Best Practices in Urban Development

9 – 9:30 am HEART OF OUR CITY MASTER PLAN - CREATING A QUALITY PUBLIC REALM

George Kuhl, Downtown Revitalization Manager, City of Lethbridge (AB)

Communities need to recognize that streets are a key component of the urban open andgreen space experience and should be planned with this in mind, while reinforcing and building upon the distinct qualities and characteristics that already exist. This presentation will demonstrate how downtown should be a source of pride and community meaning; and be designed with an emphasis on craftsmanship, quality and permanence. Downtown should also be green - sustainable and beautifully landscaped.

9:30 – 9:45 am FOLLOWING THE 4-POINT APPROACH TO SUCCESSFUL DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION

Ted Stilson, Managing Coordinator, Downtown Lethbridge BRZ & Lethbridge Main Street Project (AB)

The Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) has followed the Alberta Main Street Program’s 4-point approach (organization, marketing, economic development, design) since its inception in our community in 2000. This presentation will showcase the successful revitalization campaign based on that approach, and the partnerships formed with a number of organizations, including Communities in Bloom and the City of Lethbridge, in order to help revitalize our downtown.

It is important to made surefertilizer stays where it has the most benefit to your lawn and the least impact on theenvironment and our waterways.
