Pastor Corner-Jesus speaks of His disciples

being “witnesses of these things”—things being

His life of teaching, death and resurrection in

fulfilment of the Scriptures. That this witness

begins in Jerusalem implies movement out from

there to the whole world. Whether its physical movement, or

spiritual growth, or relational development, Baptism makes

Christians a people on the move! “We are a Pilgrim People…We

are the Church of God” as the song says!

Movement brings us to hello’s and farewell’s. This past weekend

I announced my pending July 10 farewell as pastor of Blessed

Sacrament, and hello to the next stop on my Holy Spirit led journey

of serving God and self-growth. Archbishop Jackels asked, and I

accepted, an assignment to be the Spiritual Director of the young

men considering priesthood as undergraduates at Loras College. In

that, I am to help them develop a life of prayer, an understanding of

the priesthood, and the tools for assessing their sense of God’s call

to be a priest. Also, with Fr. Dave Schatz who is the rector

(director) of the seminary program, we will be “co-pastors” of the

parishes of St. Columbkille and St. Joseph the Worker parishes. Fr.

Dave and I will live with the dozen or so young men considering

priesthood there at the seminary which is attached to the

Archdiocesan central offices at 1225 Mt. Loretta Ave. in Dubuque.

Did I mention the Archbishop also lives there, and I have to take

my turn cooking meals? We’ll see how small the table gets when

its my turn!

I hope to serve God well in this move. I know it will stretch me.

I’m excited about the growth even as I’m sad for not having a few

more years of growth through sharing life with you! Becoming a

better priest here is certainly enjoyable! But while I ask for your

prayers in this time of transition, I ask you to pray—if you don’t

already—for an openness to how and where God wants you to go

and grow! Its easy to feel our growth is to be more organic—doing

more of what I’m doing. Do we discount too easily the possible

changes that uproot us more? Do we look at our lives as witness to

these things—dying to new life?

Congratulations to our First Communicant’s, their families, and

the faith formation program staff who helped prepare them to join

us at the table of the Lord! What a privilege it is to receive Jesus!

I hope we all embrace the witness of these children dressed in their

special attire and excitement within their hearts! Receiving the

Eucharist is a BIG deal though we get to do it often. Pray for, and

cultivate the understanding that God’s generosity is not meant to

bring us to indifference and taking God for granted. Lets keep joy

in the Lord burning! Fr. Tom

Our Mission Statement

Because our hearts are burning within us, we the Community of Blessed Sacrament are disciples of Christ, witnessing the love of God through worship, service and lifelong faith formation.

Stewardship-The disciples in today’s Gospel came

to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. When

we share what we have with those who are in need,

we, too, will discover Jesus in our midst.

is the fourth Sunday of the month and our Food

Pantry Collection. Please help to replenish our

pantry with canned and boxed foods, cleaning

supplies, paper goods, and personal hygiene

products for those of our parish who are in need. Thank you for

your continued support.

Fr. Putz Legacy-Think about the people,

organizations, and charities that are the most

meaningful to you. Make sure your will is

written so your intentions are clearly spelled out.

Make sure your loved ones also know about these

intentions. We pray that you consider Blessed

Sacrament in your estate planning. If you would

Sacrament, contact Father Tom McDermott at 319-233-6179.

Parish Elections will be held on the weekend of May

12/13. We will be electing 1 person to serve on the

Pastoral Council to replace a member whose term will

expire in June and one person to the Faith Formation

Commission. All Confirmed adults who are living a

life reflective of our shared faith’s values and beliefs are eligible

to run for this office.

The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to offer counsel to, and

collaborate with, the pastor to guide the parish toward its future.

The Pastoral Council implements the Parish Mission by engaging

in pastoral visioning, which includes assessing parish needs,

identifying resources, and determining priorities. The Pastoral

Council also collaborates with the Finance Council and parish

committees in implementing the Mission of the parish.

The Waterloo Catholic Faith Formation Commission

provides counsel to the pastors for all aspects of the formal

catechetical and faith formation programs and assists in the

implementation of the policies and procedures of the Archdiocese

regarding faith formation and education (excepting the activities

of CVCS). The Commission serves as a committee to each of the

pastoral councils in the Waterloo parishes.

Please pray about how the Holy Spirit might be asking you to

put your gifts at the service of our parish’s work for the Lord in

this role for a three-year term. Nominations close on April 30th.
