A lot has transpired since that time and the year has flown by. Rhonda and I have been so blessed by the loving people of CBC and we have learned much about the wonderful fellowship we now call home. Even though we’ve been able to be a part of so many Lord’s Days and different events this past year, at times I feel as if we’re just getting started. There are so many exciting things that we can see for the future and that we hear from you to impact our community with the Gospel. I know that the Lord has some great things in store for us as a church body. Here are a couple of things that are taking place and/or that are in the works to help us as a church family be all that God wants us to be. Sunday Morning Bible Study I shared in worship last week a little bit about the vision to multiply our Sunday morning Bible study ministry. In visiting many of our classes, I have been greatly impressed especially in two areas: (1) First, with the concern that members have for one another, and (2) The quality of the Bible teaching that is taking place. We have some great classes that are “making disciples” which is what our mission is all about. Because people involved in a small group are more likely to become maturing disciples of Jesus who will impact their world, we want to stress the importance of every member being involved in a small group. In light of that, I put forth a very attainable goal of having in attendance 50% of our total Sunday morning enrollment which comes out to about 229 people each week as an average attendance. To achieve this first goal, I’m proposing that we need to start about 6-7 new classes. Why are new classes essential to growth? Here are three reasons: (1) One, a class that consistently averages about 80% of their space cannot grow. (2) Second, new classes tend to incorporate new people more easily than long-established classes. This is not a criticism towards established classes; however, in long-established classes there are long-standing close relationships which make it more difficult for new people to be assimilated. (3) Third, there are gaps or areas of need that we may need to address. We have to ask the questions, “What needs are present in our fellowship that we are not meeting?” “What people groups are we not reaching that a small group could focus on?” Of course, teachers and leaders to lead new classes must come from existing classes. That is why we are encouraging our existing classes to send out missionaries to lead new classes which many of our classes are already doing. I’m excited to report that as of now, we have at least four (4) potential new classes to begin in the Fall (Sept.). Without giving specific details because we’re still working those out, I can say that we’re looking at offering a Sunday morning class for those who would like to dig deeper, a “topical” class for parents of young children, a class for men, and a Spanish-speaking class. What’s important to keep in mind if you currently attend a Sunday morning Bible study is that you will still be able to choose which class you attend. Think of these new classes as “options” to help us increase the number of people attending a Bible study from within our own fellowship and also for those on the outside. Originally, Sunday School began as an evangelistic organization to reach people outside the church. Could the Lord use your class to reach people for Christ? Most definitely! I hope you will be excited about what God wants to do to “make disciples” at CBC through our Sunday morning Bible study ministry. Pastor Joe "I thank my God every time I remember you." “I thank my God every time I

remember you” Philippians 1:3

From Pastor Joe August 2016 Can you believe that it has almost been one year since I came to preach at CBC in view of a call! A lot

has transpired since that time and the year has flown by. Rhonda and I have been so blessed by the

loving people of CBC and we have learned much about the wonderful fellowship we now call home.

Even though we’ve been able to be a part of so many Lord’s Days and different events this past year,

at times I feel as if we’re just getting started. There are so many exciting things that we can see for the

future and that we hear from you to impact our community with the Gospel. I know that the Lord has

some great things in store for us as a church body. Here are a couple of things that are taking place

and/or that are in the works to help us as a church family be all that God wants us to be.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

I shared in worship last week a little bit about the vision to multiply our Sunday morning Bible study

ministry. In visiting many of our classes, I have been greatly impressed especially in two areas: (1)

First, with the concern that members have for one another, and (2) The quality of the Bible teaching

that is taking place. We have some great classes that are “making disciples” which is what our mission

is all about. Because people involved in a small group are more likely to become maturing disciples of

Jesus who will impact their world, we want to stress the importance of every member being involved

in a small group. In light of that, I put forth a very attainable goal of having in attendance 50% of our

total Sunday morning enrollment which comes out to about 229 people each week as an average

attendance. To achieve this first goal, I’m proposing that we need to start about 6-7 new classes.

