President’s Message

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - July 2016

Last month, Diane and I led a group of college students, some recently graduated, on a tour of the New York fashion industry. We took the red-eye flight out of Burbank and arrived in New York early the morning of June 12. Our ground transportation took us to our hotel where we dropped our luggage. We then walked to a local diner for breakfast, came back to the hotel to meet our guide, and started off on the first of our many appointments.

That morning, we began to hear about a shooting in an Orlando night club. We did not really have access to news other than our phones, but slowly, the enormity of the massacre began to take shape.

On Tuesday night, as a planned part of our trip, we went to see the musical Kinky Boots. It is the story of a young man, Charlie, who inherits his father’s failing shoe manufacturing business. Returning to his factory, Charlie begins the process of shutting down when an employee challenges him that other manufacturers have survived marketing to niche markets. Charlie remembers a meeting and a conversation with a flamboyant drag queen performer, Lola, about how her boots, vital to her performance, often fail because they are not designed for the weight of a man. He recruits Lola to help him develop a line of boots to fit this market.

In the course of the play, the various characters are forced to confront their own self-perceptions, their ingrained prejudices and insecurities, and their ability (or inability) to accept people as they are.

As the cast was taking it’s curtain call, one cast member stepped forward to pay tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting. He read from the lyrics of the closing musical number, imploring we “ladies and gentlemen, and those who have yet to make up their minds” to:

One: Pursue the truth, Two: Learn something new, Three: Accept yourself and you'll accept others too, Four: Let love shine, Five: Let pride be your guide, Six: Change the world when you change your mind!

Number five takes some explanation. We are not talking about being aloof and self-important, but being self-aware and self-respecting.

I was particularly struck by the last suggestion. Norman Vincent Peale said, “change your thoughts and you change your world.” That is different. Changing one’s own world is introspective. Changing the world is tikkun olam, “repairing the world.”

Changing one’s mind about ingrained attitudes is not easy. In requires us to confront our beliefs, measure them against what we can learn and observe, and often adopt a new way of thinking about things. Sometimes we find we do not really change our mind, but reaffirm our beliefs, which is not a bad thing. But sometimes, changing one’s mind is liberating and exhilarating. It can allow us to interact more positively with people and circumstances around us. We can decrease hatred and mistrust and increase love and understanding. It can help us be part of repairing the world.

-- IRA L. GOLDSTEIN, President

before they can be licensed to drive?

I have a confession. I have a license to own a gun. I took the test. It was a joke. Ten questions open book at a local gun store.

There was a background check to purchase a weapon, but as long as I passed the check, I could own a very destructive device. Before I go into my proposal, let me say that all assault type weapons, such as was used in Orlando, should be banned from sale to any person or organization with the exception of the military or law enforcement.  Also, all kits that can render semi‐automatic weapons into automatic weapons should be banned from sale. Unfortunately, we cannot ban from the internet or other forms of literature, the “how to …” reading matter.

So here is my proposal. A minimum 30 hour course in gun safety including 15 hours of history, science and maintenance of guns and 15 hours of actual shooting on a range.  In order to be enrolled in this gun safety course, a person must be 18 years of age or older, not have a criminal record, including not be on the terrorist watch list, such as the no fly list, and have a recent, within 6 months, medical exam, signed by a physician, listing all medications taken, history of any neurological dysfunctions (seizures, mental illness, etc.) and have a signed “note” that, in the opinion of a physician, this person is deemed capable of possessing a fire arm.

How will these courses be paid for? With a registration fee just like automobile license fees. People who are eager to drive cars pay all the fees including drivers’ training. People who want to purchase a weapon will willingly pay for shooter’s training. And like driver’s licenses, they must be renewed.  Further, to own different types of weapons one needs a different type of license, like Class A, C and motorcycle licenses.

True, this will not end gun violence, but it will produce a group of gun owners who know how to shoot, how dangerous it is to shoot and could eliminate those who should not shoot.

Let us remember all innocent victims in a constructive, learning, intelligent way and not use our time of mourning to detract from our constitutional rights but re‐affirm our belief that education is the path to end violence.

B’ahava,

Rabbi Mark

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, DAVID GOLDSTEIN

I hope everyone is having a an enjoyable and relaxing summer so far. Although our Religious School students are currently on their well-deserved summer vacation, we are busily preparing for next year and have exciting news to share. After many years of preparation, our Temple Beth Emet Early Childhood Center is currently in the final planning stages and we are anticipating opening our doors to children ages 2-5 this fall. I will have further details to share in next month’s column, but we plan to start out with about 10-15 students and our hours of operation will be from approximately 7:45 AM-5:00 PM Monday through Friday. We are currently enrolling members of our charter class, and if you or family or friends have young children in this age group, we invite you to join us in this exciting venture. Please contact the Temple Office for further information (the telephone number for the Temple Office can be seen at the bottom of this page). I will be sending out enrollment information for next year’s Religious School session during the month of August via email. Our plan is to have families complete the forms in advance and then enroll in person this year, I will have further scheduling information next month. If you know of anyone who would like to join our Religious School community for the first time this fall, please feel free to have them contact the Temple Office, the Rabbi, or me and we will be glad to give them enrollment information and/or a tour of our facility.

