The Russian Harp Society is based on a union of harpists and composers and we get new compositions for harp and harp ensembles every year. An invitation to adjudicate at the Poppy Harp Festival led me to the heart of Shakespeare’s Warwickshire. The Poppy Harp shop (www.poppyharp.com) is a unique harp hub run by harp-ist Fran Barsby. Entering the shop was the start of a magical weekend of music making.

This was a chance to perform at a harp competition. There were no requirements to worry about; just sign up and play a solo. I was seated on a sofa at the back of the room, thus avoiding the discomfort of sitting right in the sight-line of players. This created a beautifully relaxed atmosphere for all. Enthusiastic applause from proud parents reinforced what a fantastic opportunity this was for young musicians.

Classes ranged from junior “Budding Harpists” to advanced “Inspirational Harpists”. There was even a chance to play your own composition: “Inventive Harpists”. My favourite moment was the “Mini Maestros”. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, these tiny tots worked with Fran on some group improvisation and then were encouraged to play their solos. What a brilliant way to have your first experience of performing to an audience.

At the end of each session, I announced a winner and runner-up, with prizes being wire- string harp bracelets. In keeping with the whole weekend, positive comments were given on how to move forward to the next level, and there was a sense that everyone had been successful just by attending. Next was an Inspire Session, where I worked with the Poppy Harp Ensemble. We covered fun warm ups and worked on a graphic score, which we then played to parents.

Everyone left feeling inspired and vowing to return next year to perform again. Surely this should be a model for other com-petitions to build on: play a piece, get positive comments, leave feeling inspired, motivated and happy. Bravo to Poppy Harp!
