Durability and Maintenance

Although often overlooked when evaluating the envrionmental performance of a product, durability is extremely important as it can reduce the impact associated with building stock by eliminating wastes from demolition and conserving resources otherwise needed for repair and replacement. Masonry units are inherently durable, in fact most block buildings are demol-ished due to obsolescence rather than deterioration.

Some of the properties that contribute to the durability of masonry units include resistance to ultraviolet solar radiation, vermin and insects, chemicals, extreme weather such as wind, fire and earthquakes. One of the challenges to the durability of concrete is the potential for reaction with water. All Superlite’s masonry units are treated with an integral water repellent that eliminates potential for mold growth and deterioration and also controls efflorescence. Integral water repellent eliminates the need to apply sealers-further reducing the environmen-tal and health impacts of maintaining coatings and finishes maintenance.

The R-values below are representative of a hollow cavity. Intergal insulation such as loose and foamed in place fills will increase the R-value, while a grout fill will decrease the R-value yet increase the thermal mass properties.

Thermal Mass

When selecting envelope systems it is important to take into account masonry’s inherent thermal storage capabilities, refered to as thermal mass. Well designed buildings benefit by reducing indoor temperature fluctuations and therefore peak energy demand. During colder temperatures thermal mass absorbs heat by direct sunlight and later realeases heat during colder parts of the day. During warmer temperatures thermal mass absorbs heat during the hottest parts of the day and realeases it during off-peak hours when HVAC equipment is more efficient and energy prices are lower. R-values and U-values do not account for advantages of thermal mass, yet ASHRAE 90.1 allows project teams to measure thermal mass properties when modeling energy performance with programs such as DOE-2.
