ANTIQUES NEWS, P.O.BOX 500 MOUNT JOY, 17552 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 44, NO. 19 FRIDAY MAY 10, 2013 By Karl Pass Longtime auctioneer and cattle farmer Wayne Shultz held his 19th biennial sale of country Americana April 27th in the small town of Martinsburg in rural Blair County, Pennsylvania. In years past he used the Duncansville Community Center, also located in Blair County. This was the second sale Shultz has held in the Memorial Park Sports Complex Building. The standing-room-only crowd held its energy throughout, signaling an ever-evolving and slightly stronger market. “This was one of the nicest crowds I’ve worked with. I had a lot of positive comments and quite a few new faces. They really appre- ciated the offerings,” said Shultz following the sale. Shultz gathers his own material for his sales throughout the central Pennsylvania region, buying local country primitives such as hooked rugs, quilts, coverlets, baskets, wooden bowls, toys, ironware, pot- tery, guns, jewelry and painted fur- niture. He buys a lot privately and does not miss any noteworthy auc- tion or antique show. After two years of accu- mulating, he schedules a sale and serves as the auctioneer. His auction rules are basic and a critical part of his formula: there are no consignments, reserves, buyer’s premiums, or absentee, telephone or online bid- ding. It is what most people want in a sale, and both dealers and col- lectors came in droves, filling the building to capacity. Highlights in the painted coun- try furniture category included bucket benches, dry sinks, corner cupboards, single-drawer stands, and blanket chests. An unusual and dated 1873 Soap Hollow sewing stand with painted floral decora- tion, bracket feet, a drawer and spool holders sold for $5,750. Another sewing stand with one drawer and gilded floral stenciled decoration from Somerset County, Pa., also sold for $5,750. The buyer was a local private collector. Both stands were found in Somerset County. The dated example was certainly from the Soap Hollow school of cabinetmakers. Also in the sale was a Soap Hollow mid- size blanket chest decorated with initials “JS” and a large sten- ciled basket in the center hold- ing two watermelons. It sold for $2,000. Soap Hollow furniture was pro- duced from roughly 1830 to 1890 in Somerset County, Pa. The name was reportedly coined from the brown soft soap produced through- out the region, which lies in a hol- low. This western Pennsylvania enclave of Mennonite cabinetmak- ers worked predominately north of Davidsville in Conemaugh Township. Collectors and dealers alike highly value Soap Hollow material as folk art in today’s mar- ketplace. The primary forms were the lift-top blanket chest and the chest of drawers, although sewing boxes/stands, cradles, rope beds, Dutch cupboards, hanging cup- boards and a tall-case clock were also produced by these unique regional craftsmen. Eight cabinetmakers are associ- ated with the Soap Hollow School of cottage craftsmen, most promi- nently John Sala, Christian Blauch, Peter Thomas and Jeremiah Stahl. All produced furniture of similar design, con- struction and decoration. The majority was paint-decorated and incorporated cut- paper stencil decora- tion. Dark red or maroon with black moldings and feet was a popular color com- bination. Some later pieces were grain-dec- orated and had floral decals as embellish- ment. The stencil dec- oration was often done in gilt and included floral and geometric design work. More unusual stencil images are spread- wing eagles, pairs of facing horses, compotes, stars, hearts and lyres. Many Soap Hollow chests possess the owner’s initials on the front left and the date on the right. Alternately, this information was often placed on the sides of chest of drawers. This unique body of work expresses a material cul- ture rooted in both Germanic and Neoclassical traditions. Shultz is known for assembling fine Pennsylvania quilts at his sales. This one was no exception. There were 28 pieced and appliquéd quilts dating from 1850 to 1945. Most were in original unlaundered condi- tion. A fine circa 1900 Bedford County, Pa., appliquéd quilt with twenty birds and four large potted floral plants was the highest priced one, selling for $3,400. It was made by Lizzie Vickroy McClellan. Most of the quilts sold in the $1,000 to $3,000 range. “The categories I felt did well were quilts, stoneware and the gold and silver coins. The toys brought good but average prices. There were some bargains to be had in some of the art pottery, cut glass and music boxes,” stated Shultz. About two dozen pieces of stoneware were in the sale. Much of it was local to the central Pennsylvania region. A four-gallon water cooler decorated with three cobalt flowers made by Thomas & Bro. of Huntingdon brought $3,750, while a miniature unsigned jug approximately 2 1/2” high with A Soap Hollow Showcase Virginia Decorative Arts Seminar To Focus On Punched-Tin Paneled Furniture (Continued on page 7) PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID ENGLE PUBLISHING CO. It’s May in Ohio, andsigns of spring are every-where: warm sunshine, softearth and good antiques atGarth’s Auctioneers &Appraisers, located at 2690S t r a t f o r dRoad in

