Mt.Gravatt Bowls Club Junior Days
On Wednesday 20th April and Thursday 21st April the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club ran a Junior Coaching Clinic.
Each day ran from 9am til Noon and was well attended with a total of 23 youngsters aged from 8 to 14
years joining in.
The daily programme consisted of a welcome to the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club followed by the aim, rules and
etiquette of the game of Lawn Bowls. A DVD titled "Lawn Bowls for Beginners" starring Karen Murphy and
Cameron Curtis was shown. Students were keen to get out on the Green and show what they could do.
Great enthusiasm was shown by all and many questions were asked.
Once they hit the Green, five rinks were set up with a different activity on each and all students were
rotated through; but only after achieving a predetermined standard of skill and acceptable behaviour.
About 90 minutes was spent on the green and we all then moved back inside for a cool drink, slice of fruit
and a debrief. The enthusiasm had not waned and many relevant questions were asked.

Broadbeach ace Sean Ingham skipped his side of Paul
O'Brien and Ben Savva to a five-shot victory over Anthony
Williams' Maryborough outfit of Darren Redman and Clive Williams in the final at Banyo Bowls Club, 20-15.
At just 16-years-old, the win may well make Ingham the
youngest player ever to skip a team to an open state title.
On Wednesday 20th April, a reporter
with the Southern Star Newspaper
arrived and took some photographs for
publication in the Newspaper. Again
this excited the Students. Many
showed great promise and skill.
Many Students asked if further Clinics
would be held as they are keen to
return and repeat their positive
experience. Planning for the next Clinic
to be held during the September 2011
School Holidays is already under way.
Thanks to Malcolm Ferguson.

Bowls Queensland Awards
In the junior category, singles queen Carly Griffiths scored her third consecutive Junior Player of the Year
award. Griffiths, who made history in 2010 by capturing a third junior state singles title, was a shoo-in for
the player of the year gong. The 17-year-old had an amazing run in 2010, bagging the Australian Open
Under-18 title, as well as representing Queensland and Australia at Under-18 level.
Meanwhile McKenzie Park young gun Sean Ingham won the junior male Player of the Year crown on the
back of an impressive year which culminated in the 16-year-old taking out pairs gold at the junior
nationals. Ingham overcame his championship-winning pairs partner, Wynnum Manly’s Jason Carpenter,
and Broadbeach’s Scotty DeJongh to win the coveted award.
Carpenter wasn’t be too disappointed however, picking up the Emerging Player of the Year title for his
achievements in 2010.
Junior State Championships
The foursome went head-to-head with Joel Leese’s all-star side of Kyle Franks, Rohan Wilson and Braidan
Leese in the title decider. And while the teams looked pretty evenly matched on paper, it was Ingham’s
outfit that came out on top, 24-16, earning the 16-year-old his second consecutive fours crown.
The girls title went to the Pine Rivers- Bribie Island outfit of Jessica Parolin and Natasha Jones, who dropped just one of their five round robin games to finish with a championship winning 8+46.
Their victory was far from clean-cut however, with Burnett sisters, Cassandra and Bolivia Millerick, hot on their heels with 8+30.
The win gave Parolin her second title of the tournament after she partnered Madi Styles, Lauren Wilson and Elizabeth McKillop to the fours crown on Sunday.
Meanwhile in the combined under-15 pairs final, Burnett twins Joel and Joshua Andersen, emerged the right side of a tight tussle with Max North and Daniel Keogh.
In a game that could have gone either way the Burnett boys kept their cool to grab a narrow one-shot
win, 20-19.
Queensland young gun Elizabeth McKillop captured her
second consecutive state fours title with a clean sweep victory on day one of the Junior State Championships.
McKillop, who played second for Carly Griffith in last year’s
win, skipped an impressive outfit of Jessica Parolin, Madi
Styles and Lauren Wilson to a 3-0 victory in the round robin event.
McKenzie Park ace Sean Ingham won double at this year’s Junior
Championships, clinching the pairs and fours crowns.
The Queensland rep kicked off his winning spree in the pairs
where he combined with Bribie Island’s Mitch Wilson to capture
the under-18s title. The duo breezed through sectional play to
reach the title showdown at Pelican Waters, where they notched
up a comfortable 10-shot win over Woodford’s Nick Casey and James Schiulaz, 22-12.
Almost immediately the duo were back in action, alongside their
vanquished pairs opponent, Schiulaz, and Bribie Island’s Lockie
Rowden, in the boys fours final.
Queensland glamour girl Carly Griffiths snared an historic fourth
consecutive junior singles crown at Pelican Waters Bowls Club.
Griffiths, who downed her Queensland teammate Lauren Wilson,
25-9, to clinch the title, broke the record she herself set in 2010 for the most consecutive singles crowns.
Griffiths, who is currently on a break from competitive bowls,
didn’t compete in any other disciplines at this year’s
championships, returning only to defend her singles title one last time before graduating from the junior ranks.
Meanwhile, Gayndah’s Taleah Putney overcame Binjour’s Brittanny Wiley to clinch the under-15s title.
Putney jumped out to a unassailable 20-4 lead after 14 ends, but Wiley never gave up, pegging her way back to get within seven, before Putney took the final two ends for a 25-15 win.
The usually cool Leese looked frazzled for a time, but quickly regained his composure to take the match
and retain his title, 25-15.
The win marked Leese’s second hat-trick in as many days. The youngster, who was part of Scotty
DeJongh’s champion triples outfit in 2009 and 2010, won the title in his own right when he skipped
Nathan Carpenter and Ashley Schmidt to victory over his big brother, Joel Leese, in the final at Caloundra
Bowls Club. As the older, more experienced outfit, Joel’s side of Kyle Franks and Rohan Wilson went into
the title showdown as warm favourites. But baby brother quickly set about deconstructing his rival’s game, clinching the title 24-16.

Burnett sisters, Cassandra and Bolivia Millerick, have bagged
Queensland’s junior triples crown, bringing to two the number of
titles won by Burnett twins this week.
On Monday Burnett brothers, Joel and Joshua Andersen, grabbed
the under-15 pairs title, kicking off what looks set to be an impressive championships for the Bundaberg club.
The sisters combined with Bribie Island ace Natasha Jones to clinch
their title. The trio cruised through their round robin campaign
undefeated to finish with a championship-winning 10+75.
Gold Coast young gun Braidan Leese captured his third
consecutive singles crown, breaking the record he set last
year for the most under-15 titles won at Queensland’s Junior
Championships. The Coolangatta ace overran Tweed Heads’
Liam Jackson to snatch the coveted title during the final at Pelican Waters Bowls Club.
Fourteen-year-old Leese had looked on track for a quick
victory, leading the match 20-8 after just 15 ends. But
Jackson launched a determined fightback, killing an end before clawing his way back to within eight of his rival.
There was some consolation for Ingham, with the Queensland rep receiving the Ray Lanham Player of the
Championships trophy.
Burnett’s Cassandra Millerick was named the girls’ Player of the Championships.

Sean Ingham’s hopes of winning a third
junior title were crushed when the 16-year-
old ace from McKenzie Park went down to
Helensvale’s Rohan Wilson in the state
singles final.
Ingham, who clinched Queensland’s junior
pairs and fours titles, struggled to get points
on the board when the duo met in the decider
at Pelican Waters.
Ingham opened up the scoring and was
leading the match 3-1 before Wilson hit his
straps, stringing together the next 11 ends.
When Ingham did eventually strike back on
the 16th end, the game already looked well beyond his reach, 16-3.
Wilson went on to win 25 – 15.
