I am very much looking forward to being with our SummerWest students and faculty mem- bers everyday for one or both of our sessions, and I hope you are looking forward to the opportunities to study, learn, research, write, exchange ideas, and experience a prayerful, supportive, and enjoyable community lifestyle in June and/or July here at the University of San Francisco. We have much to anticipate this year for SummerWest. My col- leagues Doreen Jones and Gini Shimabukuro will be teaching once again; Doreen will teach Intro to Doctoral Research during Session I and Moral Development in Session II, while Gini will be offering Spirituality of the Educator in our second session. Dear Members of the ICEL Community,

As we anticipate Easter and celebrate new life, I also anticipate some-thing in my new life as the director of the Institute for Catholic Edu-cational Leadership: my first SummerWest. I am very much looking forward to being with our SummerWest students and faculty mem-bers everyday for one or both of our sessions, and I hope you are looking forward to the opportunities to study, learn, research, write, exchange ideas, and experience a prayerful, supportive, and enjoyable community lifestyle in June and/or July here at the University of San Francisco.

We have much to anticipate this year for SummerWest. My col-leagues Doreen Jones and Gini Shimabukuro will be teaching once again; Doreen will teach Intro to Doctoral Research during Session I and Moral Development in Session II, while Gini will be offering Spirituality of the Educator in our second session. ICEL alum James Everitt, who serves as principal of Sacred Heart Preparatory School in Ather-ton, will teach Catholic Leadership and Educational Administration during the first session. Financial Management and Mission Workshop

On Saturday, March 31, over forty Bay Area Catholic school principals, presidents, business managers, diocesan officials and others gathered at the Fromm Center at USF for a workshop sponsored by the Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership. “Financial Management and Mission” aimed to provide support and information on the financial reporting and monitoring Catholic schools are required to exercise as stewards of institutional resources.

The presenter, Susan Conniff, is a CPA with a UCLA MBA and much ex-perience. For many years, Ms. Conniff

was the Vice President for Finance at Loyola School in New York City, where she worked with ICEL director Fr. Steve Katsouros, S.J. She is currently financial consultant for the School of the Holy Child in Rye, New

York, and serves on the finance committee of the Xavier High School board of trus-tees in Manhattan. “I want to make this as practical and implementable as possible,” Ms. Conniff stated at the beginning of the daylong work-shop.

From all accounts, Ms. Conniff was successful in achieving her goal. “This is just what ICEL should be doing,” commented workshop par-ticipant Lars Lund, the president of Serra High School in San Mateo. “This so relevant, so central to all of our jobs.” Annette Brown, Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Finance at the Archdiocese of San Francisco Department of Catholic Schools, agreed. “Our principals need this level of training and discussion as they navigate their schools through all of the complicated financial matters they encounter.”

The workshop is consistent with Fr. Katsouros’s vision for ICEL as a center where administrators can engage in high-level discussions on matters pertinent for their leadership and success. “ICEL now requires our Business and Finance class as part of our degree programs,” he said. “Previously, it was an elective, but, as any administrator knows, business and finance are not extracurriculars.”

Ms. Conniff was impressed with the commitment the participants evidenced during workshop discussions. “It’s clear these professionals are dedicated to serving their constituents as effectively as possible,”

she observed. As she led discussions on the evolution of the school business office, accountability, transparency, three-to-five year financial forecasting, capital budgeting, and “telling your school’s story to the broader community,” she contributed to increasing participants’ effectiveness.

Director’s Message Continued from page 1

No, I didn’t invite only New Yorkers to join me during my first non-New York summer! Dominican Brother Edward van Merrienboer of Missouri returns to SummerWest in July to present Bullying: A Social Perspective, addressing a topic that is growing a concern for anyone in education. Jesuit Frank Turner is offering a series of four lectures at USF’s Lane Center in July on Religious Ethics in the Global Discourse, which SummerWest students can register for as a Special Topic. Off campus at the Westin St. Francis Hotel on Union Square, I will be offering Making Decisions to Sustain Your Mission, a conference for trustees serving on the boards of Catholic colleges, universities, and high schools.

Much to anticipate, indeed! I encourage you to anticipate what your summer looks like, and consider taking a course. Also, encourage a colleague, an emerging leader on your faculty, an administrator who needs a degree or a credential, to anticipate their summer calendars and to experience SummerWest and enroll in ICEL. Speaking of anticipating, I look forward to seeing many of you in Boston at NCEA. Look for the ICEL booth, look for our terrific program assistant Emily Johnson, and stop by at our reunion on Wednesday evening of the convention. For now, know that I will remember your ministries and you during the liturgies of Holy Week.

Happy Easter,

Steve Katsouros, S.J.

News & Notes

WHITE SMOKE!

The Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership has another Jesuit! ICEL director Fr. Steve Katsouros, SJ, announced that the Jesuits have assigned Fr. Ralph Metts, SJ, to join the ICEL faculty, beginning in August 2012.

Fr. Metts, a member of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, re-ceived a BA in English from Fordham University, an MA in English from the University of Scranton, an M.Ed. in Learning and Reading Disabilities from Columbia University and an Ed.D in Special Education: Learning Disabilities from Columbia University. Fr. Metts served the Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA) for twenty-two years, first as vice president and then as president. The JSEA offers planning, training, and consulting services for the 56 member schools. He has also served on the board of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).

Before his service to JSEA, Fr. Metts worked as learning specialist for the five Maryland Province Jesuit high schools. He is the author of Learning or Not, a collec-tion of techniques for working with students with special learning needs, along with other works focusing on Jesuit pedagogy.

USF president Fr. Steve Privett commented, “Ralph’s extensive experience is quite significant for ICEL.” Fr. Katsouros has asked Fr. Metts to create an elective on Catholic schools accommodating the needs of students with learning differences; teach other ICEL core courses and electives; serve on dissertation committees; assist in managing ICEL conferences and workshops; and contribute to the development of ICEL as a center for Catholic educa-tional governance research and support. “I know Ralph will make an important contribution to the Institute and be a high impact player,” Fr. Katsouros said.

Fr. Ralph Metts, S.J. will join the

ICEL faculty in August.

Gini Shimabukuro, Ed.D. and Marcy Fox, Ed.D. to present at NCEA 2012

Shimabukuro and Fox will deliver a presentation titled: “Processes to Enhance the Catholic Identity of Your School.” The workshop will introduce participants to a model of Catholic identity. Participants will engage in a modified process designed to assess the Catholic identity of their school. This ses-sion will provide interactive, experiential exercises that may be transferable to participants' school communities.

Shimabukuro and Fox will also release a follow-up volume to their 2010 release, Building a Spiritual Community Among Faculty,

Staff Development Processes for Educators in Catholic Schools (NCEA, 2010). Their new volume, Building a Spiritual Community Among Educators, Processes to Explore the Catholic Identity of Your School , will be released and available at the convention.
