APC® by Schneider Electric Solutions for Cisco® Unified Computing System (UCS) Blade Applications

The Cisco Unified Computing System is a next-generation data center platform that unites compute, network, storage access, and virtualization into a cohesive system designed to reduce TCO and increase business agility. The system integrates a low-latency, lossless 10GE unified network fabric with enterprise-class, x86-architecture servers. The system is an integrated, scalable, multi-chassis platform in which all resources participate in a unified management domain.

Blade server applications present unique challenges in terms of rack level power distribution, cable management and physical access space requirements for hot-swappable blade components.

This application guide provides recommendations for enclosures, rack power distribution, and cable management to best address the specific physical infrastructure needs of the Cisco UCS 5108 Blade Server Chassis. The recommended solutions in this guide are based on physical verification and testing of an actual Cisco UCS 5108 Blade Server Chassis mounted in APC enclosures.

APC Solutions for Cisco®

Catalyst® SwitchesThe Cisco / APC relationship began in 1998 with a focus on non-stop networking and has since grown to include the integration of various platforms, the sharing of intellectual property for white papers and design specifications as well as joint field engagements.

Power protection is a crucial component of VoIP & IP Telephony networks and helps to ensure that they meet the demands for “always available” systems. To achieve the highest levels of availability, it is essential that Layer 0 solutions support VoIP & IP Telephony networks, in line with your business requirements. This document discusses the power needs of Cisco® Catalyst® Switches and appropriate APC UPS solutions.

APC Smart-UPS® support for Cisco®

Unity Express® and CUCM 6.x:APC Smart-UPS supports Cisco Unity Express with exclusive built-in UPS support. This Cisco Compatible integration provides for graceful unattended shutdown of voicemail and automated attendant services in the event of an extended power outage, thus preventing data corruption and improving time-to-recovery. In this application, Smart-UPS communicates serially and requires the APC Unity Express UPS Simple Signaling Cable (APC Part#AP9840)

Additionally, APC Smart-UPS 750XL and Smart-UPS 1500/1500RM gracefully shutdown Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 6.x via a point-to-point direct Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection in the event of an extended power outage.

Choose Smart-UPS® RT or Symmetra®

RM/LX for Catalyst 6500 and High Density Environments:Smart-UPS RT, double conversion online family of UPSs offers performance for high density voice and data networks. Supports up to 20kVA in a 12U rack or stack form factor.

Symmetra offers scalability and the additional protection of N+1 redundancy. Symmetra supports from 2-6kVA (RM) in a rack-optimized form or up to 16kVA (LX) in a rack or tower form.

How to choose the right APC Smart-UPS® for a Cisco® Catalyst®

Family Switch?

Step 1: Consider Your Application> What model Cisco Catalyst Switch will the Smart-UPS support?> What is the input voltage for the switch?> Will the Cisco Catalyst Switch support PoE devices? If so, how many and what PoE class?> What is the plug type for the Cisco Catalyst Switch?> How many power supplies does the switch have?> What will be the total loading on the UPS VA and Watts, both initially and in the future?> How much runtime is required if the power goes out?

Step 2: Use the UPS Selector or Call APC for Assistancewww.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/ or 1-800-800-4272 in North America. In other countries, please contact your local APC office from the list provided on APC.com.

Step 3: Purchase an APC Smart-UPS®

> APC Smart-UPS® is the best solution for the Cisco Catalyst Switch family in the wiring closet. > For mission-critical or remote closets, you may also consider the NetBotz® family of accessories which provide real-time environmental monitoring and visibility to your wiring closet environment. > For dense closet and server room environments, consider InRow® RD.> All of these components are InfraStruXure® Certified to integrate seamlessly with the APC InfraStruXure® system.

APC Smart-UPS® and Smart-UPS® XLThe Smart-UPS & Smart-UPS XL use Line-interactive topology offering high reliability and efficiency with good voltage regulation.

> Smart-UPS series offers power outputs from 750VA to 5kVA (480W to 4kW)

> Smart-UPS XL units are available that allow connection of additional battery strings to increase the system run time.

Power Requirements for Cisco UCS 5108

Source “A”(2) C20

Connectors

Source “B”(2) C20

Connectors

The UCS 5108 Blade Server Chassis includes four, single phase, hot- swappable redundant power supplies with IEC C20 Inlet connections.

In a typical power configuration, two IEC C20 inlets on the UCS 5108 are connected to each power source.

The total power consumption per chassis for typical enterprise applications is 2.0 – 2.5 kW; while a typical peak power consumption is 2.8 – 3.0 kW. In order to allow for loss of one power source, each power source should be sized and provisioned for approximately 3.0kW per chassis loading scenario as indicated below.

Note: High performance computing applications with extremely heavy loading conditions have been tested and measured to draw a peak power consumption of 3.2kW per chassis. Under these conditions, users should provision 3.2kW per chassis.

Rack Enclosure Recommendation

Steps to select the correct enclosure to match site/application requirements:

1. Choose Region and Density: Select the number of chassis expected per enclosure

2. Choose enclosure width: Wider enclosures offer the best use of cable management space and access to blade modules, however site specific limitations may require standard 600mm width enclosure

3. Choose enclosure depth: Deeper enclosures are an alternative to wider enclosures for increased cable management and PDU space

4. Choose the Configuration: Reference the diagrams in this document for configuration recommendations and planning considerations

5. Choose Enclosure and Cable Management from the reference diagrams

The clearance access space required to access the hot swap blade chassis modules require special consideration in the selection and configuration of a proper rack enclosure to match the space requirements for access, power distribution, and data cabling. The specific selection of a properly sized rack enclosure depends upon your site specific data, cabling and rack power positioning preferences.
