Micky Payton is a certified Early Childhood Educator with a passion for helping kids explore art through movement, sensory experience, and exposure to literature. In this class your child will experiment with a variety of art mediums and discover how fun art can be.

Your child will have an opportunity to expand their artistic talents during this six-week program. A variety of art mediums will be explored including painting, drawing, and collage. This class is designed for older students who have some experience with clay. Andrea will be reviewing the basics of hand built pottery and teaching basic techniques on the wheel. Students will create and take home between three and five projects.

This class is designed for students who have an interest in origami and paper airplanes. Dawn will be teaching the basics of paper folding. Students will learn a range of skills from choosing the correct paper, to building a world-record holding paper airplane.

This is an introduction to ballet class for children ages 6-10. This class will instruct students in basic ballet positions, with an emphasis placed on developing coordination and musicality. (A familiarity with basic ballet steps is a great foundation for young dancers, as many types of dance draw from ballet techniques.)

This is an introduction to tap class for children ages 3-5. This class will focus on basic tap steps and techniques as well as simple step combinations. Tap is an energetic dance that your child will love.

This class will focus on the foundations of hip-hop style and movement. Students will learn step combinations that teach fundamental techniques and improve their control, strength, and musicality. It is a very energetic class that students can have fun with.

Dance is an excellent medium for empowering young people. Through dance,teens build self-confidence as well as physical and emotional strength. Through Middle Eastern Dance, students will learn about cultural expression and become empowered through their dance movements.

This class incorporates some techniques that may be better known as ‘belly dance.’

Portrait-Drawing in a Day $42.00Instructed by Cheryl GouldTuesday, April 29th | 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM

This one-day workshop will concentrate on three portraits. Students will focus on expression, facial proportions, and shading, and will build on the skills they learned in “Drawing in a Day.” Both new students and those who have completed a previous “Drawing in a Day” session are welcome.

Picasso in a Day $42.00 Instructed by Cheryl GouldTuesday, May 20th | 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Picasso is known as the “Master of Diversity” and this class will explore one of his styles—Cubism. Students will draw, cut, paint, and paste to create a cubist still life. As we create this work, we will have fun with viewpoint, color mixing, and composition. Bring an interesting object to draw if you have one, but we will have some, too. Have no fear: nothing we draw or paint will need to look “right.” Picasso’s certainly doesn’t!

Monet and Merlot $40.00Instructed by Andrea SchneiderFridays | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PMThree sessions: April 18th | May 23rd | June 20th

Join Andrea each month for a little wine, a little art, and whole lot of fun! In each class, she will guide you through a step-by-step painting project. You will leave with a completed 12”X12” acrylic painting plus the shared memory of creativity and great conversation with friends new and old. Wine and snacks will be provided. Upcycle old watches, jewelry, and beads to create a Steampunk-style pin, earrings, or photo frame. All basic supplies are included, but feel free to bring any antique jewelry, keys, metal parts, or gears that you would like to incorporate into your design.

This is a class for both beginners and intermediate-level students. Students will learn many different bead-making techniques and will be able to take home between 8 and 10 finished beads. Please bring your own safety glasses and one small MAPP tank found at any local hardware store. Former participants are welcome!

Join Corri, a local jewelry artist, to create a unique piece of jewelry from start to finish. The basics of jewelry making and stringing will be covered. April 4 – May 30The Ferris State University Art Gallery and Artworks presents:

Secret Mantra by Le Quoc Viet at Artworks GalleryOpening Reception: April 4, 2014 | 6:00PM - 7:30 PM

Secret Mantra” is an art installation about losing the root language of Vietnam and everything that loss entails. The art of Le Quoc Viet focuses on history through the representation of ancient calligraphy as a metaphor. The images he uses reference mantra pillars from the Dinh Dynasty and are applied on illuminated fabric lanterns.

The Indochina Arts Partnership (IAP) conducts programs of cultural development and artistic and educational exchange between the United States and the countries of Southeast Asia, with a primary focus on Vietnam.

Founded in 1888, to foster cultural understanding through shared art, the non-profit IAP has produced two widely traveled exhibitions (As Seen by Both Sides and An Ocean Apart) of modern work by Vietnamese and American artists. The Partnership has sponsored residencies in America for more than one hundred Vietnamese visual artists, writers, and teachers.

Hoffman Challenge Quilts by Elsie VredenburgIn celebration of the 25th year of the Hoffman Challenge, Artworks will exhibit the quilt entries of our own artist, Elsie Vredenburg. Elsie is a graduate of Michigan State and holds a BS in Home Economics Education. Elsie began quilting at the insistence of her grandmother.

In Elsie’s words, “I quilt because I love fabric in its many colorsand patterns, and I love cutting it up and sewing it back together to make new designs. Even though I always said I had no artistic talent (translation: ability to draw) and avoided art classes every time I could, I think deep in my heart, this is what I always longed to be able to do. I make quilts for enjoyment, both mine and others.”

Harmonica Group The Harmonica Group is comprised of anumber of local musicians who meet every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in Artworks. They have performed at a number of local schools and other venues. This group is a lot of fun and everyone is invited to attend.

The Picture Lady Program The Picture Lady program is gearing up for their spring series, “Native American Art.” This group of volunteers uses instructional materials purchased by the GFWC to educate school aged children on various aspects of art in a fun and interactive format. Currently, 9 schools have scheduled the Picture Lady which will benefit approximately 900 students. Volunteers for Picture Lady are being recruited for the St. Peter and Reed City schools. Artworks Rentals

From meetings to receptions, Artworks in downtown Big Rapids provides the perfect setting for your next special event. Our stylish, clean accommodations include two kitchenettes, two dance floors, an elevator for accessibility and A/V equipment.

Our upper level -Gallery houses a spacious meeting room surrounded by our rotating art exhibits and can comfortably fit over 100 people. This area is ideal for creative brainstorming or an elegant reception.

On the lower level is Studio A with a dance floor, open space for receptions or meetings and a dressing room.

Also on the lower level is Studio B, comprised of a mirrored dance floor which can accommodate up to 30 people easily with added chairs and tables. This space conveys positive energy and is perfect for dance workshops and all-day seminars alike.
