Across the landscape of the Bundaberg Region we value and protect the many memorial sites which stand as reminders of the human toll of war .

They are reminders of those whose courage and dedication to service allows us the lifestyle we enjoy today in this great country of Australia .

Our many memorials, spread from the hinterland regions of Childers, Booyal, South Kolan and Gin Gin to seaside and riverside locations like Bargara, Woodgate and Buxton share the message and the names of those who answered the call to arms .

The importance of these memorial sites gains added status with each passing year .

Our community, through its advocacy and the representations of organisations like the RSL, engages with Council in ensuring the

maintenance and enhancement of these permanent sites of tribute .

ANZAC Day is especially relevant and ensures that these memorials play a central role in our ceremonies of remembrance and respect for those who served and those who fell .

Today we assemble as a grateful community at these sacred locations and pay tribute to the fallen and extend our appreciation to those who have served and who continue to serve in defence of our nation .

To engage with this annual observance of ANZAC Day remains incumbent on us all .

Lest We Forget .

O God, our help in ages past,Our hope for years to come,Our shelter from the stormy blast,And our eternal home .Under the shadow of thy throne,Thy saints have dwelt secure;Sufficient is thine arm alone,And our defence is sure .Before the hills in order stood,Or earth received her frame,From everlasting thou art God,To endless years the same .A thousand ages in thy sightAre like an evening gone;Short as the watch that ends the nightBefore the rising sun .Time, like an ever-rolling stream,Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dreamDies at the opening day .O God, our help in ages past,Our hope for years to come,Be thou our guide while troubles last,And our eternal home!

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide .When other helpers fail and comforts flee,Help of the helpless, O abide with me .Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;Change and decay in all around I see;O Thou who changest not, abide with me .I need Thy presence every passing hour, What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?Through sunshine and cloud, Oh abide with me . Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies .Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me .

Abide with me

An incredible amount of unexploded bombs and other devices are regularly uncovered from the now tranquil and productive agricultural fields of Flanders .

At the Lex Rowland Gallery at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation residents can view the exhibition “Recovering the Past”, an inspired compilation of images produced by London based artist Ian Alderman.

Alderman accompanied bomb disposal experts as they undertook their dangerous work, at times with tragic consequences . The experience allowed Alderman to capture modern images that link the present to the Great War .

Cleverly Alderman has been able to utilise these modern colour photographs with monochrome images of soldiers from the conflict era and merge them into thought provoking interpretations that span the decades .

Recovering the PastThe results are powerful and Alderman’s dedication to detail is impeccable . The historic images of Australian battlefield soldiers engaging with the bomb disposal crews make for a unique artistic experience .

The stories accompanying the images are tragic, sorrowful and provide a glimpse of what must have been hell on earth .

The display is an appropriate postscript to the observances so recently undertaken for the centenary of the Armistice .
