshore Oil Platform, Malaysia

Page 10: Anti Marine Fouling Technology for Oil & Gas Industries

10

Steel Plate Validation - OverviewCASE STUDY 1

This test was designed to highlight the effectiveness of the TOG system as a deterant and preventative measure against marine growth.

For 5 months, two metal test plates were placed in the ocean, attached via a steel cable.

One TOG system was installed, with activators attached to one of the steel plates. The other steel plate (Control Plate) was not treated.

Growth on both plates was monitored for a 5 month period. This test was performed on a live Petronas oil platform.

Live Platform Test - OverviewCASE STUDY 2

TOG field trial unit was mobilized to treat 2 caissons on Platform-B and Platform-T, consisting of submersible sea water lifting pumps (SWLP).

Activators are housed in protective shields, mounted approximately equal distance apart on outside of caisson, on the cellar deck. (Figure A)

Objectives

• To reduce or stop calcareous marine growth on structures (incl. caissons, risers, strainers and pumps)

• To prolong pump shutdown cycles due to marine growth.

Figure A

Live Platform Test - Platform-B resultsCASE STUDY 2

March 2011

June 2011

No evidence of continued growth of barnacles from March 2011 to June 2011 with TOG installed.

Abundance of “loose particles” floating in the water column, consistant with the detachment of “existing growth” and particles in water that are not able to attach to substrates due to the TOG system.

This phenomenon was never seen before in the long history of the platform, as commented by platform engineers.

Page 16: Anti Marine Fouling Technology for Oil & Gas Industries

Live Platform Test - Platform-T resultsCASE STUDY 2

Before TOG After TOG

• Most parts of the Strainer are visible; loose patches of slimy biological growth which fall off easily

• No evidence of calcareous growth after TOG installed• These results never occured prior to TOG installation

Observations

Page 17: Anti Marine Fouling Technology for Oil & Gas Industries

17

Live platforms and results using TOGPlatform – B

• 12 months since last monitoring and pump P-8100 is running without any shutdown• 16 months without shutdown on pump P-8110• All onshore and offshore crews are happy and satisfied with the results• Structural Integrity engineers no longer receive complaints regarding pump problems caused by

marine growth• OIM & Management commented that TOG offers so much to gain just from “opportunity lost in

production alone” – less shutdown, more production.

Platform – T

• 2 Systems were installed at Platform - T: P70A & P70B• Recent observations by the OIM - “when we last pulled out the riser it was cleaner than ever before,

and the minimal barnacle attachment fell off very easily which was never happened before”.• Ordered 2 additional TOG systems following review, for further platform treatment.

Platform – S

• Purchased and completed installation of 2 new TOG systems in January 2012, with no prior trial based on confidence and performance from other platforms

How does it work?

The TOG system uses patented Sweeping Sound Frequencies (“SSF”) that

resonates over any hard surfaces or liquids to effectively reduce particle

reproduction, prevent formation of biofilm and repel marine growth, without

using any chemicals. The alternating pattern of the frequencies further inhibits

microbial growth.

The TOG Control Unit distributes the Sweeping Sound Frequencies to the

Activators, which are attached to desired treatment areas (such as pipe work,

pumps, boat landings, hulls, sea chests etc). The Activators then emit the

frequency, which penetrates conductive matter and repels marine growth and

biofilm.

This sonic repellent serves as an effective and much more efficient treatment

compared to standard chemical and manual treatment methods.

How do I operate the system, and how do I know the system is working?

There is no input or maintenance required to operate TOG. Once installed, it runs

automatically from a local power outlet. Only periodic checks are required to

ensure the system is operating correctly, by checking the indicator lights on the

Control Unit, and using our TOG diagnostic tool to test the system.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHow many systems are required for my site?

Depending on the application, with oil rigs as an example, each Control Unit with

5 activators is sufficient to treat one caisson or jacket leg. Site condition, pipe size

and flow rates are key determining factors. Refer to the TOG Technical Manual for

specifications.

Does the system use much power?

No – The system uses minimal power, and can be run on solar power if required.

Installation

TOG can be retrofitted to any required treatment areas. No existing infrastructure is

modified, and at no time does the system make contact with the water itself. A site

scoping before installation is always deemed essential, to determine the most

suitable locations to install the system. The TOG Technical Manual provided offers

easy guidance to safe and proper installation procedures.
