2.1. Why stainless steel ?

Page 12: Architect Presentation

Above the third floor; New York City’s 160 East 42nd Street (completed in 1930) using stainless steel grade 302 exterior panels. They are exposed to pollution and coastal salt to date.

They were cleaned for the first time in 1955, restoring their appearance.

The Chrysler building can be seen in the background. It is stainless steel grade 302. It has been cleaned only twice since 1930!

Page 16: Architect Presentation

Prismatic Coloring of Stainless Steel

• Stainless steel is an alloy of steel that contains more than 11% Chromium

• It may or may not contain Nickel or Molybdenum

• A clear as Glass Chromium Oxide layer forms in the presence Oxygen.(“14 microns”)

• When layer is increased a prism is created on the surface

2.2. The technology

Page 17: Architect Presentation

Naturally occurring chrome oxide is increased electrochemically. Light coming through the increased depth is bent at a different angles as it travels through the shallow layer. The difference shows up in the visible spectrum. A range of Colors are possible depending on thickness of the oxide.

It is important to note that the viewing angle, light conditions, and the chemistry of stainless all have an effect on the process. If you desire a static color this process is not your solution!
