Platinum Partners:
Welcome to Adelaide!Technology, Technique and Training
On behalf of the organising committee it is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery (ANZSVS) Annual Scientific Conference for 2019. The conference is to be held in Adelaide from 16th to 19th of August 2019. The exciting North Terrace/Torrens precinct of Adelaide provides the beautiful backdrop for the conference venue at the redeveloped Adelaide Convention Centre. The conference will also be held in conjunction with the Australia and New Zealand Society of Vascular Nursing (ANZSVN).
The focus of the conference is the future of vascular surgery, to reflect both the changing face of the disease we treat and how to meet those challenges from both surgeon and industry viewpoints. At a time of increased pressure on resources, finances and scrutiny of outcomes, we aim to dissect and discuss issues that are central to all vascular surgeons’ practices. Integral to this is the relationship between training, techniques, and technological developments. Approaching this from the point of view of the everyday vascular surgeon, and the questions that we have to try and do the best for the challenging patients that we see on a frequent basis, we have structured the program to try and answer some of those questions that we have in an evidence-based fashion. We hope to inspire people to engage with some of the challenges that we face as a profession, and provide an exciting and innovative forum to encourage interaction.
The scientific program will be filled with engaging international and local speakers to provide their insights into vascular surgery in 2019. Additionally, we hope to have industry engineers available to discuss with us the future and challenges of device development. We have specifically identified speakers for their skills in innovation and their clinical expertise, as well as their ability to engage with the society members on a personal level, and provide a new voice that has not necessarily been heard in Australia or New Zealand in recent times.
The Limb Salvage Symposium provides an excellent opportunity for us to engage in a multidisciplinary fashion to see what developments help us strive towards improved amputation prevention, and improved outcomes for our patients. We will focus on the technologies and techniques that all of us can aim to implement into our practice, as well as horizon scanning for the innovations that will drive us forward.
We also have a great social occasion with the society conference dinner at the Adelaide Oval and a variety of events associated with the conference and our industry sponsors. We are grateful for the ongoing support of our industry sponsors for their support of the society and the conference.
We look forward to, and actively invite your involvement in ANZSVS 2019 – Technology, Technique and Training.
With kind regards,

Conference VisitorsAssociate Professor Jean Bismuth (Houston, USA)
Associate Professor Bismuth received his medical degree from Copenhagen University in Copenhagen, Denmark and completed his surgical residency at The
Brooklyn Hospital Center.
Subsequently, he completed his Vascular Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr Bismuth is the recipient of a Society for Vascular Surgery grant and is a national PI for two major clinical trials in the US. He is also the recipient of the Dyer Fellowship Award to support his research in vascular surgery robotics, and imaging and computational fluid dynamics.
Dr Bismuth comes to us to share his knowledge and expertise in the areas of complex/junctional aortic aneurysm management, iliac and infrainguinal occlusive disease. He is heavily involved in the training of US Vascular and Endovascular surgeons and will provide insight into their programs and ideas. He has collaborated with industry to bring ideas to life and will guide us on how we can all collaborate further with industry to improve outcomes for patients.
Dr Bismuth is a very exciting addition to the ANZSVS 2019 program with much to offer the society.
Mr Paul Blair (Belfast, Ireland)
Appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Director of Trauma Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast in 1995 he stepped down as Trauma Director in 2012 to become
Clinical Director of the regional vascular unit in Belfast following the reconfiguration of vascular services in Northern Ireland. The unit serves a population of 1.8 million and is the highest volume centre in the UK for AAA, Carotid and lower limb revascularisation procedures.
He currently undertakes all index vascular cases but has a special interest in carotid body tumours and lower limb revascularisation.
In 2014/15 he was elected President of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and is currently chair of the Professional Standards Committee of VSGBI.
He has been actively involved in the reconfiguration of vascular services throughout the UK and Ireland and has chaired a number of professional and service reviews on behalf of VSGBI and the Royal College of Surgeons London.
Reconfiguration of vascular services can be problematic for a variety of reasons and significant lessons have been learned by all concerned in this process of moving towards a smaller number of high-volume arterial centres.
Dr Sukgu Han (California, USA)

