As a sign of this promise, God shows Noah the rainbow. When we see a rainbow, the blessing recited has a unique formulation. It emphatically states that God remembers His covenant, zocher haberit, and is trustworthy in His covenant, ne’eman bivrito. What does the phrase, “ne’eman bivrito” convey? For many people, blessings or promises are non-transferable, their benefit or ownership cannot be reassigned to another person when the intended beneficiary passes away. And despite the benefactor remembering the initial recipient fondly, the benefit does not pass to the next generation. However, God’s promises transfer to the later generations. With Noah, God promises to never destroy the world and with Abraham, the midrash points out, God promises his love and protection to all subsequent generations without hesitation. These blessings are infi- nite and eternally transferrable. Nothing will change the covenant; this is “ ne’eman bivrito.” However, there is a difference between the promises made to the generation of Noah and the promises made to Abraham. Noah’s generation earned the Divine pledge by default. Abraham earned Divine protection and provi- dence in return for his steadfast faith in God. Rather than ride on the coattails of our forefather, we must use this as a model for our own lives. Consequently, in our quest for the Divine, we must also remain steadfast in our covenant and guarantee that it is transferred to the next generation without hesitation. Dvar Torah, Parshat Noach By Rabbi Tzvi Klugerman

After Noah emerges from the ark, God promises to never again bring a flood to destroy the entire world.

For many people, blessings or promises are non-transferable, their benefit or ownership cannot be reassigned to

another person when the intended beneficiary passes away. These blessings are infi-nite and eternally transferrable. Nothing will change the covenant; this is “ne’eman bivrito.”

However, there is a difference between the promises made to the generation of Noah and the promises made to Abraham. Noah’s generation earned the Divine pledge by default. Abraham earned Divine protection and provi-dence in return for his steadfast faith in God. Rather than ride on the coattails of our forefather, we must use this as a model for our own lives. Consequently, in our quest for the Divine, we must also remain steadfast in our covenant and guarantee that it is transferred to the next generation without hesitation.

Early Childhood Corner by Lisa Parshan, Director Early Childhood

Welcome back to the first full week of school! This Tuesday, we began YOGA! Yoga is lead by Corrie Chasler of JCC & Kids Empowered. Gymnastics, which will take place beginning on Friday, October 26th, will be coached by Cathy Fresia of the JCC Oak Park. These exciting enrichments will be available to all the students in the ECC supporting our commitment to give the kids “Healthy Bodies & Healthy Minds.”

GREAT START TO QUALITY In September 2011, the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) launched a Tiered Quality Rating and Improvement System for all licensed Child Care facilities in the state. Akiva Hebrew Day School’s Early Child-hood Center’s participation in this program reflects our commitment to make sure that your children have access to the highest quality childcare. Scores are based on teacher training and qualifications, facility usage, and family part-nerships (just to name a few). This month, an independent consultant was invited to make a sight visit to give us an impartial quality rating and complete an evaluation using a nationally recognized assessment tool. When completed, the results of our rating will be available and made to the public, through Great Start Connect of Michigan. We hope to continue these type of partnerships through Oakland County, and the State of Michigan and continue to be suppor-tive of growth and development of our staff , and our program!

CELEBRATING PARASHAT NOACH - with all our senses!! To celebrate Parashat Noach, we enjoyed a banana boat teva, complete with animal crackers! We enjoyed loading the animals onto the boat, and eating a crunchy snack! In Nursery 3, Morah Sarah's class learned about float-ing and sinking. Whether it was mixing oil and water, or placing objects in water to see if they float or not, the 3-year-olds enjoyed science related activities that tied with the Parasha. On Friday, John Forshee from the Barnyard Express entertained us with his array of well-trained farm animals and a farm animal show and petting farm, which was enjoyed by the Early Childhood classes and the first and second grade classes. Programs such as our petting zoo and horseback rides during Purim are made possible directly through the funds raised through Early Childhood Chal-lah sale! Challot can be ordered by Wednesday of each week. Shabbat Shalom!

Alumni Spotlight

Gabrielle (Albert) Altman 1990 I graduated in 1990 after three years of high school and a year and a half at Midreshet Lindenbaum. I was the first Akiva graduate to attend Midreshet Lindenbaum directly from high school. I chose Linenbaum because at that time, it was the only post-high school program in Israel that taught girls Gemara. The skills that I learned, the friends I made, and the cultural and geographical connection that I developed with the country were intensely rewarding and enriching. After Lindenbaum, I attended Barnard College where I earned a BA in Comparative Religion and Political Science. I married Daniel Altman in 1994, then went on to earn an MA in Health Advocacy and Administration at Sarah Lawrence College. I worked as a Financial Manager in the Department of Surgery at NYU Medical Center for many years. I am now in the process of re-entering the work force after taking a hiatus to raise my four children, Isaac (16), Avigayil (13), Sophia (10), and Eli (7) in Teaneck, NJ. I am actively involved with my kids' schools, my shul, various charities and organizations, adult education classes and lectures, tennis, running and biking. I have many fond memories of Akiva, but what stands out most was the organic nature of my experience growing up in a tight-knit community and attending a small school. At Akiva, the local shul rabbis taught classes, the Bnei Akiva shlichim and NCSY staff were a regular presence at the school, the parents gave shi-urim and lectures in addition to volunteering, the founders attended important school events, and the teachers pitched in to help with whatever extra things need to be done. Educating us seemed to be a community affair. Many teachers made positive educational and personal impressions on me as well. Mrs. Chaya Sarah Silberberg taught me how to figure out what's bothering Rashi in addition to baking challah with a bracha and welcoming me into her home for Shabbat. Mrs. Monica Yaniv drilled me in Hebrew grammar and fluent conversational Hebrew in addition to exposing me to modern Israeli poetry and culture. Rabbi Van Leeuwen taught me Jew-ish values in addition to songs of the pre-state Israeli partisans. I am in some degree of contact with many Akiva graduates and former students, some of whom are close friends. I look back on my Akiva years fondly, and wish the school continued success with their educational mission.
