with some ‘pirates’ and classical delights from the Hope Wind Ensemble.

Three stand-out events will be afternoon tea and entertainment at The Yellow Broom; a Cole Porter tribute with lunch at the Swettenham Arms, and our ever-popular Comedy Night. By popular demand, we have included two photography workshops, and workshops covering sourdough baking (Roberts Bakery master bakers), jewellery production, and memoir writing. There are also free ‘fringe’ events during the Goosfest fortnight, including music in both our local pubs.

Goosfest is a ‘not-for-profit’ organisation and we aim to keep our quality high and our tickets prices low. This is only possible through the loyal support of our regular audience, sponsors and Goostrey Parish Council. Each year our programme is devised and managed by a small group of individuals and a band of dedicated helpers. If you would like to be involved in any way, or have any suggestions for future events, please let us know.

If you have not been to a Goosfest event before, come and join us. Make the most of such a fantastic cultural opportunity on your doorstep. To our regular Goosfesters, a welcome return!

www.goosfest.com

We’re delighted to welcome you to a fantastic line-up of events in this year’s Goosfest, building on the success of our programmes over the past 11 years.

Our growing reputation of hosting one of the best music and arts festivals in the North-West means that we can attract an increasingly diverse mix of both well-known and up-and-coming acts. We work hard to put together a programme which we hope offers something for everyone, but we also want to challenge you to experience something new. With all 26 events held within the vicinity of Goostrey, now’s the time to try something different, as well as types of event you might already be familiar with.

Goosfest ’18 offers a great programme of music, drama, lectures, workshops and social opportunities. And if last year’s festival is anything to go by, we expect that the vast majority will be a sell-out – so don’t be slow to book tickets. This year, we’ve invested in a new-look website, which we hope will evolve to include audience reviews and festival feedback.

Some highlights for 2018: fun-filled comedy with Barry Cryer and Colin Sell; music from The Christians; a joint event with The Royal Geographical Society-IBG featuring intrepid explorer Benedict Allen; a 1960’s evening with The Revolvers; children’s entertainment

Friday 5th October Snake Davis – Classic Sax SolosGoostrey Village Hall: 8pm – (Licensed bar opens 7pm)Tickets £15

Snake Davis and his soulful melodic sax get Goosfest ’18 off to a fabulous start, and this will be a night to remember. Snake Davis is an internationally renowned saxophonist, bringing his five-piece band to Goosfest ‘18 with an evening of music that crosses genres but always reaches out to your soul, thanks to the band’s legendary enthusiasm and professionalism.

Snake Davis has played with some of the biggest names in contemporary music. He’s had a long collaboration with Heather Small of M-People; toured the world with Lisa Stansfield, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, and played with James Brown, Paul McCartney, George Michael and Tina Turner, to name but a few.

He wrote the iconic sax solo on Take That’s hit record A Million Love Songs. Unfortunately, it didn’t make his fortune! He was paid as a session musician and famously earned the equivalent of £18 for his contribution to the single, which is regularly voted one of the most romantic love songs of all time.

“Snake is a joy to work alongside. His musical skills have no limit, in fact he is as free as a bird.”

Barry Cryer and Colin Sell - the Ant and Dec of the Sanatogen Set - reunite to bring you a new show, devised by them after the visitors left. Cryer, still a “Sprightly Veteran” (Undertakers Gazette), and Sell, a “Legendary Virtuoso” (Pensioners Website), combine to entertain you with songs, jokes and the amazing realisation that they’re still here. Join them before they come apart.

Sunday 7th OctoberThe Music and Life of Bob DylanRik Roberts & Les Renshaw (Guitars and songs) – John Lindley (Spoken word)Goostrey Village Hall: 7pm (Licensed bar opens 6.15pm)Tickets £10

This performance brings together two highly talented musicians and a former Cheshire Poet Laureate (and expert on the life of Robert Zimmerman AKA Bob Dylan). They will entertain and educate you about Bob Dylan and give you an insight into the music and enigmatic life of a man who went from being a major voice of the 1960’s protest movement to receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in 2016.

Rik Roberts is a graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire and a former ‘Young Musician of the Year’ contestant. He studied with international classical guitarists Craig Ogden and Simon Dinnigan and with composers Andrew Downes and John Mayor. In his solo concert performances, he combines both classical and cross-over repertoire, covering a wide range of styles from Baroque to Blues, Classical, Spanish, Jazz and Folk.

Les Renshaw is also a highly talented guitarist from the North West who plays regularly in several jazz and guitar groups that perform in the Greater Manchester area. Les and Rik have recently put together a highly entertaining programme about the music and songs of Bob Dylan.

