“NANOWRIMO” COMES TO NASHOBA Early recognition of November as “National Writing Month” occurred in Nashoba’s Media Center on November 4, 2015. School librarian Tracy Landry invited Holly Thompson, poet and novelist, to share tips about the creative process. Throughout the course of the day, Ms. Thompson offered two different workshops followed by time for questions and answers. The earlier workshop provided suggestions about how writ- ers find inspiration in daily events or random interactions. Ash is Thompson’s novel inspired by an incident which hap- pened in the shadow of Mt. Sakurajima, an active volcano in Japan. Ms. Thompson lived in Japan for 20 years and shared many observations about the culture. She also wryly observed at the end of the day that students asked the same question: “Is it a good idea to kill off the main charac- ter at the end?” Follow-up activities happened in English classes as teachers encouraged students in grades nine through twelve to write creatively. Reactions to the writer and her presentation were positive. Students commented that the presentation was “eye opening,” inspiring,” and “helpful to learn how a writer sees things.” Some students accepted the challenge to write a novel this November. One student even requested Ms. Thompson’s email address. This was not Holly Thompson’s first visit to the high school. Teachers and students alike hope that it is not her last! FRIENDS OF MUSIC NEWS Nashoba Students Chosen for the Central District Music Festival Congratulations to all the students who audi- tioned for the Central District Music Festival this year. Over 900 Central Massachusetts students from 60 different schools vied for admission to sing or play at the festival to be held in Mechanics Hall in January. Only 370 students out of the 902 who auditioned were successful. These students are divided among the chorus, band, orchestra, and jazz band that will appear on the program. In addition to this, the top 10% of the accepted students were recommended to try out for the All-State Music Festival to be held in Sym- phony Hall, Boston, in March. The following Nashoba stu- dents will attend the festival: Daniel Yapp - Jazz Trumpet, who also received an All-State recommendation, Evan Daisy - Jazz Trombone, who also received an All-State recommen- dation for Jazz Trombone and for Concert Oboe, and Shane LeRoy - Tenor in the Chorus. Not to mention, the Best Buddies Choir will dazzle us with some Disney! Selections for the band concert will include music by Duke Ellington, The Nutcracker Suite, and a playing of and narra- tion of, "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus," as well as our yearly rendition of Sleigh Ride. Friends of Music Meeting: December 14th Parents, please join us at our next meeting on Monday, December 14th, at 6:30 pm, in the chorus room.

NASHOBA FRIENDS OF DRAMA * Next meeting: Wednesday, December 2nd at 6:00 pm in the auditorium foyer. All parents welcome! Our fall play, Fame, was presented by a very talented cast, crew, and team of volunteers the weekend of November 20th-22nd. Audiences were quite im-pressed by the production in which characters struggled for acceptance as they began their pursuit of fame at the School for the Performing Arts. Many thanks to director Allison Martell-Bengston, to the numerous parent and student volunteers for another fab-ulous run, and to those patrons who support Nashoba Friends of Drama. Stay tuned for the announcement of our spring musical! The class plays will soon be underway. Students should check with Mrs. Martell-Bengston for more information if they are interested in participating. Mark your calendars and be sure to attend this fabulous competition where each class presents their short play, directed, produced and performed entirely by the students! The class play completion will take place on Friday, January 29th. Auditions for the Spring Musical (which is yet to be an-nounced…stay tuned!) will be held Monday, January 4th and Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 at 5:30 pm SHARP, in the NRHS auditorium. Please note: students wishing to audition may attend either evening, and only need to attend one. During the audition, students will be taught both a song and a short dance sequence to perform and asked to do a cold reading from the script. Dress appro-priately for an audition (appropriate shoes for dancing, loose-fitting clothes to move easily in). Auditions will take approximately three hours, depending upon the number of students auditioning. Please visit our website at www.NashobaDrama.com or contact Kim Storey ([email protected]) for more information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Meals on Wheels Program of Minuteman Senior Ser-vices provides a hot lunch to homebound seniors on Tues-days and Thursdays in Stow, 52 weeks a year, excluding holidays. These meals assist the older adult who is not capable of preparing at least one hot nutritious meal a day. In many cases, Meals on Wheels allows them to live in the dignity and comfort of their own homes. We also provide a Congregate Lunch at The First Parish Church in Stow on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are in need of a Meals on Wheels driver on Thursdays, and also someone to help in the kitchen on Tuesdays. Do you have an hour or so to spare once a month or more? For more infor-mation on volunteering or to apply, call 781-221-7093, email [email protected], or visit our web-site atwww.minutemansenior.org. Thank you!
