Project Framework: FONA

German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF) research frameworkprogramme „Research for sustainable development“ (FONA, since 2005)

aims at implementing the national Sustainability Strategy (i.a. 40% GHG reduction up to 2020, doubling of resource efficiency,…) and the High-Tech strategy of the German government

Central elements of the current FONA 3 programme are three guiding initiatives:

• National Platform for the City of the Future: Strategic Research Agenda

• Aim: to promote urban restructuring in order to create CO2-neutral, energy-

efficient and climate-adapted cities.

• Experts from local authorities, science, industry

and politics were involved in drafting this strategy

Citizens and “Smart” : Conclusions

• An important part of the participants stated not to know what “smart” means or

not to be sure. SmarterCity Initiative almost unknown.

• “Smart” did not come up explicitly, but several smart city elements are named in

the visions

• Smart technologies as instruments, not as goal

• Concerns, fears

• Not in focus: data, privacy – not yet?
