This term my focus has been with our Prep students and teachers. Each year we set an Improvement Agenda and this year we are focussing on writing. Our Improvement Agenda is called ‘Be a Ready Writer’ which supports all children’s ability to write. I have been encouraging the Preps to be successful writers by saying ‘Finger grip, Say it, Say it, Write it, Sound It Out, and Check it’. Parking patience

HeadliceKeeping distance

Parking certainly has its peak moments at drop off and pick up times at our school but we request your tolerance and understanding. There have been reports of altercations between parents on the road at the front of the school and upsettingly these have been witnessed by students. These are matters for the police as they are on the public road, but we ask for your patience and respect of other parents at all times.

A couple of classes have reported head lice in the past week. Please check your child’s hair regularly and treat if you need to.Thank you for keeping your distance.

The royal blue and gold school baseball jackets are now back in stock - $35.00 each.

The Uniform Shop is open Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am - 9.30am.

Thank you

Thank you to the Langton family, whose child is now at high school but who are still a part of the WRSS family, for their donation of mandarins. Every mandarin was enjoyed by children attending our Breakfast Club or needing a visit to the Sandwich Room.

Thank you to Mykal’s family, Mervinah’s family and the Schutz family who have kindly donated uniforms to the school.

We are just about out of uniforms to lend in the very smallest and very largest sizes. Should you be able to donate sizes 4, 12 or 14 we would be very grateful indeed. We need to lend shoes to students who do not have any and are very short on the Prep-Year 1 sizes if you should be having a clear out over the school holidays.

To parent Nikki Traves – the office staff and Leadership Team thank you for always keeping us fattened with your wonderful homemade cakes. The latest chocolate cake is simply the best!

P&C News

Hi everyone! With students returning to school, so has the Breaky program. Not as many children as normal; which is to be expected during these times, but those who are attending are not only getting yummy eggs on toast but are being served and entertained by these amazing Year 12 students from Bentley Park College. These boys are part of the Clontarf Academy and help me out every Monday with community projects. I am excited to say that they are now joining us for breakfast every Thursday morning. Breakfast has totally stepped up! Principal Dan is looking forward to having some of our Year 6 students assisting with our visiting Year 12 boys. Great role models serving our community.More exciting news which you can read about in a separate part of this newsletter is Flexischools is now available!! Yep… super easy. Just quickly

jump online, order and pay. A HUGE thank you to Sokar who has done most of the background work in getting this up and running.I see that our lovely Tuckshop ladies have got a few new special menu items so ensure you try the Burrito Bowl… Yum yum!Take care and enjoy the week!Cathy Zeiger, WRSS P&C President Pictured above: Bentley Park College Clontarf Academy Mentors assisting at Breakfast Club.

Bring a gold coin and wear your pyjamas to school for the day.Note: The student’s outfit must be sun-safe and they will need to still wear

their closed in school shoes and school hat.

Every day is a school dayEven as an adult we never stop learning. Here is what some of the White Rock staff have learnt recently:

Miss Falchetti: I love learning new collective nouns used to describe a group of animals. My latest is A Prickle of Porcupines.

Mrs Krisanski: The reason for the Ace of Spades being such a fancy card is because it’s the manufacturer’s label card. It usually has a better design that the other aces.

Mr McLaren: When something tiny begins expanding at a constant rate it can become mind bogglingly large. Example: A chessboard has 64 squares. If you put one grain of rice on the first square and keep doubling you get to 512 grains of rice on the 10th square. The 64th square will have 9,223,372,036,864,775,808 grains of rice. Wait for it… that is nine quintillion, two hundred and twenty three quadrillion, three hundred and seventy two trillion, thirty six billion, eight hundred and fifty four million, seven hundred and seventy five thousand and eight hundred and eight grains of rice. That’s about 460 times the estimated global production o rice this year.

Mrs Tung-Yep: Cows will always face North South or South North to eat. They have a built in compass.

