PRESIDENTS WORD:
Well we have seen the season start, with some excellent results for some of our teams. Thank you to everyone who has made the effort to get themselves out for the start of the season. I know that it is difficult with the season starting in March, and summer sports yet to finish. I encourage all of you to take the time to support a team you do not play in over the weekends
ahead, it is always great to have people on the sideline encouraging you to play.
We have seen the start of Friday night Premier League hockey at the State Hockey Centre, with our Women and Men playing Grange Royals and both having excellent wins for their first taste of Friday night hockey.
Please make sure that you have registered online and paid your mandatory fee to be eligible to play.

Junior Co-coordinators Report
Welcome to 2015 Junior season. Training is now underway and the training times can be found on the front of this newsletter and in the Junior’s section on website. The junior season will kick off on Friday 1st May and as soon as the fixtures are available from Hockey SA, we will let all teams know. I would like to welcome some old and new faces to the junior coaching panel for 2015. Minkey: Rodney Thorpe U9 Mixed: Matt Toonen and Luke Watts U11 Mixed: Mark Dean and Jess Axford U14 Girls: Lesley Dean U14A Boys: Jordan Glover U14B Boys: Matt Toonen U18A Girls: Alison Stock U18B Girls: Rodney Thorpe, (Assistant Emma Axford) U18A Boys: Nicole Mentha, )Assistant Kym Strawbridge) A reminder to all players that shinpads and mouthguards should always be worn for training as well as games. Lesley Dean
Our club is run solely by volunteers and all we ask of our junior parents is that they assist in the canteen twice a year while their child's game is being played. The canteen requires two parents per game to help serve/run the scoreboard. Each coach/manager will draw up a roster and allocate out the duties. It would be greatly appreciated if you could please turn up to your allocation or swap with another parent if you are unable to make it. Thank you.

Coaching the Coaches
Styles & Structure game plans: 13th April PL coaches, Holly Evans, Ashley Thompson TBC & Kym Strawbridge will be explaining to all junior & senior coaches the style & structure being used by the men's & women's PL & M1 teams for 2015. It is strongly recommended that all coaches attend so they can see what these successful squads are operating so the we can become uniform from all junior teams to senior teams in the way that we coach our players. Tackling & Goal Shooting: 10th May Ian Wishart & Ben Sutherland will be giving an interesting seminar given on tackling, channeling, goal shooting styles & entry into the attacking circle Level 1 Coaching Course: 15th June Tony Gunn (Hockey SA Games Development Officer). This is a great opportunity for all coaches to get/refresh their accreditation (we need to have a minimum of 10 people attending).
Outletting and Attacking Structure: 13th July Holly Evans will discuss ways to move the play out of defence and how to structurally set up scoring opportunities Terry McLoughlin (Coaching Development)

Meet our new Premier League Men’s Coach
Full name: Kym Strawbridge
Nickname: Straws, Strawbs, Kymbo
Occupation: Manager, Field Standards & Risk Management with Telstra
Operations Business Unit
How long have you been a Zulu? Since the club was formed in
1994, coached a NEHC junior
team that year.
What team do you currently play in? Undecided this year but will be
representing SA in the National Hockey Masters Championships in Cairns later
this year.
What is your favourite playing position and why? Defensive Mid or Sweeper.
Why = read the play and set up attacking moves.
How would you describe your coaching philosophy? I’ve coached a wide ranging number of teams over the
last 35 years from multiple SA Country Championship winning teams, the SA Country Team, an Adelaide
District team (PL equivalent today), various under age teams including the U11’s at NEHC and various senior
grades. Based on that, my coaching tends to be very situational depending on the group of people I’m
coaching with a significant focus on effectively executing the basic skills on the game. From a game style
perspective I like a combination of Australian and European styles.
What are you most looking forward to this year? Building on from the PLM/M1M success of the past while
evolving the players contemporary skill set, game playing structure and linking the U18 Boys team into the
senior mens program.
What is your favourite sport besides hockey? I enjoy watching most sports played at the elite level.
Who is your favourite international player and why? Mark Knowles – his ability to read and influence play.
List three people you would invite to dinner (dead or alive)? Angelina Jolie (Humanitarian), Rohan Atkinson
(humour), Bill Gates (see if he has a spare $1M for a second, international standard, pitch at our club).
Why do you like North East Hockey Club? The inclusive family atmosphere and opportunity for anyone to
enjoy the great game of hockey, irrespective of their hockey playing ability.

The first tribal night will be held on the 2nd May and held on a PL/M1 match day. Another Tribal night will be held on a M3/4 match day later this year. Zulu ladies perform at Port Pirie Pre-season camp
The Premier League / Metro 1 squad travelled to Port Pirie for their inaugural preseason camp in early March. The girls arrived early on Sunday morning and conducted a junior skills camp for the Port Pirie locals before spending the next two hours working on goal shooting, outletting and elimination skills. A tactical session on pressing and outletting was given with the girls completing Q & A’s on a mini pitch in the clubrooms. Ashley, Holly and Patrick gave a “coach the coach” presentation with coaches in the Port Pirie region and some meaningful hockey discussions were hard between all coaches. After lunch, the zuluettes played the Port Pirie All Star women’s team, which included our own Amy Mark, Lucy Wood and Nat Sommerville. It was a great contest for the Zuluettes who eventually came out on top 3-1. After a lovely dinner with the Port Pirie team, the group bonded and had a sleepover in the Port Pirie clubrooms. Upon waking, the coaches cooked pancakes and were back on the pitch for some outletting and penalty corners before heading back to Adelaide. A massive thanks to Byron and the Port Pirie Hockey Association for making the camp a huge success.
