What a great start of the year for the Area Development Partnership. No time has been wasted, as we have wrapped up two great First Friday Breakfasts, two informative Legislative Forums and two exciting groundbreakings for Conway’s Family Pub and Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar.
With Spring well on its way, the Hub City will come alive with many outdoor events and festivals to attend. I look forward to another great HUBFEST coming up on Saturday, April 7, 2018 and the many wonderful events that will take place throughout Greater Hattiesburg during this time of year. There are many great ADP programs and events on the horizon, and I encourage you to take advantage of the benefits that come with your membership and introduce prospective members to everything the ADP has to offer.
As we head into springtime here in Greater Hattiesburg, it’s a fabulous time to focus on our stellar quality of life and tourism efforts. Congratulations to Marlo Dorsey for being named Executive Director of VisitHattiesburg as their team promotes Greater Hattiesburg to business and leisure travelers. Area hotels are flourishing and new ones are being built thanks to our diverse economy and visitors are coming in from literally around the world for business, education, military, and leisure activities.
Sporting events abound in Greater Hattiesburg during the spring and of course outdoor festivals and concerts are plentiful as musicians and organizers take advantage of our superb weather. Congratulations to Southern Miss for sweeping Mississippi State in baseball to start the season at The Pete! The opening weekend had a major economic impact on Greater Hattiesburg! USM and Carey are both experiencing awesome spring sports with highly ranked teams in numerous categories. We look forward to joining our friends from Carey for an ADP Business After Hours at the ballpark April 17th at Milton Wheeler Field as the highly ranked Crusaders host a Tuesday night game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The ADP’s HUBFEST takes place April 7th in Downtown Hattiesburg and this year our very own Adam Doleac will headline this incredible music and arts festival. April also brings another edition of Live @ Five, which has been wildly popular as people flock to Town Square Park for Friday night concerts. Another edition of FestivalSouth is also right around the corner, so make plans now for Mississippi’s only multi-week, multi-genre arts festival slated for June 9-23.
Upon completion, the long anticipated District at Midtown will provide an incredible mixed-use development in the heart of Hattiesburg. This phenomenal new development will serve as a magnet for visitors as they make their way to the Hub City. With $3.1 billion in retail sales, our region’s retail and restaurant scene continues to flourish. The ADP, your regional chamber of commerce and economic development agency, continues to develop strategic programming to help businesses thrive. Our board of directors, staff, and volunteers work hard daily to create an environment that encourages economic expansion. Thanks for suiting up with our team as we take the field to help you grow personally so that you can flourish professionally. Call on our talented team if we can ever be of service.

VisitHATTIESBURGTourism Team Promotes Craft Your Own Adventure
An innovative and artistic hub of the Gulf South, Hattiesburg has emerged as a premier visitor destina- tion with an impressive sense of place for business and leisure travelers. The city is rapidly becoming anevent, history, live music, outdoor attraction and culinary destination for millennials and baby boomers.During the last year, the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission (VisitHATTIESBURG) has successfullyexecuted a re-branding of Hattiesburg, focusing on this edgy, welcoming, and diverse culture.
During 2017, the VisitHBURG team fully revamped its entire online presence, using the latest marketing trends and digital platforms to modernize and streamline its brand. The most notable success of this plan was a complete overhaul of its traditional website (VisitHBURG.org) into a virtual visitors center. Featuring local events, attractions, restaurants, hotels, blogs, and themed itineraries, the site was designed specifically with travelers in mind, ensuring ease of access on mobile devices. Additionally, the team increased its social media engagement, on Facebook and Instagram through generate content. “Destination marketing is a highly competitive
industry, and our HBURG team is focused on strengthening and expanding our sales and marketing efforts to best grow Hattiesburg’s tourism economy,” Marlo Dorsey, executive director of VisitHATTIESBURG, said.
VisitHBURG also created a two-minute video that authentically showcases the city’s assets, including its culinary scene, music, outdoor recreation, attractions, meeting venues, and hotels. The video promotes Hattiesburg to visitors in targeted markets of surrounding states. VisitHBURG.org Home Page
VISITORSERVICESIn addition to VisitHATTIESBURG’s digital campaign, the organization upgraded its infor-mational collateral for consistent, vivid presentation at tradeshows, welcome centers, and locally to inform visitors and residents about HBURG.
With so many offerings in Hattiesburg from Downtown to Midtown to West HBURG, VisitHBURG neatly pack-aged these assets in its new sales kit for conferences, tournaments, and large-scale visitor events.
To attract more group tours and travel writers, the team created a portfolio of amenities offered, including a listing of red carpet services, eight HBURG hotspots, top five reasons to bring a group to Hattiesburg, and four themed itineraries, with more being developed.
“Partnerships strengthen the team’s reach and enhance the knowledge base of all that Hattiesburg community has to offer. Our hotel partners are extremely important to us, as they host our overnight guests 365 days a year. We are 100% committed to sharing Hattiesburg’s value as a visitor destination to keep our hotels filled with both business and leisure travelers,” Dorsey said.VisitHBURG.org Blog Preview

