Today it was almost like experiencing dejavu, all over again. Kayden and Tonsils were the first boys in our group to be named skipper twice. Great achievement for both of them as they have been leaders in every sense of the word both in how they play and their approach to training each Wednesday night. Both set a great example in how they go about their footy and they well deserved the privilege of leading the boys today. Wednesday night’s training was the best of the year. Match ReportGale force winds greeted us at Lloyd Park this morning for our rematch against the Sharks from Cannes Avenue. Last time we met Bonbeach started strongly, controlling play for the majority of the game only to see our Roos storm home in the last quarter to get the chocolates.

Skills and voices were up, the ball pinged around from group to group and everyone was focused for the majority of the session. We coaching types were thinking it was a sign of things to come and that the boys were ready to play another solid 4 quarters of footy….

Then Sunday came.

Maybe it was the wind, maybe the cold, quite possibly it was the late nights that a number of our young Roos had the night before but we started out lethargic, flat and near disinterested compared to the usual energy filled unit we see run out each Sunday morning.

The Sharks controlled proceedings from the first bounce, due to them being short on numbers Moose & Tyler both offered their services to the opponents

to start the game. Unfortunately for us Moose did as Mooses do and dominated off a wing helping set up the Sharks first goal only minutes in.

While Bonbeach was in control with 6 scoring shots for the quarter there were a few highlights from our boys including a series of multiple efforts from Cam across half back followed with a little vintage MJ pressure to stop another Sharks foray forward. Just before the quarter finished Ryder clunked onto a mountainous grab for a little man in congestion.

The General ran around for the Sharks in the 2nd and he too played his usual quality standard of footy, reading the play well and taking clean grabs in difficult conditions. Yet to kick a goal so far Charlie displayed some fantastic team play after taking a great grab late in the quarter, choosing to centre the ball when many would have had a ping he sacrificed a chance to kick a major so he could give the footy to Tyler who was in a better position…

As the siren sounded to end what was possibly the least inspiring half of footy our boys had played they all sprinted towards the coaches box faster than any of them had moved the entire day. What followed was the under 9’s equivalent of a spray from the coach – while there were no 4 letter words the message was clear. We hoped…..

A different Roos outfit started the second half. Pressure, intensity and repeated efforts from everyone in blue and white saw us end up with a plethora of scoring opportunities.

No one Roo read the play better or benefited more from his rejuvenated teams solid play up the ground than Sammy. Three times he roved the loose ball off a pack, swooping onto the footy with clean hands, avoiding oncoming Sharks with Mick Fanning like agility only to be denied his first major by an unrelenting low pressure system which made kicking truely at the far end of the ground near impossible….

Many a Roo had a ping and yet all were pushed to the far side by the wind and we would finish with a lazy 7 behinds for the quarter. The score didn’t reflect the dominance and swing in momentum that came from our selfless play. A

Roo rampage was a brewin…..

Two goal droughts were ended a few minutes into the last term. One was our teams for the day and the other was for our energetic number 1. After kicking truly a few minutes earlier only to see a Shark opponent get a mitt onto his attempt on the last line of defence Coops 2nd shot on goal for the day was Centre meter perfect.

In a sequence of play which made this gravity stricken unit jump skywards in pure elation Coop kicked his first ever goal after getting into perfect position before the ball did, selling a bag or two of candy to his opponents in red, finishing with a snap straight over the goal umpires head. It was a just reward for a ripping young lad who has worked hard on improving his footy this year.

Our major scoring was ably finished off by The General who now playing in his natural Centre Half Forward role after stints for the other team, across half back and in the ruck. The usual clean hands and reliable right boot saw us closer to an unlikely comeback win.

In the end the head start we gave to a quality opponent was just a little too much to overcome in one half of footy however each and every member of the Roos can be proud in the fact they never stopped trying, finishing off a slow start with a great team effort.

Go Roos…….
