March Newsletter 2017
April 2017 Winger School Newsletter
From the Office of the Principal, Mr. C. McInnis….
Well, April has finally arrived and we have a busy month
coming up. Welcome to Mrs. McCumber who will be our
2/3 teacher until the end of the year and be a permanent
part of our Winger Staff. Our Grade 3 students have taken
part in the “Swim to Survive” program at the YMCA in
Welland. A reminder that there is no school on Good Fri-
day (April 14th) and Easter Monday (April 17th). Finally,
our main focus continues to be Math. As a result of our
EQAO mid-year assessments the teachers of Grade 3 and 6
have set individual “next steps and goals” for each of their
students to hopefully improve their results on the official
assessment in May/June. Additionally, all staff members
are following the similar plan to improve each and every
student. Looking forward to seeing everyone out at Pasta
night on the 7th and additionally excited about the vendor
fair on May 4th . .
Mr. C. McInnis, Principal

APRIL NEWS FROM GRADE 4 / 5
In literacy the Grade 4 /5 students have been presenting their public service announcements each
day on morning announcements and have completed posters for our media message bulletin board
on ways to conserve energy. We have been exploring an old writing tool, the dictionary, and practic-
ing alphabetical order and learning how to use the guide words on the page to help find words. We
have also been exploring a new writing tool, chrome book computers, and we have had a workshop
on how to use google read and write. April is poetry month and we will be reading, interpreting and
writing various forms of poetry.
In math, students have been conducting surveys, collecting and organizing data and displaying it in
a variety of graph forms. It has been fun to look at the results when we surveyed other classes. We
continue to work on fraction concepts using pattern blocks to represent improper fractions and mixed
numbers as well as basic number sense skills in our daily bell work. Our next step in math will be a
geometry focus, using grid coordinates and the cardinal directions to identify and describe the loca-
tion of an object on a grid map which ties in well with our map work in Social Studies. We will also
explore reflections and translations (flips and slides).
In Science, we explored forms of renewable energy (wind, water, solar) and enjoyed making cereal
box windmills and using wind energy to lift paperclips. We are still waiting for enough sun to cook a
marshmellow using a homemade solar cooker! Stay tuned for information on our next experiments
on finding the best insulator and construction of our “eco houses”.
We have many exciting upcoming field trips. The first is April 20th trip to Port Colborne High School
for Grade 4 day. This is a free trip and lunch is provided. On May 24th we have a trip to E. L. Crossley
for Grade 4 day. This is a free trip and lunch is provided. The purpose of these trips is for students in
3 /4 , 4, and 4 /5 classes to meet students from other feeder schools, participate in team building ac-
tivities and see the high schools. Many students in our class are members of the Winger School Choir
and will be travelling to Port Colborne on May 3rd to participate in the Port Colborne Festival of the
Arts. Our big junior division year end trip is to Medieval Times in Toronto on June 15th. Students have
the opportunity to sell Easter/Spring Kalanchoes to help offset the cost of their trip. Orders forms
have been sent home.
Have a happy Easter!
