FROM FATHER CHUCK Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations, also commonly called Good Shepherd Sunday. The two titles go hand in hand. In Church language, a vocation is a calling from God to a particular ministry or work or way of life. As Jesus notes in today’s Gospel, “I know mine and mine know me.” The sheep learn and heed the shepherd’s voice. When considering what is a “vocation”, many in the Church think first of priests or nuns, perhaps because the word has most often been identified with that calling. But every baptized person in the community ought to discern what is her or his vocation. We are all called to respond to the Good Shepherd. That call may be to marriage or to single life. It may be to consecrated life in community, such as a sister or brother or priest might live. It may be as a diocesan priest, like Fr. Lucio and myself. We pray for vocations to all these faithful ways of life. Lots of people choose to marry & many choose to remain single. However, they are not all respond-ing to a calling from God. The prayer we make today strives to heighten awareness among all Catholics, indeed among all Christians, that God calls each of us to a lived discipleship, to express the Good News, the Gospel, in our daily lives, to show by the choices we make that we do know and follow the Lord, Je-sus Christ, our Shepherd. The married couple living out their vocation is a witness of the love of Jesus Christ, first to each other, and then to their family and to the whole world. The vocation of marriage is not a private matter. Like all vocations, it is lived outwardly in the world. Similarly, a disciple of Christ who hears the call to be single, does not just live for her/himself but lives a life of service to the Gospel. Another vocation we see in the Church is commonly referred to as “lay religious” or “third order.” These people typically do not live in community, and they work in the world but make vows to live ac-cording to a religious rule of life. For example, I’m aware in our diocese that we have active Franciscan, Carmelite and Dominican third order communities. The latter is based in our parish. We currently have four men in the seminary discerning their vocation to diocesan priesthood. On this day let us especially pray for them. If you’d like to drop them a note this week to tell them you are pray-ing for them, that would be appreciated, I’m sure. I remember receiving notes like that from time to time when I was in the seminary and it was always a happy reminder that people “back home” were lifting me up and, in a sense, journeying with me. Later in this bulletin you will find our seminarians’ photos and contact information. If you or someone you know is interested in priesthood or religious life, please con-tact Fr. Lucio or me. Vocation is also used in a broader way to talk about not only a way of life but a ministry within the parish, such as lector, greeter, extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, cantor, musician, server, altar care, teacher, coordinator of outreach to the poor or the needy, bereavement support and the list can go on and on. These may be sort of “mini” vocations in that one’s whole life may not be devoted to it but, in Christian charity and discipleship, it is a public way to support others on their journey of faith.
As our larger community begins to open up in the lessening days of COVID 19, and our diocese and parish cautiously does the same, I want to call back all those who have been involved in these various ministries in the parish to return to their work and I want to encourage those who may not be involved to consider these vocations as well. You may be noticing from week to week that many of the same people are involved in the liturgical ministries. With more people returning to the pews, that should not be the case. Please do consider what the Lord may be calling you to do. We need your help!
I have been working on the formation of a Legacy Council for the Cathedral parish. This is com-prised of faithful people who are involved in some manner of estate work who are willing to be in an ad-visory role to parishioners about planning their estates and end of life transitions. This is a huge area that involves more than just a will or who is going to get your property. It is about giving prayerful con-sideration regarding what and whom the Lord has given you in your life and how you want to care for and acknowledge what is important to you when you no longer can do it yourself. A “legacy” speaks about what I leave behind to, in some manner, support and continue the work entrusted to me. This also includes plans for guardianship of minor children or adults who become incapacitated. On Monday, May 10 at 5:30 PM, the Legacy Council will be sponsoring a basic seminar on some of these issues to begin, or perhaps continue, considerations and conversations in this regard. Sharon Januzzi, an attorney and member of our parish, will be our primary presenter. Over the next two weekends members of the coun-cil will be available after mass to register interested people for the seminar. I encourage you to partici-pate in this free seminar to help evaluate what plan you have now and to prayerfully take steps to further develop that plan. This is an important part of being a good steward of all that the Lord has given us, including our lives. For planning purposes, registration is required.
BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL THIS FOURTH WEEK OF EASTER!
