In addition, indications and contraindications for surgical procedures will be presented. Wei F. Chen, MD, FACS 9:45 a.m. Break Creating an Integrated Approach for Non-Surgical 10:00 a.m. and Surgical Treatments This presentation will provide an overview of how the University of Iowa’s Lymphedema Clinic collaborates with the Physical and Occupational Therapy Departments to provide an integrated approach for treating lymphedema. It will present how this collaboration provides positive outcomes for patients. Surgical and non-surgical decision making will also be presented. Mindy Mahoney, BSN, RN-BC, CAPA The Functional Patient: Epidemiology, Arthritis, 11:00 a.m and Musculoskeletal Pain This session will review the available research pertaining to patients with edematous conditions from a functional perspective. The underlying premise of this topic comes from the vision statement of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), “Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience” (apta.org/vision/). In addition, this course will investigate functional outcomes and reporting tools, focusing on the functional limitations that edema and fibrosis present both short-term and long-term David Doubblestein, PT, MS, LLCC, CLT, Cert. It will present the basics of kidney failure/disease and congestive heart failure and the effect of fluid dynamics on the renal and cardiovascular system. Precautions and contraindications will be introduced related to safely moving fluid in the medically fragile patient. Mike Bond, MS, PT, CLT 2:00 p.m. Break

Lymphedema Risk Reduction: Putting the Evidence 2:15 p.m. into Practice Significant confusion exists regarding the best practice for lymphedema risk reduction. This presentation will provide an in-depth look at the risk of developing and managing secondary lymphedema. Current risk reduction strategies will be discussed followed by a review of the current literature. Evidence-based strategies will be presented to assist healthcare providers in educating patients on risk reduction for the development and progression of secondary lymphedema. lymphedema surgical procedures• Describe lymphedema surgical and non-surgical treatment options and

how they are determined• Identify resources regarding functional outcome tools for lymphedema • Describe the need for lymphedema and edema functional limitations

research • Outline a patient’s functional limitations as part of the overall plan of

care, patient assessment, and documentation• Describe basic principles of kidney disease and fluid dynamics of the

renal system• Describe basic principles of congestive heart failure and fluid dynamics

of the cardiovascular system• Identify safety concerns when using fluid movement principles/systems • Describe how to safely move fluid toward the heart in the medically

fragile patient• Describe various risk reduction strategies associated with secondary

lymphedema• Identify current evidence to support or refute risk reduction strategies• Identify client centered protocols for educating patients and care

providers about secondary lymphedema risk reduction • Describe how the small and simple things healthcare professionals do

are often the most important

Saturday, October 28 • 8:00am-1:30pm 1. Edema Management for the Medically Fragile Patient This hands-on course will instruct participants on the use of the lymphatic system for edema reduction in the medically fragile patient. Following an insult to the lymphatic system, there is a potential for fluid and protein build up and resultant limb volume increase. If high protein fluid remains in an area, skin changes (thickening and fibrosis) can occur with secondary pain, delayed wound healing, and functional mobility changes. Therapists often struggle in helping patients with edema management; despite their best efforts with interventions. This course teaches the basics of lymphatic drainage with elements of manual edema mobilization (MEM) to create a new approach and effectiveness to drain or decongest inflammation. This workshop will be lab based and participants should be ready to participate in hands-on, skin to skin contact. Mike Bond, MS, PT, CLT, DOR

2. Manual Lymphatic Techniques-Alternative Concepts: Drainage of Joints and Muscles and the Introduction of Lymphatic Drainage Assessment This workshop will present the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system as it pertains to joints and muscles. The workshop will include a lab that will introduce lymphatic treatment for joints and tender trigger points. The lab will also introduce the concept of lymph drainage assessment including the ability to manually assess lymph drainage and how to utilize this information in the treatment of lymphedema. David Doubblestein, PT, MS, LLCC, CLT, Cert. MDT

3. Rehabilitative Treatment Protocols for Non-Surgical and Surgical Lymphedema Patients This workshop will assist therapists to provide care for non-surgical, pre-surgical, and post-surgical patients with lymphedema. Standard care for lymphedema sufferers includes conservative management of the disease through compression, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and skin care. Through advances in technology and medicine, new surgical procedures are available that can assist with the management of lymphedema when conservative treatment is no longer effective. These surgical procedures include lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA), vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT), vascularized lymphatic vessel transfer (VLVT) and surgical assisted lipectomy (SAL). During this workshop, participants will learn to recognize if conservative treatment has reached a plateau and surgical intervention is indicated. Participants will also learn how to modify current lymphedema treatment protocols for pre and post-surgical patients with lymphedema. Amy Little, DPT, WCS, CLT Rachel Putney, PT, DPT, OCS, CLT-LANA
