“Prayer” Every day I want to speak with you. And every day something more important calls for my attention—the drugstore, the beauty products, the luggage I need to buy for the trip. Even now I can hardly sit here Among the falling piles of paper and clothing, the garbage trucks outside already screeching and banging. The mystics say you are as close as my own breath. Why do I flee from you? My days and nights pour through me like complaints And become a story I forget to tell. Help me. Even as I write these words I am planning To rise from a chair as soon as I finish this sentence.

Marie Howe (b.1950)

Prayer is what we are all about as a religious people. The spiritual writer Frederick Buechner remarks that: “According to Jesus, the most important thing about prayer is to keep at it.” That’s the hard part. Today’s poet Marie Howe would agree. Something so simple can be so difficult and tedious, and let’s face it, at times excruciatingly boring. The Dominican medieval mystic, Meister Eckhard, wrote bluntly: “We do not pray. We are prayed.” He got that from St. Paul who taught that prayer is the Holy Spirit praying through us otherwise how could we hope to address the Creator of the universe. God Himself opens the lines of communication and gives us the words lest we make blubbering fools of ourselves. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel can give us some encouragement in our prayers so we don’t lose heart: “We do not communicate with God. We only make ourselves communicable to Him.” That is it in a nutshell. Another gem from Rabbi Heschel: “There is something far greater than my desire to pray, namely, God’s desire that I pray. Lent is only days away. Let’s not jump the gun on a penitential season but plan for the journey. I can think of no one better to guide us than Rabbi Heschel.

LENT “FAST AND ABSTINENCE”

During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the Faithful to reflect a spirit in penance in their daily life through performing acts of fast and abstinence. “Fasting” requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. “Abstinence” prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their entire life. Those not obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence.

FRIDAYS in Lent are days of abstinence.

Dear Parishioners, As you are aware, last fall we engaged in a capital campaign in concert with the NY Archdiocese entitled “Renew & Rebuild (or “R&R”).” The focus of this campaign was to identify and address infrastructure needs in our parish and to support other Archdiocesan objectives. Our share of the money raised will be used in our parish to maintain our assets, improve our environment, and address security needs. The Renew & Rebuild campaign ended in December. We wish to extend a huge THANK YOU to you, the members of our Holy Innocents parish community. We have received pledges of over $900,000 which will be collected over a five-year period. The first $69,500 will satisfy our 2017 Cardinal’s Appeal goal for which we did not have a separate 2017 solicitation to our parishioners. Where does the R&R money go? As a reminder, there are five key initiatives identified in our campaign:

Replacing the church HVAC system. This project was completed last fall. We borrowed over $200,000 to complete the project, and will pay that loan down as our first priority.

Security installation to provide a safe environment for the parish, and particularly around our classrooms protecting children attending religious education.

Improved acoustics and soundproofing the walls and ceilings in the parish hall.

Rectory repairs and maintenance on the steps and railings.

Addressing the ongoing maintenance and repairs on the rectory roof. How do the logistics work? Pledges are paid directly to the Archdiocese over a five-year period. Our share (74%) of the R&R funds comes to us from the Archdiocese during the year. The projects will be addressed as funds are received. In order to properly manage your generous donations, we have established a Renew and Rebuild Committee whose sole purpose is to ensure proper stewardship of this program through oversight, project selection, bid process, timing and completion. This group of parishioners (most of whom were on the original R&R Capital Campaign committee) will provide progress updates to the Parish Council, Finance Committee, and the Parish Community at large through our website and bulletin. Looking forward, with the funds from R&R supporting our infrastructure needs, we will resume our annual fundraising raffle this spring to help support our many vital parish programs (the raffle was suspended last year to focus on the R&R campaign). Meanwhile, the 2018 Archdiocesan Cardinal’s Appeal launched in January. These two annual programs provide over $40,000 to our parish each year and are necessary to support annual operations. We are deeply grateful for your personal and financial support and the sacrifices that you make to keep Holy Innocents so strong and enduring. Again, thank you. Holy Innocents Parish Council

We congratulate all of our students who received their First Reconciliation this past week. We thank the following Catechists and Assistants for their dedication, time, and help in the preparations of this Sacrament:

