Concept: Four ‘Woodland Groups’ based on tree species characteristic of successional and unique forest communities within Lower Makefield Township, oriented around the four compass points: 1. (North) Climax Forest 2. (South) Young Emerging Woodland 3. (West) Mature Forest 4. (East) Sweetgum-Oak Coastal Plain

Forest Forest type limited to the 5-6 mile wide Atlantic Coastal Plan Conservation Landscape along the Delaware Estuary. Some of the largest remaining unfragmented sections of this forest type are in the Five Mile Woods Preserve.

5. Central Elm representative of important native tree species killed or under threat from exotic pests and diseases.

Species Selection Criteria • Native Tree Species. • Representative of

different forest communities in Lower Makefield Township.

• Availability at sizes requested:

2 ½ - 3” cal. Shade Trees 8-10’ Understory Trees

• Disease resistance (Particularly Elm Selection.)

• Species with low maintenance requirements once established.

• Compatibility with existing site conditions (full sun, upland conditions, etc.)