John Lindley is well known to Goosfest and Cheshire audiences for his excellent poetry, which is now receiving the national recognition it deserves. John was a former Cheshire Poet Laureate and has published numerous anthologies to critical acclaim. John has also recently released a CD of his own songs. One of John Lindley’s other great passions is the life of Bob Dylan. His knowledge about this iconic figure is encyclopaedic, extending to an analysis and interpretation of his words and songs.

This promises to be a unique experience which will be both entertaining and illuminating!

Tuesday 9th OctoberThe Cyril Caulkin Memorial Lunch What a Swell Party - The Life and Music of Cole PorterThe Swettenham Arms – Lovell Suite: Please be seated at 12.15pm for 12.30pm start. Tickets £18 (Includes a two-course lunch)Singers: Georgina Goodchild, Martin Leake & Janet Ollier, Accompanist: Christina Burgess. Narration: Gordon Hamlin

The team that brought you last year’s sell-out lunchtime Ivor Novello concert returns with an extended line-up and a new showcase of the life and music of one of the Twentieth Century’s greatest popular songwriters.

Cole Porter (1891 - 1964) was one of the most gifted composers and lyricists of the 20th century. Of more than 800 songs he produced during his life, dozens have become standards. These include Anything Goes, Let’s Do It, I Love Paris, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, and Night and Day. Many of his songs have been recorded by other artists, ranging from Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to Annie Lennox and Jimmy Sommerville.

During the late 1920s and 1930s, Cole Porter was the toast of Broadway with successive hit musicals such as ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘Red, Hot and Blue.” He also wrote many songs that featured in famous Hollywood movies such as ‘High Society,’ ‘Can-Can’ and ‘Silk Stockings.’

Our programme examines the range and various styles of popular music he produced, as well as looking at his life of excess and tragedy.

Whilst we entertain you, enjoy a two-course lunch in the idyllic church-side, 16th century setting of Cheshire’s Swettenham Arms.

This annual ‘musical’ lunch is oversubscribed each year so early booking is a must, to avoid disappointment.

Dr. Philip Morgan will deliver a lecture on ‘The History of the World viewed from Chester.’ Ranulf Higden, Cheshire man and monk, wrote the most popular medieval history of the world, and also had a good deal to say about lust, adultery, and even how to recover virginity. Here is the story of a remarkable career. This lecture is a joint event between Goostrey Guild and Goosfest.

Philip Morgan is a medieval historian at Keele University, editor of the Cheshire Domesday, and of a study of warfare practiced by Cheshire men and even the occasional Cheshire dog.

Also on Wednesday 10th OctoberStanding in LineA story of the Great War told through songs, readings & imagesBy Lester Simpson, Nigel Corbett and Mike BettisonGoostrey Village Hall: 7.30pm (Licensed bar opens 7pm). Tickets £10

Standing in Line marks the 100th anniversary of the Great War. By the end of the Great War, there were few in this country unaffected by the troubles. Children grew up in the shadow of battle, their fathers either absent or lost. Mothers and wives were left wondering about the young men who never made it back from the trenches, whilst those who did return were often forever marred by the experience.

Standing in Line is a beautiful mix of songs by Lester Simpson and composers of the era, as well as readings from the works of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rudyard Kipling. Simpson reveals the story of his great uncle Albert Scrimshaw, born in1885 in Eastwell, Leicestershire. Joining the ‘Ox and Bucks’ regiment, he marched off to war, never to return. His widow, Annie, continued to live in Derbyshire until her death in the 1970’s. Lester Simpson is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, part of Radio 3 award-winning Coope, Boyes and Simpson. His songs have featured on radio, television, in stage productions and most recently in a co-production with the former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo.

Standing in Line was commissioned by ‘Peace Concerts Passchendaele’ and was first performed in the church at Passchendaele, Belgium.

Jocelyn is an amateur star-gazer. She likes nothing better than being at the top of the local hill on her own with only the night-sky for company,

because Jocelyn firmly believes that one day she will discover something that nobody else has ever discovered.

One minute ago, she found Leonard, lying on his back on the ground in scorched clothing, battered and bruised, muttering about having travelled a long way through the cosmos to be there. Once recovered, Leonard insists he must continue his journey. Tonight, these two fragile souls will go together on a voyage of discovery neither were expecting.

Little Green Men is written by Rob Johnston (Winner of the 2011 Kings Cross Award for New Writing; Long-listed for the 2017 Royal Exchange Bruntwood New Writing Award) and performed by Emma Romy-Jones (Winner of The Stage Award for Excellence, 2016 Edinburgh Fringe) and Christopher Ward (Nominated for Best Actor, 2011 Buxton Fringe).