Josephine Cardone & Jane Begley Sara Hukkanen & Karen Cappa

Rosemarie Pomilla & Daneen Mancuso Irene Soden & Danielle Gass

Kathleen Trudo & Molly Hudson Our students were all so prayerful and reverent. They were also very excited to see their parents receive the Sacrament! Always remember that there is more joy in heaven when the lost one has returned! We hope and pray that it was a wonderful experience for all. Our Fifth Graders from our Saturday Session had a very successful bake sale last week. All the proceeds went to the supplies needed for their Valentine/Lenten Service Project. Under the leadership of Danielle Kaley, our Fifth Graders will be making “Prayer Pillows” for the residents of Mother Cabrini Nursing Home. We thank Danielle’s Assistant, Andrea Keolamphu, and the Mom’s for helping with the donations of baked goods that were enjoyed by all!!! Times like these I like to call FAITH IN ACTION! We thank all of our parishioners for their continued support and prayers.

Maria Lamorgese, Director Phone 914-769-3297 ext. 1 [email protected] Looking ahead: We do not have classes from February 19th through February 24th. Classes will resume on Monday, February 26, 2018.

We ask you to join the Music Ministry in wishing our director, Joe, a very Happy Birthday this Saturday, February 10

th.

Joe shares his special day with famous people in a variety of areas – comedian Jimmy Durante, actors Robert Wagner and Laura Dern, film composer Jerry Goldsmith, musicians, Cliff Burton, and Roberta Flack, sports figures Mark Spitz, Greg Norman, and Lenny Dykstra, and political commentators Glenn Beck, and George Stephanopoulos. This date also marks the feast day of St. Scholastica, the patron saint of nuns, and intercessor against storms and rain, she was born in Italy and was the twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia. Happy Birthday, Joe, from all of us! God has blessed our Music Ministry and our parish with your presence and your talent. May He continue to bless you today and always!! The Music Ministry also wishes to congratulate all the children of the parish who received the sacrament of First Reconciliation this past week. This sacrament is one of the Catholic Church’s greatest offerings, but also the least understood. We are reconciled with God, through the intercession of the priest. Receiving this sacrament is a great source of grace, the grace that helps us live a Christian life. All Catholics should embrace this sacrament as a gift from a loving God. Hopefully your first reconciliation will inspire those around you, including us, to once again take part in this sacrament. Confessions at Holy Innocents are heard every Saturday from 4:30 to 5 PM. Other times can be arranged by request to the office and priest availability. Congratulations to all, we are very proud of you!

First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46

The Lord tells Moses and Aaron that anyone bearing the sore of leprosy must first be seen by Aaron or one of the other priests, and that as long as the sore is upon him, “He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” Second Reading: I Corinthians 10:31—11:1

Paul instructs the Corinthians to do everything for the glory of God, to avoid offending others, and to be imitators of Christ. Gospel: Mark 1:40-45

Jesus takes pity on a leper and cures him of his disease with a warning not to say but to show himself to the priest and make an offering. Instead of remaining silent, the leper greatly publicized the healing, making it impossible for Jesus to enter the town openly.

CYO BASKETBALL The 5th grade girls CYO black team will be hosting a bake sale on Sunday February 11th after the 9am and 11am Masses to raise money for the Panther Pioneer League.

The Panther Pioneer League is a special needs athletic club for Pleasantville High School students. The goal of the club is to provide opportunities for special needs students to compete in interscholastic sports just as their peers do. Students participate in Soccer, Floor Hockey, Basketball, and Volleyball, which rotate quarterly. Students who participate in the Pioneer League gain self-confidence, problem solving skills, and team-building skills while promoting positive self-image and achieve a healthy life style. These skills are not only seen on the field but in the community and classroom. This is the first year the club has been available for Pleasantville High School students. The students have been attending weekly practices and games as well as devoting time at home to build their skills. In order for our students to continue to participate in this league, we need to raise funds. The money will allow us to purchase all cost (i.e. equipment and staffing) needed for our students to continue in the league. The girls volunteered at the first ever Pioneer Homecoming back in December, where they were able to meet the students and cheer them on as they competed against Carmel in soccer. Their hope is to raise enough money at the bake sale to donate them purchase some much needed new equipment. Please

Thank you for celebrating the Eucharist with us. Please stay after the final blessing and join in

singing our recessional hymn.

Please take a copy of the bulletin with you and patronize the advertisers listed on the

back of the bulletin.
