Concerning Tonight’s Liturgy

La ilustración en la portada de este boletín, Wash-ing Feet, proviene del artista chino He Qi. Ac-tualmente, residente de California, estudió en la Universidad Normal de Nanjing, el Instituto de Arte de Nanjing en China y el Instituto de Arte de Hamburgo en Alemania. Actualmente, actualmen-te es Artista en Residencia en el Seminario Teo-lógico Fuller y Profesor Visitante Distinguido en el Instituto de Arte de RUC (Renmin University de China, Beijing).

The artwork on the cover of this bulletin, Washing Feet, comes from the Chinese artist He Qi. Cur-rently a California resident, He Qi Studied at Nan-jing Normal University, Nanjing Art Institute in China and Hamburg Art Institute in Germany. Now He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Art Institute of RUC (Renmin University of China, Beijing).

Viniendo del Mandatum Novum latino, o “Nuevo Mandamiento,” la palabra Maundy se refiere al mandamiento que Jesús le dio a sus discípulos: “Amaos los unos a los otros como yo os he amado.’ En este servicio, el mandamiento de Cris-to es decretado por la Ley de Lavado de los Pie. Coming from the Latin Mandatum Novum, or “New Commandment,” the word Maundy refers to the commandment Jesus gave to his disciples: “Love one another as I have loved you.” At this service, Christ’s commandment is enacted by the Foot-Washing. After an invitation from the Presider, you may come forward to have your feet washed by the clergy. We encourage you to take part in this beautiful ritual.

After the Foot-Washing, we proceed with the cele-bration of the Eucharist. Every Sunday, we hear the Words of Institution during the Eucharistic Prayer. They begin: “On the night he was handed over to death and suffering, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread....” The familiar words take on a poign-ant urgency and reorient us to the central mystery of our faith.

The service concludes with the stripping of the altar as an act of preparation for Good Friday.

Fellow servants of our Lord Jesus Christ: On the night before his death, Jesus set an example for his disciples for washing their feet, an act of humble service. He taught that strength and growth in the life of the Kingdom of God come not by power, authority, or even miracle, but by such lowly service. We all need to re-member his example, but none stand more in need of this reminder than those whom the Lord has called to the ordained ministry.

Therefore, I invite you who share in the royal priesthood of Christ, to come for-ward, that we may recall whose servants we are by following the example of our Master. But come remembering his ad-monishment that what will be done for
