Dear Parents: MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) testing started recently, and will continue through May. Students in grades 3-8 take computer- based tests in English/Language Arts and Math. Students in grades 5 and 8 take paper-based tests in Science/Technology Engineering. Tisbury School students have historically performed very well on these tests. This success is due to the students’ hard work, teachers’ preparation, and the support of the school community. Later this month (April 26 and 27 and May 1), parent-teacher conferences will be held. Please sign up to meet with your child’s teacher(s). These meetings offer important opportunities to discuss progress made this year, as well as learning goals for the following year. Class rosters for grades 1-4 will be completed over the summer, and communicated to parents in early August. Move-up Day, on June 2, will have students visit both classrooms of the grade they will be in the following year. Tisbury’s Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm in the school gymnasium. Annually, the school site budget is presented to the voters. Tisbury has been very supportive of education and providing meaningful opportunities for children, and we should be grateful for this. While no related Warrant Articles will come before voters this year, Town Meeting will provide an opportunity for the School Committee to share with voters about the progress of the building project. Our partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority presents an amazing opportunity for the Town of Tisbury, and it is exciting to be part of this work. Following April vacation, it seems as if the days and weeks move more quickly, leading to June and summer vacation. Please be sure to look at schedules and calendars, and to ask your child about all that is happening at school. Sincerely, John Custer April 2017 Tisbury School Art Show Reception The colorful artwork of Tisbury School students will be on display for an Art Show Opening held at the Chilmark Branch of Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank on Thursday, April 13, 2017, 4PM to 5:00PM. ART NEWSFor the past few weeks in Art, K-4th grades have been drawing and painting self- portraits. Students are given demonstrations with formulas on creating correct facial proportions. After instruction they apply these techniques attempting to portray themselves. They all did a fantastic job!

Sixth grade students are designing, and then forming ceramic mugs out of clay by use of slab construction.

Seventh graders worked in groups on decoupage and assemblage techniques with photos from their Marine Hospital field trip this past fall, with Ann DuCharme from MV Museum. There is a chance these works could be chosen for an art exhibit at the current museum in Edgartown!

Eighth graders are creating movement with line and adding to color.

Berklee College of Music African Club Visit 7th & 8th Grade

On March 15th, Jason Sibi-Okumu, alumni of the Berklee College of Music African Club was joined by Sagit Zilberman and Allegra Cramer, to visit the Tisbury School 7th and 8th graders. Jason, Allegra, and Sagi visited all the elementary schools to do workshops presenting songs from various countries. On March 16th, they were at the high school working with 7th and 8th grade singers and members of the MVRHS Chorus, Vocal Ensemble, and Minnesingers. These workshops culminated into performances at the All Island Choral Festival at the MVRHS Performing Arts Center. Jason, Allegra, and Sagit incorporated instrumental and vocal accompaniment. They played a variety of instruments including the hang drum and harp. The Island vocal music teachers were very pleased to have these amazing young musicians visit our schools. Special thanks was given to Roberta Kirn for her invaluable assistance in making it possible.

Self-Portrait by Lilah York, Grade 2

Third Grade Visit the MV Film Festival! On Friday, March 17th, Ms. Shirley's third grade class was fortunate enough to participate the children's workshop at the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival. Only a handful of classes across the island were able to attend. It was an incredible opportunity! Students watched two animated shorts while sprawled out on the coveted white couches. Then they rotated through various hands-on stations, learning different film making techniques. Using costumes and backgrounds, students created fantastic still shots against a green screen. There were many clowns in outer space and even one chicken on the beach! Using ipads and stick puppets they made themselves, they created stop animation shorts by slowly moving the characters across the screen and taking hundreds of pictures. The third graders also put their interviewing skills to use. In a completely student-led production, the students worked the video camera and sound equipment while they took turn interviewing each other. Ms. Shirley's class had a blast and learned a lot about the art of film making. We just might have some future directors and performers at Tisbury School!

These workshops were hosted and run by Cinema Circus, part of the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival, as part of a STEAM collaboration. Each stations was completely student driven and hands-on, blending art and technology with problem solving skills.

LIBRARY NEWSDuring their library time, first graders recently created movies inspired by Mo Willems' book, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. They brainstormed for ideas, and then each student chose a part. Students then drew their part using iPads. Students recorded their voices, and the whole thing was put together for a movie.

View the finished product by going to the Tisbury School webpage, clicking on Media Center, and then finding the movies under 1st Grade. First graders enjoyed using technology to respond to this story in a new way.

Salad Roll Ups

8 large lettuce leaves, washed and dried2 oz. rice noodles, cooked8 oz. shiitake mushroomsthinly sliced, cookedand cooled1-2 carrots, grated(approx 3/4 cup)1/4 pound cookedchopped chicken, shrimp or tofuBean sproutsMint leaves, chives, cilantro

Lay out your lettuce leaf. Top the leaf with a pinch of cooked noodles, a few pieces of cooked mushrooms, follow with a pinch of the grated carrot, a pinch of your protein of choice, a pinch of bean sprouts and finish with the fresh herbs. You don’t want to overfill your lettuce leaf or it will be difficult to roll. Roll up egg roll style, cut the stem of the leaf if it impedes rolling. Continue with remaining lettuce leaves and fillings.