Ms Nottle: I learnt that ‘seeling’ is a word and homophone to ceiling and sealing. It is an archaic word for closing your eyes.

Mrs Doyle: Salamanders have two halves to their eyeballs – top and bottom. The top is perfectly developed to see above the water line and the bottom for under the water.

Meet our Staff

Hi, my name is Julie Falchetti. How did I get here? I started working one day a week at White Rock State School last year while completing my third year Bachelor of Primary Education degree at James Cook University.

My desire was to work within a school environment to further my understanding of the education system before completing my education degree. What I did not expect to learn was how important a school’s educational ideology is and equally the motivation to provide services to support it.

I really enjoy working with the White Rock State School team, helping to deliver Student Services because Every Day Counts!

Families as First TeachersThis PLAY based Literacy and Numeracy Families As First Teachers group is for children and their families from birth to Pre - Prep age.

Playgroup News

Both of our Playgroups are starting up again in Term 3 on the verandah in front of the school hall.Monday 8.30am – 10.30am hosted by Playgroup Queensland

Tuesday 8.30am – 10.30am organised by Benevolent Society.

FaFT (Families as First Teachers) is not running during Term 2 but will resume again in Term 3 - Thursdays 9am-11am.

Learning at Home - Here are some learning activities that you can do at home during this time while we cannot physically meet up:

Week 8: Objects and Owners

In this game, children think about jobs and activities people do and match them with the equipment or tools they use. This activity is about making connections between information.

Week 9: Opposites

It is good to teach children about opposites. They can also learn new words when they play this game.

Week 10: Same and Different

Children need to be able to see that things can be the same or different. They will also need to know what makes things the same or different. These skills will help them when they start to learn about letters and numbers.

HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE HOLIDAY.

Banana Pancake Recipe

These pancakes are bananas. No, I mean they are literally made from bananas. And eggs. Eggs and bananas, and that’s it. I can see that look you’re giving me right now, but you just have to trust. These two ingredients, whisked together and given a little skillet love, are truly something magical. • 1 ripe banana • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten • Butter or oil, for cooking (optional)

Mash together and drop into a hot pan.Flip tips! When it comes to flipping, here’s what works for me: Let the pancakes cook on the first side until the underside is fairly golden-brown (lift a corner and peek), and until the edges are starting to look set but the middle is still loose like barely set jelly. Gently work a spatula about halfway under the pancake, then lift until the unsupported half of the pancake is just barely lifted off the skillet. Lay the pancake back down on the skillet on its other side. Some of the loose batter will probably spill onto the skillet as you do this; just be sure to lay the pancake on top of the spill. Once the second side is set, the pancakes are much easier to scoop and flip, if additional flipping is needed.Load them up… Try adding chopped nuts, chocolate chips, fresh blueberries, or even a handful of leftover granola. Sprinkle these extras over the pancakes on the griddle as the first side cooks. And of course, when you pile these on your plate, don’t forget the syrup. Or a smear of jam. Or maybe some Nutella. It’s your stack of pancakes - you can eat them however you want. Image credit: Emma Christensen. Credit for the recipe: https://www.thekitchn.com/

Year 1 NewsThis term we have been looking at Character Development.

We have been describing what the character in our story looks like, where they live and what they like to do. We also describe how they have changed throughout the story. This week our focus text is The

Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.

We have also been investigating Material Madness. We’ve been testing materials and their properties. We have made some boats with plasticine to test if they will float and hold two marbles.

We have been very busy since we’ve all been back at school together! We love learning new things in our class everyday.

1/2EP and Mrs Easterbrook and Mrs Peppler

Instrumental Music The Instrumental Music program has come back together from the Covid-19 break with a crash and a bang, a toot and a whistle! (Though much more musically than that sounds, I assure you).

We are working together in little teams in lessons to select and create the pieces that we will be playing at our end of year IM Night, as well as ironing out our band songs. The students are looking forward to playing for an audience when gatherings are allowed again, and next term’s potential parades are a cause for great excitement as the band show off their new song ‘Funkytown’.