A Message From Cathy Zitnick, The Sisterhood President Dear Members:

We had a good turnout at our last meeting at the Coral Café in Burbank. I am beginning to think that this is a favorite of the ladies because they get to combine our meetings with breakfast. We will not have a meeting this month, due to the July 4th holiday. Our next meeting will be August 7th at 10:00 AM . I will send an e-mail blast out to find out if you would like to meet in Blum Hall at the Temple, or at the Coral Café again. I would like to invite you to attend our next meeting. I am sure that there are many of you out there that I haven’t met yet, and I look forward to making your acquaintance. For the past couple of years, before I was installed as President, Shirley Abramson gave a check to the Board at their June meetings on behalf of the Sisterhood. This year I put it to a vote, whether the ladies wanted to give money to the Temple or a specific gift. They chose a specific gift. Then I put it to the ladies to come up with suggestions for that gift. Ruth Glick suggested we should donate new carpet. It turned out that Howard Saper arrived that Sunday, to pick up his son from Religious School, and he was happy to show us a sample of some carpet he thought would be perfect for the Temple and give us a quote. This was at the April Sisterhood meeting. In May, I made a presentation to the Board and told them that the Sisterhood would again be donating a gift, but this time it would be to carpet Blum Hall and the Sanctuary. To say the least, the Board was thrilled.

After some negotiations with Howard Saper, we were able to finalize the arrangements for the installation. I spent one of my days off work at the Temple in a back office studying, while the Installers pulled up the old carpet and installed the new. It took them about twelve hours to move some of the furniture, install the carpet, and replace the furniture back to where everything it belonged. The end result was a success! The new carpet is lighter in color and it makes the rooms appear brighter and larger. I cannot tell you how fantastic Blum Hall and the Sanctuary look now. Both rooms look clean and spacious. I am so thankful to Ruth Glick for having suggested the carpeting. Moreover, I am so thankful to the Sisterhood for having the funds to be able to make this gift a reality. If you haven’t seen the new carpet, you should definitely try to come to Temple and see it. By the way, Friday, July 1st, which is Rabbi Sobel’s 30th anniversary with the Temple, will be a very festive event. I hope to see you there. And you can see the carpet, too. I am sure it will impress and please you.

I organized a fundraiser for the Sisterhood on June 16th with Pizza Rev. They have fantastic pizza. I prepared a flyer and asked to have it published in the Chai Times, and it was announced on the One-Call-Now. Twenty percent of our total bill was donated to the Sisterhood. Even though our event was in Burbank and all day long, so that you all could make time in your day to attend, our attendance was very poor. I want to remind you all that it is so important to support the activities of the Sisterhood. We are an important part of the Temple and the more funds we raise, the more we can do more nice things, like donate carpet, for our Temple.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?

Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them join our Temple, as an adult.

Please send e-mail and give me the following information: The name of the Student;

Class Level; Address; Name of the University, and; If the Student is a member of any organization or club on campus.

The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish learning. I look forward hearing from you!

Thank you,

Cathy Zitnick TBE Sisterhood, President TBE College Outreach [email protected]

TEMPLE BETH EMET BOOK CLUB - FRAN BOURNE-JOHNSON

We have a wonderful new Jewish book club at Temple!

Conducted by Fran Bourne-Johnson.

Where: Blum Hall at TBE

When: Tuesday, July 26, 2016 7:00PM to 8:30 PM

What is the book we will read and discuss: The Promise by Chaim Potok

Synopsis: In this sequel to Potok’s novel The Chosen, the theme of the conflict between traditional and modern Orthodox Judaism that runs throughout The Chosen is expanded here against the backdrop of the changes that have taken place in Reuven and Danny's world in the period of time between the two novels: following World War II, European survivors of the Holocaust have come to America, rebuilding their shattered lives and often making their fiercely traditionalist religious viewpoint felt among their people.

Where to get the book: The book is available on Kindle and Amazon.com, as well as local libraries.

Please read the book and be prepared to discuss it. Cost of Participating: Free!

The Book Club will meet on the 4thTuesday of every month. The group will discuss what the next book will be at the meeting, as well as the format of the discussion group.

You may contact Fran at [email protected] or call her at (617) 306-3835.

Fran Bourne-Johnson is enthusiastically inviting you to attend. She will warmly welcome the readers and a lively discussion is expected. The book she is recommending is both exciting and interesting. What a great way to socialize AND improve your mind! Let’s get together and share a great reading experience.

This Is Your Personal Invitation to Join Temple Beth Emet’s Sisterhood

Sisterhood is a group of friends who work together for our Temple, our children, and our community, in a very tangible way. Our President, Cathy Zitnick, will be happy to hear from you. Call her at (818) 292-7180 or e-mail: [email protected]. She will be happy to acquaint you with what we do and find out what your interests are. We are sure you will fit in and we will be happy to welcome you!

We meet the first Sunday of every month at 10:00 AM in Blum Hall. Please join us. Dues are only $15 per year (commencing September of every year). Please fill out this form, cut it out and send it with your payment to: TBE Sisterhood, c/o TEMPLE BETH EMET, 600 N. Buena Vista Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505; or just leave it with the Temple Office.

LET’S TURN OUR POCKET CHANGE INTO REAL CHANGE!

Who is Just5Club? J5 is a nonprofit organization helping those who are silently struggling financially. In November of 2013, six young professionals came up with a simple idea; a concept that beautifully ties the act of giving with uniting individuals from all corners of the world. At J5, we believe in the power of unity, where each individual has the power to make a difference. hen people are united with one common goal in mind, even the smallest amount can make a significant impact in the world we live in today.

Here’s how it works, it’s easy!

1. Log on to www.j5club.org

2. Sign up to become a Just5 member with your credit card

3. Each month, your credit card is charged JUST $5.

4. At the end of every month, all the money is gathered and donated to a family or individual in need of financial assistance. Whether it’s an emergency of being evicted from one’s home or payment for medical bills, such as cancer treatment, J5 is there to help!

*100% of our members’ donations go to the recipients; all other fees are sponsored from either the board or other donors! *Each month, we send out a J5 Newsletter, letting our members and other subscribers know exactly whom they have helped. Contact us: [email protected]
