Argo - TechnologyArgo - Technology

• Iridium telecommunications ready– 25 Iridium floats operating

• Real-time under ice prototype (POPS)

• “Exotic” sensors tested (O2, acoustic wind/rain, fluorescence, optical plankton counter …)– Impact Argo core mission

• SST sensor could be added

Argo – Data ManagementArgo – Data Management• 2 channels of real time distribution:

– GTS of WMO– Internet from 2 Global Data Centres (GDACs)

• National Data Centres feed the GTS and 2 GDACs :Coriolis Server (IFREMER, France)GODAE Server (FNMOC, USA)

Coriolis CSIRO MEDS JMA CLS&SAI AOML BODC METRI/KMA INCOIS NMDIS UKMO – KORDI soon

• Standard Real-Time QC applied• Delayed-Mode QC being finalized (data available from

GDACs after delay of 6-12 months)• Regional Centres being established• Long Term Archival Centre established @ NODC, USA• CDROM being finalized (NODC)

12

Argo - ChallengesArgo - Challenges

• Financial: sustain funding• Technological: extend float lifetime• Logistical: maintain global coverage

• Transition from a pilot project to a sustained ocean observing system

• continuous collaboration between research and operational communities

AIC - BackgroundAIC - Background

• Established in Feb. 2001, Toulouse (France), within JCOMMOPS

• Became part of the Argo Project Office in 2003• Staffed with 1 Technical Coordinator (IOC employee)• Funded by Australia, Canada, France, UK and US

• Guidance by AST chair and APO Director (no more funded since June 2006)

• Close collaboration with IOC and WMO secretariats

• IOC Res. XX-6 implementation• International Technical Coordination

TC ActivitiesTC Activities

• 2001-2004: 50% on developments• 2004-2006: 10% …

• Information system finalized• Float database management rationalized:

• Weekly reports to float operators and data managers• Working time: 1 day/week + 1 day/month

• All floats (4000 deployed, 2500 active) are rigorously monitored

Argo – International issuesArgo – International issues

• Law of the sea (IOC/ABE-LOS)– Better and better thanks to bilateral collaborations– !!! They are looking to drifters !!!

• Donor programmes:– Achieved: Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Mauritius,

Brazil, Ireland, Chile– Ongoing: Ecuador, Rep. Dominican, Kenya– Caribbean Region

• Capacity building workshop in Ghana

Page 28: Argo & AIC Development Argo TC DBCP #22 La Jolla, California

Argo – International issuesArgo – International issues

• Beached floats– 1-2 %– Retrieval is a long process– Solution: send an expert

if needed– Good opportunity to strengthen

regional support