Delaware, Ohio. May hasmarked an Americana auc-tion for more years than mostpeople on staff can remem-ber, but for the past 7 years, the May Americana auctionshave been highlighted by aspecial session focused onmaterial from the Ohio RiverValley.

“It was never a big leapfor us,” comments companyCEO Jeff Jeffers. “Garth’scompany history is as muchtied to the antiques of Ohio asanything. We sell great Ohiothings all year, but the pointof this session is to bring acurated selection of goodthings that speak to theartistry and history of theregion. For us, it is about pro-moting scholarship andappreciation. One of ourcompetitors once commentedthat Garth’s has done morefor the antiques and arts ofthis region than any otherfirm - I am humbled by thecomment, not sure if Iagree...but, appreciative andproud to make an impact.”

The two-day auctionkicks off on Friday, May 17,at 2 p.m. and continues onSaturday, May 18, at 10 a.m.Consignments include itemsfrom the Texas collection fea-tured in Garth’s JanuaryAmericana barn burner; the50-year collection of Marilynand the late Peter Wendler ofMaumee, Ohio; selectionsfrom the collection ofKristine Sorgenfrei-DeBoltas well as John and LoisBrown; and choice itemsfrom the 30-year collectionof Tom King, retired vicepresident of Garth’s and

working folk artist. “When Tom called to say

it was time,” recountedJeffers, “I was surprised - but,I knew it would be alot of fun emptyingthe house. Like a

trip down

memory lane.” King’s collection includes

several important contribu-tions to the Americana andOhio Valley sessions includ-ing four scarce miniaturebandboxes in wonderfullygraphic wallpaper decora-tion. Featured on the cover ofthe catalog, the boxes range

in size from 2” to 3” high andfrom $300 to $800 each invalue, and they make a strik-ing diminutive stack.

Folk art enthusiasts willhave no shortage of optionsduring this auction, includingmore lots from Tom King’scollection: two bookplatesattributed to the same(unknown) Ohio hand (onewith Hattie Brunner and

Mary Thornton provenance),with colorful, well-propor-tioned birds on branches andestimated at $250 to $500each; a couple of portraits by

Pennsylvania artist JacobEichholtz (1776 - 1842),estimated at $1,500 to

$3,000 each; and a portrait ofa woman attributed to JasperMiles (Connecticut/Ohio,1782-1849), who moved tothe Firelands in 1817, then onto Milan and Berlin Heights

(est. $2,000 -$3,000). A paintingof cattle was well-executed byWilliam Henry

Howe (NewYork/Connecticut) and isexpected to fetch $2,000 to$3,000.

One of the most impor-tant lots of the sale is certainto be a 19th-century stonecarved dog, attributed to atombstone carver by thename of Farmer. Purchasedby well-known collectorMike Clum in the 1990s, thefolksy pup is estimated to sell

for $35,000 to$45,000. Other toplots include a greatstenciled Indianacupboard insplashy hues oforange, red andgreen. Dated 1883and initialed “SY”and “JY,” the twopiece stepback fea-tures three drawersand a base restingon shaped feet (est.$4,000 - $8,000). Abow front cornercupboard is sharp, with dentil moldedcornice, shaped andinlaid skirt and peri-od brasses (est.

