FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Theme: A Supply of Hope
By any standard, the Church is wise in realizing that the flesh is weak and the atten-
tion span even weaker. It is easy for us to lose sight of the goal of the Lenten season.
We can easily despair and turn to distractions. In effect, we need a little hope to help
us keep going on. Without hope we sink into the whims of the immediate. The great
German theologian Emil Brunner said: “What oxygen is for the lungs, such is hope
for the meaning of human life. Take oxygen away and death occurs through suffoca-
tion, take hope away and humanity is constricted through lack of breath; despair su-
pervenes, spelling the paralysis of intellectual and spiritual powers by a feeling of the
senselessness and purposelessness of existence. As the fate of the human organism is
dependent on the supply of oxygen, so the fate of humanity is dependent on its supply
of hope.”
The vision of Ezekiel, the reflections of St. Paul and the raising of Lazarus provide us
with the supply of hope we need for our Lenten journey. Ezekiel likens the Jews in
the exile to the bones of the dead. There can be no true life apart from the land and
covenant provided by God. In Ezekiel’s vision, the love of God remains faithful even
though human hearts are less than faithful. God’s fidelity is not dependent on human
ways. In fact, it is God’s faithful love that empowers us to respond. He is a God of
new life and hope. Even exile and death do not have the final word. The Lord says:
“O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them… I will put my
spirit in you that you may live… I have promised, and I will do it…” We can hope in
God because he is always true to his word.

Tema: Un suministro de esperanza
Por cualquier estándar, la Iglesia es sabia al darse cuenta de que la carne es débil y la
atención aún más débil. Es fácil para nosotros perder de vista el objetivo de la tempo-
rada Cuaresma. Podemos fácilmente desesperar y acudir a las distracciones. En efec-
to, necesitamos un poco de esperanza para ayudarnos a seguir adelante. Sin esperanza
nos hundimos en los caprichos de lo inmediato. El gran teólogo alemán Emil Brunner
dijo: "Lo que el oxígeno es para los pulmones, tal es la esperanza para el significado
de la vida humana. Quiten el oxígeno y la muerte se produce por asfixia, alejen la
esperanza y la humanidad se contrae a causa de la falta de aire; La desesperación so-
breviene, deletreando la parálisis de los poderes intelectuales y espirituales por un
sentimiento de la insensatez y la falta de propósito de la existencia. Como el destino
del organismo humano depende del suministro de oxígeno, el destino de la humani-
dad depende de su fuente de esperanza ."
La visión de Ezequiel, las reflexiones de San Pablo y la resurrección de Lázaro nos
proporcionan la fuente de esperanza que necesitamos para nuestro viaje de Cuaresma.
Ezequiel compara a los judíos en el exilio con los huesos de los muertos. No puede
haber vida verdadera aparte de la tierra y del pacto proporcionados por Dios. En la
visión de Ezequiel, el amor de Dios permanece fiel a pesar de que los corazones
humanos son menos que fieles. La fidelidad de Dios no depende de los caminos
humanos. De hecho, es el amor fiel de Dios el que nos da poder para responder. Él es
un Dios de nueva vida y esperanza. Incluso el exilio y la muerte no tienen la última
palabra. El Señor dice: "Oh pueblo mío, abriré vuestras tumbas y les haré resucitar de
ellas ... pondré mi espíritu en vosotros para que viváis ... Yo he prometido y lo

Adults: Participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA). Infants to age 5: Parents and Godparents participate in Baptism program. Children (Grades 1-12): Participate in Religious Education Program. Please make an appointment to discuss preparation for the sacraments.

QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR (Continuación de la pág. 1)
Tema:¿Cuál es la esperanza de esta temporada cuaresmal? San
Pablo capta la esencia de esto diciendo que Dios que resucitó a
Jesús "traerá sus cuerpos mortales a la vida también a través de su
Espíritu que mora en ustedes". Esta es nuestra esperanza para la
Cuaresma, para la Pascua, para toda nuestra vida. Vivimos cada
día en la esperanza de que el mismo Espíritu que levantó a Jesús
estará trabajando en nosotros. A través del bautismo tenemos esta
esperanza de gloria. Al morir con Jesús diariamente al pecado y
al egoísmo, tenemos la verdadera esperanza de vivir una vida
nueva en el tiempo y en la eternidad.
La lectura del evangelio de Juan presenta el último de los siete
signos de Jesús: el resucitar de Lázaro. Las palabras de Jesús son
tan cruciales (si no más) que el signo mismo: "Yo soy la resurrec-
ción y la vida: todo aquel que me cree, aunque muera, volverá a
la vida; y el que está vivo y cree en mí Nunca morir ". Estamos
vivos, al menos biológicamente. ¿Creemos en Jesús como la resu-
rrección y la vida? No por nuestras palabras y observancias exte-
riores, sino por abrir diariamente nuestros corazones para recibir
el Espíritu?
Cada día Jesús nos dice lo que dijo a Lázaro: "¡Salid!" Jesús nos
llama a salir de la tumba y el pecado con su gran roca de miedo
que bloquea la entrada del Espíritu. Cada día Jesús nos invita a
vivir una nueva forma, a vivir sólo para nosotros mismos, pero
para Dios y los demás. Jesús quiere separarnos de las envolturas
del pecado para que podamos vivir libres.
La palabra hoy es esperanza. La esperanza en Jesús no es un es-
cape sin sentido de ese dolor de la vida cotidiana. Más bien, la
esperanza cristiana es una virtud que nos da el coraje de vivir
cada día en la plenitud del Espíritu que levantó a Jesús y nos ele-
vará a cada uno de nosotros.

Theme: What is the hope of this Lenten season? St. Paul
captures the essence of it by saying that God who raised Je-
sus “will bring your mortal bodies to life also through his
Spirit dwelling in you.” This is our hope for Lent, for Easter,
for our entire life. We live each day in the hope that the same
Spirit that raised Jesus will be at work in us. Through bap-
tism we have this hope of glory. By dying with Jesus daily to
sin and selfishness, we have the real hope of living a new life
in time and in eternity.
The gospel reading from John presents the last of Jesus’
seven signs: the raising of Lazarus. The words of Jesus are as
crucial (if not more so) than the sign itself: “I am the resur-
rection and the life: whoever believes me, though he should
die, will come to life: and whoever is alive and believes in
me will never die.” We are alive, at least biologically. Do we
believe in Jesus as the resurrection and the life? Not by our
words and outward observances, but by daily opening our
hearts to receive the Spirit?
Each day Jesus says to us what he said to Lazarus: “Come
out!” Jesus calls us to come out from the tomb and sin with
its large boulder of fear blocking the entrance of the Spirit.
Each day Jesus invites us to live a new way, to live out only
for ourselves but for God and others. Jesus wants to unbind
us from the wrappings of sin so that we can live free.
The word today is hope. Hope in Jesus is not a mindless es-
cape from that pain of everyday life. Rather, Christian hope
is a virtue which gives us the courage to live each day in the

CRUZ DE ORO PARA LA EDUCACIÓN
Únase a nosotros en oración y celebración mientras honra-

Those who would like to make a donation or offer a Memorial plant to deco-rate our sanctuary and church at Easter and during the Easter sea-son may place this envelope in the collection basket.