MISSISSIPPI’S 3RDMOST VISITED CITYToday’s travelers live in a dynamic, fast-pasted environment where accurate, readily available facts and details are vital to making travel plans for destinations. The most successful destination marketing organizations and convention and visitors bureaus provide the proper balance of community assets and user-friendly interfaces for information sharing. VisitHBURG’s ultimate goal is to be a comprehensive travel resource for today’s tourists to use and for the future of travel.
Hattiesburg hosted more than 1.8 million business and leisure travelers in 2016, making it the third most visited city in Mississippi. While the State’s overall tourism industry has seen gradual growth, HBURG’s is swiftly increasing as the city provides more reasons to visit to travelers.
Combined with VisitHBURG’s remodeled social media campaign, the new website and video won the award for Best Overall Promotional Campaign at the 2017 Mississippi Governor’s Conference on Tourism. Additionally, Hattiesburg was named a top 25 holiday shopping destination in the U.S. by Expedia.
Downtown ArtWalk & Holiday Open House, November 2017
However, VisitHBURG’s greatest achievement was recognized through the double-digit growth in hotel revenue and occupancy
rates in its local hotel sector, which was a result of a growing visitor market, strong partnerships, and a multi-state digital outreach campaign organized and funded by VisitHBURG. In addition to attracting a record number of visitors, this revenue level brought real dollars into the local economy, creating more hospitality jobs for residents. In 2018, Hattiesburg’s number of hotel rooms available to travelers will increase by more than 200 with two modern hotels opening by summer.
To fully realize Hattiesburg’s true potential as a visitor destination, the team at VisitHBURG must ensure its continued commitment to effective growth strategies in a competitive marketing environment. Overall, the team is pleased with the results of 2017, looking forward to more years of growth and prosperity for the Hattiesburg community.
VisitHBURG is also focusing on more collaboration with its area partners in 2018 by establishing a Hotel & Hospitality Association.
“It’s our responsibility to showcase our community’s numerous tourism assets, and we greatly value our relationships with our hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, and tourism attractions. When we collaborate, we all become more engaged and informed brand ambassadors for our community,” Frank James, hotel industry representative and Hattiesburg Tourism Commission chair, said.
“Partnerships strengthen the team’s reach and enhance the knowledge base of all that Hattiesburg community has to offer.”

For 30 years, Leadership Pinebelt has cultivated emerging community leaders who dedicate themselves to the betterment of the Greater Hattiesburg Area of Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties. The program is designed to broaden the base from which emerging leadership is derived and to serve as a catalyst for increasing diversity among future leaders. Class sessions are focused on enhancing leadership skills and garnering a better understanding of the position of healthcare, cultural arts, economic development, military and industry;
the region’s essential assets. Class members are selected based on specific criteria including: time commitment, community involvement, diversity and willingness to work toward collective goals. The LEADERS Steering
committee reviews each application and selects the class based on these criteria. The selection process is very detailed and competitive and is considered to be an honor if chosen.