Wednesday 17th OctoberLiving in the Roman countryside of Cheshire A lecture by Dr. Rob Philpott Goostrey Methodist Church: 10am - 12 noon (With short refreshment interval)Tickets £5 (No charge for Goostrey Guild members)

The major Roman forts and towns of Cheshire are well known, but the Roman countryside has been rather overlooked. Yet exciting recent finds of treasure and farmsteads help to illuminate the obscure rural population of the county at that time.

Dr. Rob Philpott is an archaeological consultant working in the North West of England. He is also a part-time Research Assistant in the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology and a part-time Continuing Education lecturer at the University of Liverpool. He was Head of Archaeology at National Museums Liverpool until 2015. He has been involved for three decades in research into the Romano-British and later rural settlement in lowland North West, through aerial reconnaissance, field walking and excavation, and has excavated and published several Roman, medieval and post-medieval sites in the region. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

This lecture is a joint event between Goostrey Guild and Goosfest.

Thursday, 18th OctoberJeannine Barry and Band – Country & Western NightGoostrey Village Hall: 8pm (Licensed bar opens 7pm)Tickets £12

There’s a real buzz on the Country & Western scene about up-and-coming singer Jeannine Barry, and Goosfest is delighted to have secured a booking with her. Together with her superb band of musicians, Jeannine has agreed to perform a night of authentic Country music as a key part of our Festival.

Last year, Jeannine finished a 5-date U.S. tour in Nashville, followed by a memorable UK tour. She also headlined for the Country2Country launch party at the British Country Music awards. Her latest release climbed to number 3 in the Country iTunes Charts and Jeannine was selected as the only British artist to be part of ‘Nashville Dreaming Volume 1.’ She was also chosen as the only non-American artist to join the big Texas Music Takeover shows in London.

This will be a very popular night for Country fans locally and we suspect there will be some dancing in the aisles.

Friday 19th OctoberGoostrey Goes to SpainGoostrey Village Hall: (Licensed bar opens 6.30pm. Please be seated for meal at 7.30pm)Tickets £17 (Including supper)

Smell the paella and unfurl your fans! This year, Goostrey is going to Spain for a special Goosfest evening. We’ve arranged a heady combination of a delicious Spanish supper, followed by some powerful entertainment by a flamenco dancer, a guitarist and a Spanish singer.

Glenn Sharp and Chico Pere are the two founding members of ‘Calaita Flamenco Son’, based in the UK and Spain. They perform a combination of traditional flamenco palos (styles) and contemporary ‘rumbas.’ Seville-born flamenco singer Chico often writes the lyrics to their songs, based on his life experiences, growing up in Triana-Seville in a family of flamenco musicians and singers.

Glenn Sharp is a session musician, composer and producer on the world music scene. A guitarist who specialises in traditional acoustic music (flamenco and arabic in particular), he has performed and studied traditional music worldwide. Glenn composes and performs production music for film, TV and other media.

They are joined by flamenco dancer and flamenco events organiser Sarah Chambers, who has studied with many leading dancers from Spain over the years, including La Lupi, Olga Pericet,

Maricarmen Guerrero and Pilar Fajardo.

Her performances are authentic flamenco including a wide range of traditional styles from serious to light-hearted musical forms, with pounding rhythms to accompany the haunting melodies.

The pre-show supper is provided by specialist Spanish caterer Su Casa, including a

choice of Paella de Carne or a vegetarian paella, with Tapas Canapés. Come dressed in bright Mediterranean colours, and if your outfit is given a Spanish touch, so much the better. Olé!

Sunday 21st October The Colours of the OrganA recital by George RobeySt. Luke’s Parish Church, Goostrey: 3pmTickets £5

George Robey was born in Kent and was Organ Scholar at Durham University, reading music. He developed his interest in computers and computer music at that time, producing the first undergraduate computer generated composition in the UK, as well as continuing his organ studies with David Hill.

Although George has followed a career in IT, music has continued to be a very important activity with choir and orchestral work, concert tours in France and Germany. George has also widened his musical interests, founding an 18-piece Rhythm & Blues band – ‘The Wall of Sound’ - and playing with a number of other bands (including, briefly, a stint with an Abba tribute band). Now based in Cranage, George has, most recently, given recitals and played for services including Reading Town Hall, Cartmel Priory, Chester Cathedral, Tewkesbury Abbey.

This will be a varied recital which aims to show the different aspects and sound colours that the organ can produce, with music from the 16th Century to the present day. George will talk about the pieces as well as explaining what’s happening, to produce a varied and very accessible programme of music – sacred and secular.

Benedict Allen is one of the world’s leading explorers, famous for his technique of not taking a GPS, phone or normal “backup” but instead relying on skills he has learnt from indigenous people. He has published ten books – two of them best sellers – and made seven TV series for the BBC.

With his usual enthusiasm and humour, Benedict shares the true story of his recent expedition to the remotest forests of PNG, a daring journey