VASCULAR SURGERY 2019:TECHNOLOGY, TECHNIQUE AND TRAINING
Powerpoint GuidelinesLayout and Text LayoutWhen text and titles are viewed on-screen from a distance, a large font size is recommended. For titles, please use 20pt+ and for text use 16pt minimum. If only a few key points of text are to be used per slide, feel free to increase font sizes.
Where possible, keep text content to a minimum. In the conference room, attendees may be sitting quite far from the screen(s). Make sure table and chart text is of a large size.
It is easier for the viewer to read your slides if only one or two font types are used throughout your presentation. Please use System Standard Fonts i.e. Calibri and Times New Roman. If you use non-standard fonts, we recommend you embed these fonts in PowerPoint. Further information can be found on Microsoft’s support site.
Layout and ColoursIf elements on your slides are different, make sure that they appear distinct from one another – graphic elements and text should contrast well with backgrounds. This can be achieved through use of colour (use this colour contrast checker) and by differentiating the shapes and sizes of elements.
PicturesPowerPoint handles scaled images very well, but it is important to optimise your presentation by scanning your images as close to the final size as possible. The file size of an image for presentation would typically be less than 1MB. Please use the “Compress Pictures” command under the PowerPoint File menu. Images should be sized for ‘on screen’ presentation (150 dpi), not for ‘print’ (220 dpi).
Animation and build sequencesIt can be tempting to use some of the many animation effects built into PowerPoint. These can tend to slow the flow of the presentation and can dramatically affect presentation timing. This is critical if you are only allocated 8-10 minutes. We advise to minimise the use of transitions, or use quick transitions like “Fade” or “Fade through Black”.
MoviesIf you are including video clips in your presentation, please ensure all files are embedded. Please attempt to keep file sizes to a minimum. Once all movies are embedded, use the “Compress Media” command in the File menu to optimise these videos for smooth playback onsite.
When you include a movie decide whether you want the movie to play automatically or “In Click Sequence.” Please note there is no mouse at the lectern.
Be sure to rehearse the presentation to make sure you know what the movie’s behaviour will be. Please indicate when submitting presentations if you intend to use mixed media (e.g. movies with sound).
Presentation TemplatesPresentation templates will be made available via the conference website, or by contacting Iconic Live’s speaker support co-ordinator at [email protected].

Audio Visual Instructions to PresentersIconic Live is managing the Audio Visual and Speaker Support services for the ANZSVS Conference 2019 in Adelaide.
To ensure that every speaker is presented in the most professional way, the following guidelines should apply:
• Advance submissions of completed presentations will be accepted via an online upload facility available at asc.anzsvs.org.au from Monday 15 July 2019 until Monday 12 August 2019. Presentations that are not complete by that date must be submitted on site at the speakers’ support centre.
• It is essential that all speakers check-in at the speakers’ support centre (whether or not you have uploaded a file in advance) no less than two sessions prior to your presentation, or the previous day if presenting in a morning session. This is to check that any embedded media such as video or audio files are working correctly on the conference systems, and ensure that the correct version of your presentation is transferred to the session room in good time.
• Speaker Support operators will assist you in checking through your completed presentation and helping with any technical queries, such as how to set media files for playback or special transitions. This should be a quick process taking no more than 10 minutes.
• Please note that wholesale changes or helping to build presentations from scratch is not the role of the speakers’ support centre. If you think you need help with a presentation that is going to be time consuming you should request this of the speakers’ support receptionist so that it can be scheduled for an off-peak time, such as during the afternoon sessions.
• Please submit your presentation in good time. ‘Last minute’ submissions hamper the speakers’ support operation, impact negatively on your fellow presenters and significantly increase the risk of there being a problem with your presentation.
• A PowerPoint template will be made available for download from the Vascular 2019 conference website. The template will reflect the theme of the conference and provide examples of suggested text sizes and fonts.
• The default aspect ratio for slides is 16:9 (wide screen) rather than 4:3. This is to reflect the fact that the standard template in the latest version of PowerPoint (Office 2019) is 16:9 (wide screen) – which is in line with the format of most screens today (TVs, iPads, tablets, etc.). However, please note that the older 4:3 (non-wide screen) format will be supported and your presentation will not be compromised in size or resolution if you choose to stay with this format.
• Only presentations in PowerPoint are supported by default. Any variation to this format must be advised by Friday 2 August 2019 to [email protected]
• Presentations created on PC or Mac versions of PowerPoint are accepted – however please note that playback on site will be via a Windows PC.
• Please ensure that any media files are embedded when uploading your presentation.
