Part 2: Installing the Gimble Waterproof Housing

New Sound System For Summer

The Cruiser is done and it's a good thing. Don't get me wrong, there's always some-thing to add and I'm sure I'll

find an excuse to add an acces-sory or two on it.

In the last issue of Texas Auto Guide, I wrote about how I installed waterproof speakers to the doors of my ‘65 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. In this issue, I’ll explain what it took to get the housing and headunit installed.

If you remember, I received a Pyle marine AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo system complete with waterproof speakers for my birthday last year.

After I cut the holes and in-stalled the 5.5” speakers it was time to tackle the electronics part of this task.

Since my Cruiser didn’t have a radio when it was made, there wasn’t a place to attach the headunit to the dash. My only choice was to get a Gimble Waterproof Housing box for the stereo in order to keep it from getting wet.

These Gimble boxes are really pretty cool. I purchased the Pyle version online to make sure it was compatible with my headunit.

When I got my Cruiser someone had tried to mount something under the dash. I’m not sure what it was but they left two mounting brackets attached to the underside of the dash. I took those mounting brackets off and fitted the holes to the box to the underside of the dash with a few bolts.

Next, I connected the speaker wires to the coordinating wires coming out the back of the headunit through the Gimble Box. Last, I hooked up the hot wire to the fuse box and mounted the ground to a bolt on the underside of the dash

There was one wire left but I didn’t use it. I don’t have an an-tenna mounted to the Cruiser because it didn’t come with a radio so I left that one undone. Maybe one day I’ll get to that.

Now, I have a great sounding radio that is permanently at-tached to my Cruiser that can play my favorite tunes. Mission accomplished.
