Alumnus HighlightDr. Kimberly Han,

PharmD, Class of 2016

The start of the school year is a great way for organizations to recruit new members and find ways to collaborate with one an-other. This provides students with an opportunity to get involved and give back to the communi-ty. During my first year of phar-macy school, I took the time to learn about the various organi-zations, including their goals and

objectives for the year. How-ever, I was still lost with

little direction as to what I was

truly

passionate about. This changed the moment I attended a Student Na-tional Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA)meet-ing. During the meeting, there was a speaker that immediately caught my attention. Her passion and enthusiasm was apparent

across the room and I was enticed by

achieve so much in a matter of two years. This individual was Kimberly Han, a third year phar-macy student. Although she was just a member of the organiza-tion, she was heavily involved in multiple projects spearheaded by the organization. Her dedication and perseverance helped SNPhA achieve Chapter of the Year—the highest recognition awarded to one school per academic year. Dr. Han concluded the presen-tation with a video she created, which was awarded first place for the Rite Aid Scholarship at the 2014 SNPhA National Conference in Arlington, VA. I was inspired to follow in her footsteps and ensure my student career was just as impactful. Dr. Han’s accomplishments did not end there, as it was only the tip of the iceberg in regards to what she has achieved during her student career. During her first year, she was involved with CNU’s

Student Body Council and at-tended multiple confer-

ences, where she served as a

Pharmacy Optimization Series, a three-part workshop aimed at help-ing students pave a desirable career path. Through the series, she has shared her experiences and encour-aged students to get involved. In my opinion, her desire to give back to students as well as the pharmacy profession is a personal trait that is an inspiration to all. Dr. Han’s persever-ance is one of her strongest attri-butes. Thus far at CNUCOP, she is one of the few students to complete all eight APPE rotations (only six are re-quired for 4th year students). As I’ve gotten to know Dr. Han, I have expe-rienced first handedly her dedication to mentor students and give back to the community. She has continuously helped students with their profession-al development and is known as the CV guru. It is without a doubt that she is willing to help any student with a positive and charismatic attitude. Thank you so much for your consistent support and providing us with a goal to strive towards.

delegate. Dr. Han was also one of the few students that received the Executive Intern Pharmacist position at Target, which she completed in her hometown in Southern Califor-nia. As a second year student, she was President of the Acade-my of Managed Care Pharmacy and successfully competed in the clinical skills competition, where she went on to represent our school at the national con-ference. She continued the Ad-vanced Executive Internship with Target that following summer. Through her vast experi-ences and accomplishments, she went into the American Society of Health-Systems Phar-macy (ASHP) Midyear confer-ence without any fear in site. After countless interviews off-site and on-site, she decided to pur-sue a Post-Graduate Year One Residency in Managed Care at Envolve Pharmacy Solutions. Although her residency schedule is demanding, she continues to make time to mentor students. In particular, she initiated the

CNUCOP students and faculty join the community effort to promote education and en-hance diabetes awareness during a Diabetes Community Outreach Health Fair event held at the Concord Senior Center in Concord, California. The event strived to develop a sense of community and was chaired by our very own CNU-COP Faculty Dr. Welly Mente, PharmD, FCSHP Chair Diablo Chapter of the California So-

ciety of Health System Phar-macists (DSHP) Diabetes Com-munity Outreach Health Fair. Colleges of pharmacy, stu-dents, academia faculty, phar-macists, dental, optometry, audiology, physical therapy, medical, nursing, pharmaceu-tical industry companies, and the local community came together during National Dia-betes Awareness month in No-vember to volunteer their time and resources for this event.

There was wonderful collabo-ration with pharmacy students from Touro, CNUCOP, and UOP. It was wonderful to be able to see the pharmacists and phar-macy students at this health fair event display a high level of professionalism and commit-ment in their volunteer services to the community. The purpose of this event was to increase diabetes awareness and pro-vide education to our commu-nity, many of which represent

underserved patients in Contra Costa County. Although un-derserved patients have some access to free healthcare, it is beneficial for them to receive diabetes specific education to realize what diabetes is, to know what the healthcare consequences of this prevalent disease are, and learn what they can do to help prevent or delay this disease.During the event, there were health screenings for blood glu-

cose, blood pressure, dental, hearing, eye screenings, and more. Additional services in-cluded physical therapy, smok-ing cessation education, dental presentation, presentations pro-vided by an endocrinologist, a celebrity chef cooking demon-stration, a Tai Chi instructor, and diabetes education from a cer-tified diabetes educator. Pa-tients were able to learn how to manage or prevent the devel-opment of diabetes by eating

healthy, exercising, and know-ing their numbers. Patients also had the opportunity to have their medications reviewed by a pharmacist upon bringing in their medications or medication list. Raffle prizes were awarded and all of this was done for no charge to the community. This event was open to individuals with diabetes, family members, friends, and who people who simply wanted to know more.

“It’s encouraging to see our pharmacy colleagues

in northern California at their very best. It was a wonderful day for our

pharmacy profession to volunteer their time and

resources to give back to the community”