Why are new classes essential to growth? Here are three reasons: (1) One, a class that consistently

averages about 80% of their space cannot grow. (2) Second, new classes tend to incorporate new

people more easily than long-established classes. This is not a criticism towards established classes;

however, in long-established classes there are long-standing close relationships which make it more

difficult for new people to be assimilated. (3) Third, there are gaps or areas of need that we may need

to address. We have to ask the questions, “What needs are present in our fellowship that we are not

meeting?” “What people groups are we not reaching that a small group could focus on?”

Of course, teachers and leaders to lead new classes must come from existing classes. That is why we

are encouraging our existing classes to send out missionaries to lead new classes which many of our

classes are already doing. I’m excited to report that as of now, we have at least four (4) potential new

classes to begin in the Fall (Sept.). Without giving specific details because we’re still working those out,

I can say that we’re looking at offering a Sunday morning class for those who would like to dig deeper,

a “topical” class for parents of young children, a class for men, and a Spanish-speaking class.

What’s important to keep in mind if you currently attend a Sunday morning Bible study is that you

will still be able to choose which class you attend. Think of these new classes as “options” to help us

increase the number of people attending a Bible study from within our own fellowship and also for

those on the outside. Originally, Sunday School began as an evangelistic organization to reach people

outside the church. Could the Lord use your class to reach people for Christ? Most definitely! I hope

you will be excited about what God wants to do to “make disciples” at CBC through our Sunday

morning Bible study ministry.

“Director of Family Ministries” Position Some time back Kristi approached me about the possibility of having a ministry position that would

combine her responsibilities along with co-directing responsibilities in our Learning Center. Kristi has

some opportunities to work more hours at her current job and also has a heart to see our children’s

ministry expand even further. Kristi and I have since discussed this idea, prayed about it, and shared the

vision with our Advisory Council. I have drafted a ministry description for this position and have been

actively praying and searching for the right person for this position. Please join us in praying that God

would send us the right person who like Kristi has a heart for children and families and who can fill this

unique position. Following is a very brief description of this position. You are more than welcome to

request a fuller description from the church office. We are asking for resumes to be submitted to the

church office either by mail or electronically at [email protected] by August 31, 2016.

Ministry Position Description Carrollwood Baptist Church is taking applications for the full-time position of “Director of Family

Ministries.” The Director of Family Ministries will be responsible for co-directing CBC’s Learning Center

and directing the church’s overall Children’s Ministry program. The person filling this position will split

time between the Learning Center and the church’s Children’s Ministry.

Men’s Small Group Ministry Update

The results of our men’s survey are in – the men at CBC want to make their life count for Christ! We

had a great response from our men on starting some small groups that will help our men grow in the

Lord and also to reach other men for Christ. We will have our next meeting on August 7 to discuss

the specifics of (1) Locations and leaders for each location that we will offer, (2) Specific materials to

use (I will have some samples to look at), and (3) Time frames for the Fall semester. This meeting is

especially targeted to our men who expressed an interest in facilitating or hosting a small group, but

all interested men are invited to join in the discussion.

As With Gladness Men of Old

William C. Dix, 1837-1898 Matthew 2:1-2

The period in the church year that begins with January 6 and extends to Ash Wednesday is known as Epiphany. Epiphany marks the time that the Christ Child was revealed to the wise men in His first manifestation to the Gentiles as the Light of the whole world. It is generally believed by Bible scholars that these wise men from the East arrived approximately 2 years after the birth of Christ. The earnestness of their search, their worship and gifts, and their desire to return home to share their spiritual experience with others have much to teach us. In many churches, Epiphany is ushered in with a special week of prayer, a renewed commitment to evangelism, and a worldwide concern for missions.

Epiphany should be a strong reminder to all Christians that God wants not only our worship but also our willingness to share His message with others both at home and abroad. The gospel of good news must be heard beyond the walls of our church buildings. May we be challenged to share God’s love both by word and deed with those He brings into our lives each day.

As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold As with joy they hailed its light leading onward beaming bright

So most gracious Lord may we evermore be led to Thee

As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger bed There to bend the knee before Him whom heav'n and earth adore

So may we with willing feet ever seek Thy mercy seat

As their precious gifts they laid at Thy manger roughly made So may we with holy joy pure and free from sin's alloy

All our costliest treasures bring Christ to Thee our heav'nly King

Holy Jesus ev'ry day keep us in the narrow way And when earthly things are past bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide where no clouds Thy glory hide
