PROPOSAL “Design & The Elastic Mind” is an extraordinary exhibition. As the name suggest, the exhibition showcases a collections of unique pieces from art & design practitioners . PROPOSAL

“Design & The Elastic Mind” is an extraordinary exhibition. As the name suggest, the exhibition showcases a collections of unique pieces from art & design practitioners . Their backgrounds are varied, from artists, designers, engineers to even chemists worldwide. There are almost no limitation, no boundary, the exhibition itself is a representation of endless possibilities.

The brief asked student

to produce a “Design-Led” screensaver for the MOMA show “Design & the elastic Mind”. As the brief mentioned, the screensaver has to be experimental, generative, data ware, innovative and future racing, implemented the exhibition’s spirit.

I found the brief quite challenging. Screensaver appears the moment the computer goes into “relax-mode”. Creating a screensaver which could catch

the user’s attention even when the computer is temporally “sleeping” is no easy task. I would try to create something rather simple but solid and interesting, something which would fit the motto “Think out of the box”

INTRO

The first thing came to my mind is creating a piece of generative typography. Artists such as Reza Ali, James Thompson, Ben McChesney have done some phenomenal pieces which capture the audience’s eyes with their beautiful form and mesmerising animation. It would be “data-ware”, “mathematical” and “generative” which fits the brief’s criteria perfectly.

However, I also want it to be playful and catchy, something

the audience can be a little useful for the user, rather than just a screen decoration. I came up with the concept of a clock on any possible surfaces. It would make a fun piece with a touch of humour

I would also want to make a screensaver which would inspire the viewers to think about the meaning behind it. “This is not a Pipe” is one of my most favourite artwork from the “Treachery of Image” by René Magritte. I could

make a screensaver based on the Magritte’s concept of “representation” which would lead the audience to think about the question what’s real and what’s not.

OUTCOMES

Generative Typography is relative new form of generative art. Artists use programming and coding to producing intricate and bespoke designs. The beautiful results of his coding experiments vary depending on the method. For example, Reza Ali build his masterpiece based upon on typography, color, simulations (particles, springs, and fluid), audio-input and simple rule based

systems. I t’s a wonderful visual treat and it will certainly make a great screensaver. I decided to experiment with generative typography. Using Processing library such as Geomerative and traer physic, I created a few versions of generative text screensaver with the word “MOMA” , the company which organise this exhibition. The results are quite interesting and visually powerful .

GENERATIVE TYPOGRAPHY

DESIGN- LED SCREENSAVER FOR ‘DESIGN & THE ELASTIC MIND’

<<Anyclock is an experimental screensaver which aims to create something useful and fun. On the first look, it functions just like any other clock. The background, however, change over time. It could be anything , from the egg’s yolk to the tennis ball. The background of the clock is

a surprise element with a twist of humour. T The clock background is quite unusual and unexpected. It could make a good laugh or simply an entertaining visual treat.

ANYCLOCK

I used the “This is not a Pipe” by René Magritte as a basic concept for this screensaver. The screensaver inspires the audience to think about their way of seeing and their perception of images. René Magritte said :“The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is

it not? So if I had written on my picture “This is a pipe,” I’d have been lying”

Perhaps, we are seeing lies and not the real images? Using simple but solid design elements, the screensaver is a good mental exercise, as well as a reminder of the way we see things.
