Your estimated cost of attendance (COA) doesn’t just cover your college tuition; it takes into account your basic living expenses too. So think about this: it is going to cost you the same amount to live for the next few years whether you’re in college or not. According to the U.S. Census Bureau,* your added investment in a college education can prepare you to earn an average of $21,000 MORE a year than students who complete only high school.

When comparing financial aid packages from other schools, make sure you are comparing the total cost for attending that school, not just the total financial aid awarded.

SHOPPING SHEET AND NET COST

The Shopping Sheet we provide in your offer letter package provides you with a summary of aid offered, net cost (cost of attendance minus grant(s) and scholarship(s)) and data about Texas A&M University.

Net cost is calculated to assist you and/or your family in determining the cost of school after taking into consideration any funding that does not have to be repaid once you graduate from college.

Students and possibly their parents typically borrow from various student loan programs to help meet the total cost of educational expenses. Loan options are available on page 17 of this booklet.

APPLYING

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is available January 1. We recommend applying as early as possible. Texas A&M has a priority date of March 15. By completing the FAFSA, you are applying for all federal, state and institutional aid. This includes grants, loans and work study. The school code for TAMU is 003632.

Apply for a Personal Identification Number

Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) online at www.pin.ed.gov. Before, during or after you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you and your parents (if you are a dependent student) will need to sign your FAFSA. The FAFSA cannot be processed until it is signed. Using a PIN to sign your FAFSA electronically is by far the fastest and most reliable method.

TEXAS APPLICATION FOR STATE FINANCIAL AID (TASFA)

If you are not eligible to complete the FAFSA because of citizenship or visa status, but you are eligible to be classified as a Texas resident for tuition purposes, you may apply for state financial aid through the TASFA. You must complete the TASFA to be eligible for many scholarships, grants and loans. Texas A&M has a priority date of March 15. All supporting documentation must be submitted before a TASFA is considered complete. You may get a paper TASFA from your local Prospective Student Center or download the application online at financialaid.tamu.edu.

APPLYING

109

Ideally, you would like to have your 2013 tax return filed before applying for financial aid, but we know that is not always possible. To complete your FAFSA/TASFA you will need:

Your Social Security number. Be sure it is correct! (For FAFSA only)

Your driver license, if any. (For FAFSA only)

Your 2013 W-2 forms and other records of money earned.

Yours (and your spouse´s if you are married) 2013 Federal Income Tax Return: IRS 1040, 1040A or 1040 EZ, foreign tax return or tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin

Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federal States of Micronesia or Palau.

Your parents’ 2013 Federal Income Tax Return (if you are a dependent student).

Your 2013 untaxed income records: Social Security Income, Child support received, and/or Worker’s compensation.

Your current bank statements.

Your current business and investment information, business and farm net worth, stock, bond and

other investment records.

Your alien registration or permanent resident card, if you are not a U.S. citizen. (For FAFSA only)

Financial need is determined by the following equation:

DETERMINING YOUR FINANCIAL NEED

Your expected family contribution (EFC) is the amount of out-of-pocket expense that you and your parent(s) are expected to provide toward your educational costs either from income, savings or a non-need-based loan. EFC is calculated from the information you (and your parents/spouse) report on the financial aid application. It is used to determine eligibility for most student aid programs.

Texas A&M determines financial need from the information that is submitted on your financial aid application. Financial need is the basis for offering most student aid programs.

11

AFTER THE APPLICATION

PROCESSING YOUR FINANCIAL AID

Once we receive the results from your financial aid application, we will determine your cost of attendance and calculate your financial aid eligibility for the academic year.

If you are asked to provide additional documentation by Texas A&M University, all requested documents must be received by Scholarships & Financial Aid before your aid can be processed.

NOTE: Not all students will be asked for additional information.

All offers are made on a first come, first served basis with a priority submission date of March 15. You will be notified of your offer by receiving a financial aid package in the mail or via email. If you have received scholarships from outside sources, those resources must be reported to Scholarships & Financial Aid through the Student Data Form in the Scholarships & Financial Aid portal.

Once you have received notice that you have been offered financial aid, log on to the Howdy Portal at howdy.tamu.edu. Click on the My Finances tab and enter the Scholarships & Financial Aid Portal to accept/decline your aid. Accepting your financial aid does not confirm your admission to Texas A&M.

FEDERAL DIRECT PARENT LOAN (PLUS)

The Federal Direct Parent Loan (PLUS) is available to the parents of dependent, undergraduate students. The parent may only borrow up to the cost of attendance (excluding any other financial aid).
