Welcome

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our 22nd Sire and Yearling hind sale.

It is also with sadness that we remember the passing of my father, Walter, earlier this year. He started the stud in 1979 and never lost his passion for breeding stags and really enjoyed getting around other stag sales and catching up with other farmers. I will endeavour to carry on his legacy of stockmanship and integrity with Arawata.

Our aim has been to breed English cross deer with size, temperament, velvet structure and weight. Plus the ability to shift to a new environment and carry on for the new owner.

!is year’s line up is very pleasing with some outstanding sires on offer, including the first of Ulysses’s sons for sale and they all have his laid back approach to life with strong velvet heads developing. We also have stags via A.I from Zama and Platinum plus outstanding sons of Arawata’s Claudius, Van Gogh and Icon.

Our spring has been very cold and wet which has delayed button drop in the sale stags, which makes preparing a sale catalogue no easy task, so there will be some changes by sale day.

Despite the tough spring, stock performance has been good with all yearling hinds averaging 92kg (24.11.12) and yearling stags averaging 121kg (7.12.12), which is good for English cross deer. All the 4 year and older velveting stags averaged just under 6.0kg SA velvet which is pleasing in testing growing conditions.

We have a new website www.arawatadeerfarm.co.nz which has updated photos and some video clips of the sale stags. So check it out as it is a great way to view stags heads as they develop.
