Mission Statement Our Lady of Good

Counsel Parish Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed

to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart.

We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist.

As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship

and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellow-ship, and service. With diligence, compassion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by

the Holy Spirit.

October 11, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners, The readings this week are a food-lover’s dream in that the first reading and the Gospel both center on grand banquets. In the Gospel Jesus tells us the Parable of the Marriage Feast. The host has prepared a delightful banquet saying “Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” But the people are too busy and don’t want to come. The first reading is from Isaiah and might sound familiar to you because it is often heard at funerals. Once again a delightful banquet is prepared and we are invit-ed to a mountaintop retreat to partake with the words “On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.” Of course both banquets are allegories for the eschatological banquet, or life in heaven. Even with Heaven in the balance, some refuse the invitation. But for those who say yes, the Eucharist itself becomes the foretaste of the eschatological banquet, a preview of Heaven. Many of us can say something like “we grew up poor, but we didn’t know it.” Usually this is because of how our par-ents and grandparents managed to pull together dinners out of thin air. “She could feed an army with a hambone” are the kind of things said about these people. My own Grandmother would say “There’s always enough” and throw anoth-er handful of rice in the pot to feed some extras that happened upon the house at dinner time. Our greatest holidays and celebrations are often enjoyed around a dinner table. Thanksgiving, Christmas Dinner, birthday cake, are words that elicit a mouth-watering response to anyone who grew up in a house that had someone with the courage to venture into the kitchen to produce. I am reminded of one of my sisters who has the tradition of letting her children pick out what-ever they want for their birthday dinner. Once my nephew surprised her by asking for Hamburger Helper, something she had never made at home. When she asked why he said he liked the commercial. I think she made him Shepherd’s Pie. I was fortunate to grow up in a house with excellent cooks. One of my favorite memories is when my mother would cook a roast of pork. Back in those days there was at least an inch of fat on a roast, and that was if you bought the low-fat one, and while it would cook away in the oven the smells would be intoxicating and no music ever sounded as sweet at the sound of fat exploding and sizzling in the oven. I would sit by the oven and listen to it. I grew up with a love for food, and if you told me I was poor I wouldn’t have believed you. I didn’t realize at the time that God was teaching me something about the eschatological banquet of Heaven, but when I hear Isaiah’s reading for this weekend I can still smell my Mom’s roast pork… and, you guessed it, I’m in heaven! The joy of sharing a meal is but a foretaste of the joy we will experience in Heaven. Jesus so wants us to understand this… that union with Him is the pathway to happiness and peace in this life and in the life to come. He established the Mass as the Perpetual Memorial of His Death and Resurrection, and entering into Communion with Him at Mass by receiving His Body and Blood is partaking in the greatest banquet of all. But still, many, though invited, do not come. God has invited you to the banquet of love that He has prepared for you. Be sure to accept the invitation, take your seat at the table, and savor the banquet of the Lord!

God Bless, Fr. Chris

Your generosity and prayers will assist the Holy Father and

the various missionary efforts at home and abroad.

“We want to thank the many parishioners who have been faithful in dropping off their offertory envelopes

and Grand Annual donations to the parish office. Your faithfulness during these times when so many

are avoiding crowds and not yet ready to attend Mass is very much appreciated!

The best place to leave envelopes is by dropping them in the front door mail slot. This way they are

safe in the house and out of the elements. Again, thank you!”

A Note From Fr. Chris . . . “A word about Daily Mass. When we were able to return to Sunday Mass there was much joy and hope that we would be making progress in fully opening and returning to life as we know it and love it. The virus has stuck around though, and we still need to take precautions to avoid the spread. When we opened up for Sunday Mass I thought it wise to hold off still on Daily Mass. This is partly because of the cleaning and sanitizing requirements which require volunteers and supplies, but also if we have in-person Daily Mass for many that would mean being in a group setting six times a week instead of one. It seemed prudent to avoid that and to con-tinue to offer the Daily Mass from the parish via live-streaming only. As this pandemic drags on I have reviewed this position frequently. I still think the wisest course is to continue Daily Mass via live-streaming only at this time. I know some people disagree. I hope our situation will allow us to return to our regular schedule, but we are now seeing Methuen and Lawrence in the “Red Zone” with an increase in positive cases. At every Mass I pray for an end to the virus. What else can we do other than pray and take precautions. Please join me in praying and in taking care to re-main healthy and virus free. It has been a long haul, and I, like you I’m sure, long for this all to be behind us.” Thank you for your patience, and your prayers!”

"October" by Robert Frost, 1913

O hushed October morning mild, Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;

Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild, Should waste them all.

The crows above the forest call; Tomorrow they may form and go. O hushed October morning mild, Begin the hours of this day slow.

Make the day seem to us less brief. Hearts not averse to being beguiled,

Beguile us in the way you know. Release one leaf at break of day;

At noon release another leaf; One from our trees, one far away. Retard the sun with gentle mist; Enchant the land with amethyst.

Slow, slow! For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,

Whose leaves already are burnt with frost, Whose clustered fruit must else be lost—

For the grapes’ sake along the wall.