$3,500 - $7,000), and an openwork fruit Sandwich glassfruit basket is sweet at only8.5” tall (est. $2,000 -$4,000). An impressive bottlewhimsy is also sure to capti-vate bidders: with two levels, including a white clapboardfarmhouse and a schoolhousebelow, wonderful folksy dec-oration and a terrific prove-nance (made by CharlesHoke and ex Robert andMary Merritt, The Merritt’sMuseum of Childhood,Douglassville, Pa.), it is esti-mated to sell between $4,000and $6,000.

It would not be a Garth’sAmericana auction withoutchoice gameboards, buckets,a variety of baskets and qual-ity textiles (including severalearly and fine quilts and sam-plers). Other furniture choic-es offered over the two-dayauction include two sets ofnicely decorated chairs, aswell as a diverse selection ofChippendale, Queen Anneand Sheraton chests, standsand tables.

Rock Island AuctionCompany (RIAC), located inRock Island, Ill., set thefirearms market ablaze onceagain at their inaugural 2013Premiere Firearms auction, held April 19 to 21.

“In the auction business,we know each sale is different.Every auction has differentchallenges and uncertainties, and this sale was no different inthat respect,” said PatrickHogan, president and CEO ofRock Island AuctionCompany.

What Hogan was referringto were the large number ofnamed collections, whichincluded the Charles LindleyCollection of German MilitaryArms, the Gary CoteCollection of Winchester1894s, the AnthonyUrbanowski Collection ofSmith & Wessons, and the auc-

tion’s most daunting yet mostanticipated collection, theWilliam Ashby Collection ofArms and Armor. Before thesale, puns had been made inreference to the many knightsin shining armor, as the salet o u t e dnearly 30full suitsof com-

posite and Victorianarmor. Well, ‘shine’ they did, asthe collection grossed justunder its high estimate, totaling$1,033,000 in sales.

Over the course of the threeday auction, hundreds of bid-ders from nearly every cornerof the globe converged ontoRock Island Auctions’ preview

floor to inspect, bid, and withany luck, take a few of theamazing pieces home withthem. In addition to those whomade the trip to bid live, nearly15,000 sealed, telephone andInternet bids were placed with

RIAC over the course of thethree days.

“The response from thecollecting community andthose savvy investment buyerswas spectacular. This auctionset a record for us, not only asthe most absentee bids placedin a Premiere auction, (but alsothe fact that) we had 930 suc-

cessful bidders,” said Hogan. The highest grossing item

of the week was Lot number3069, which was the scarce anddesirable documented U.S.Colt Walker Model 1847revolver. This lot commandednot only the highest price of theweekend, at $138,000, but alsoone of the most intense biddingwars, as bidder cards seemed toshoot up almost simultaneous-ly around the room. “It was aclassic war of attrition, as bid-ders bowed out at $100,000,and it was between two deter-mined phone bidders” saidKevin Hogan, Patrick’s sonand fellow auctioneer.

Other Colt firearms alsocommanded large sums - Lot1091, the finest pair of U.S.Martially Inspected Colt 2ndModel Dragoon Revolvers, brought $115,000; Lot 1412,the rare Bertrand Couch facto-

ry engraved and gold inlaidrevolver, brought $109,250;and a Patterson No. 3 BeltModel Pistol, which was esti-mated from $30,000-$40,000,realized $54,000.

C o l tf irearmswere justthe begin-ning,a s

demand. A beautiful collectionof Winchester Model 1887

Shotguns experienced quite abit of interest. Lot 1025, aSpecial Order 20-inchWinchester Model 1887 shot-gun in phenomenal condition, estimated $25,000-$37,500,

brought $54,625, while Lot1026, one of only five factoryengraved Winchester Model
