“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”Matthew 6:12 (NIV)And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

This week we are looking at God’s mercy and how forgiveness is often the way we both experience and share His mercy.

Share Your StoryWhat’s a time when someone showed you mercy instead of punishment for a mistake?

Think of a time when someone did something wrong to you. What would justice have looked like? What would mercy have looked like?

Find Your Story in God’s StoryWhere is God using you to display mercy toward someone else? What does the practice of forgiveness do for others?

Sometimes mercy is associated with weakness. But mercy cannot be weaker than justice because it actually requires more strength than justice does. Real mercy starts with understanding what righteousness would demand from a situation. And then, with that knowledge, you practice mercy and forgiveness by assuming the cost of the situation for yourself. Maybe that means taking someone else’s debt to restore him to financial rightness. Or maybe it means doing the extra work to make up for someone’s mistake. But in every case, we need God’s strength and support to practice mercy and forgiveness.

What is the way Jesus describes how the world treats others?

Who does Jesus instruct us to treat well, despite their not deserving it?

What are some ways Jesus instructs us to practice mercy?

In a spiritual sense, what have our mistakes, failures and sins earned us in our

standing with God? What is the mercy we’re hoping for instead?

How has God provided mercy for us?

The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. How can we live differently knowing

that we’ve been pardoned from eternal death? How could your everyday interactions look different?READ MATTHEW 18:21-35

Read the passages together, and then discuss the following questions.

How did the king respond to the servant’s plea for extra time to pay off his debt?

How did that same servant act toward someone who owed him a small debt?

Who witnesses the hypocrisy of the servant whose large debt was erased by the king? Why do you think they were so outraged?

Why should we be merciful to other people?

What are some ways God has been merciful to you?

Who are some people it’s hard for you to practice mercy and forgiveness toward?

Who are some people who have forgiven your debts, whether financial, relational, emotional or another type? How did that change your life?

How can your group or community help you develop your practice of forgiveness?

Give each person an opportunity to share prayer requests.
