Welcome to Grace Café

Grace Café (ASUMC’s outreach to folks currently without homes) is open every Sunday through the end of June. After a brief period of faith sharing, those gathered will enjoy a home-cooked meal hosted

by volunteer groups. 200 people attended last week’s Grace Café. Swarthmore UMC and staff provide today’s dinner. There are still openings for hosts to bring food and prepare a meal for about 200 people. If you know of a group that would like to assist in this important mission, please have them contact the church office at 215-568-6250 or Darlene DiDomineck and Carmen Francesco at [email protected] Greeters, servers and clean-up crew are needed and always welcome.

There will be board games, card games, and perhaps even some action games, all to it making for a fun evening. Please let Rev. Robin know whether or not you will be attending and some idea of the type of side dish you will be bringing by contacting him at [email protected]. Annual Conference 2018 Registration and Deadlines Registration is now open for Annual Conference attendees and exhibitors. Register online now! The registration deadline is Friday, May 18. All Media Materials (PowerPoint, video, etc.) are due to the Bishop's Executive Secretary, Amy Botti, by May 4. . (The deadline for resolutions has passed.)

Helping Puerto Rico Rise Again update

Six months after Hurricane Maria devastated much of Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, we get an update from the Rev. Nick Camacho on needs and challenges still facing the Methodist Church there, once a part of our Philadelphia Episcopal Area. Churches are trying to restore their facilities and their communities in the slow recovery process. Camacho leads our conference's aptly named Helping Puerto Rico Rise Again campaign. He reports to our Cabinet this week.

"I Am Human"

That was the sign the sanitation workers wore in Memphis when they marched for the right to unionize for safe working conditions and decent pay. It was their fight that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis where he was assassinated on April 4th, 50 years ago.

To honor Dr. King’s legacy on this sad anniversary, POWER rallied and marched last Wednesday in support of hotel workers who are fighting to unionize in Philadelphia, then on Thursday we held a press conference at City Hall to introduce the 21st Century Living Wage bill.

This legislation, sponsored by Councilman Squilla, will raise the wages of contracted and subcontracted workers in Philadelphia. We are calling on City Council to “Lead by Example” by raising their pay to $15/hr. by 2020 and we won’t stop until every Philadelphian is making a Living Wage!

This is one step in POWER’s fight for the rights of workers across the region. We are also pushing for a higher statewide minimum wage and the right to pass our own minimum wage legislation in Philadelphia.

What you can do: Contact your city Councilperson and urge him/her to support the 21st Century Living Wage bill.

You can find your council rep’s phone number by going online to Philadelphia City Council at http://phlcouncil.com/. At the bottom of the home page, click on the “Find My Council Member” link and type in your address. Your rep pops right up with the phone number.

Now, call that number and ask to speak to the Council Rep. If he/she is not available, ask to speak to their Legislative Assistant. When you get that person, tell them you live in their district and are a member of POWER, and you want Council to pass the 21st Century Living Wage bill to raise the pay of city contract workers from $12 to $15.

On the anniversary week of Martin Luther King's death in the cause of fair treatment of workers, this is a faithful proclamation of our moral values. Thanks so much for your help.