With assessment recording just around the corner, I’d like to encourage the music students to keep their music goals firmly in their minds and practice, practice, practice those scales and solo pieces! Parents, you can encourage your kids to practice by checking in on their progress regularly and being an audience for their pieces to help them develop their ability to perform! Doing so is a wonderful way to help your student onto the path of mastering and loving their instrument.

Yours in Music,

Miss Trotter

Tuckshop NewsWe encourage our children to share and be kind but unfortunately Tuckshop food needs to be the exception to the rule. Please talk to your children and discourage them from using their Tuckshop money to shout their friends treats. Some students have food allergies, or their parents simply don’t want them to have Tuckshop, and your child could be missing out on the full healthy lunch that you have provided the money for.

Children’s crossings and School Crossing Supervisors

A familiar sight around schools is the School Crossing Supervisor. They ensure students and pedestrians who cross the road at the school crossing do so in a safe manner. They use a hand-held ‘stop’ sign to stop traffic and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.

Motorists must stop and wait until all pedestrians are no longer on the road and the School Crossing Supervisor has safely returned to the footpath. When children’s crossing flags are displayed, you must stop and give way to any pedestrians on or entering the crossing (regardless of whether a school crossing supervisor is present or not).

Your P&C are now using Flexischools to communicate important news and event information with you.To get alerted on P&C news, simply download the Flexischools App and log in or register to create an account.

Conquering kids’ techno-tantrums

Many of us have witnessed our kids or teens emotionally combust when asked to switch o their gaming console or put theirphone away. I colloquially call these ‘techno-tantrums’. Many of us fret that this signals that they’re ‘addicted’ to technology andfind ourselves worrying about why they behave in such intense ways.

So, what makes technology so psychologically appealing for kids and how can we help them to unplug so that screen-timedoesn’t end in scream time?

Technology is so appealing

Technology has been intentionally designed to cater for our kids’ most basic psychological drivers. As humans, our three mostbasic psychological needs are the need for connection, competence and control.

Technology caters for these needs in very clever ways. For example, our need for relational connection explains why many of ourboys are obsessed with multi-player video games and girls are infatuated with social media. These online tools have also beendesigned to help young people experience competency- gamers see tangible measures of their performance by their levels ofattainment, or battles won. Scrolling through YouTube and ‘selecting’ which video they’ll watch next also enables young peopleto experience a sense of control and agency over their lives – something they biologically crave.

Here’s what technology does to their brains and bodies

Digital technology impacts on children and young people in the following ways:

‘It feels good’

When our kids use a screen it’s usually a pleasurable experience for them. Their brains secrete the neurotransmitter dopamine, which makes them feel good. This means, when you demand that they turn the device o, you’re terminating their production ofdopamine (pleasure response).  It’s better to provide a choice of more appealing transition activities when you want them tomove away from a screen. For example, suggest that they ride their bike, or walk the dog aer they’ve switched o the device.

‘I want more’

The online world has no stopping cues, so our kids and teen never feel ‘complete’ or ‘done’. They can always refresh social media;continue to play to attain another level in a game; or watch another YouTube clip. This is also referred to as the state ofinsuiciency. One parenting tips that works is to give your children and teens hard end points. Rather than giving them a quantity of time (forexample, you can watch an hour of TV today), give them the finish time (for example, I’d like you to switch o the TV at 4:30pm). ‘It’s so novel’

Our brains are wired to seek out new and interesting stimulus. The online world is always instantly gratifying, fast-paced andrequires minimal cognitive eort. In comparison the oline, real world doesn’t always oer novelty. The real world is a lotslower-paced, and it’s not always instantly rewarding and interesting like our kids’ digital world.

Ensure your kids and teens have ample time to experience boredom. Our brains were never designed to be switched on andprocessing information as they are in the digital world. Opportunities for boredom allow the brain time to reset and help ourkids become accustomed to not always being ‘switched on’.
