COMPANY PROFILE Little Black Dress Creatives is an independent production company, born from the tenacity of a small group of rogue classical singers who wanted more. Founded by Brisbane-based performing arts professionals, LBD Creatives is driven by Company Director Alicia Cush and Producer Bethan Ellsmore, who are passionate about music and theatre that showcases talented artists in both niche works that defy genre convention, and high-quality corporate and concert performances that promote excellence in craft. Over the past three years, Little Black Dress Creatives has developed a reputation for its unique ability to present classical repertoire and vocal techniques in creative contemporary contexts. Previous productions, Aria moderna, Where the Wild Roses Grow and I Can Keep A Secret, have received acclaim for this distinct artistic voice and innovative fusion of styles. The collective has produced work for Adelaide Fringe Festival, Anywhere Theatre Festival and Brisbane Fringe Festival and presented at Brisbane Festival, Queensland Music Festival, Brisbane Cabaret Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Noosa Long Weekend. Objectives for touring The directors of Little Black Dress Creatives are driven and committed to touring their body of work throughout Queensland and Australia. At the core of creating productions of artistic excellence and integrity, born from passion for the operatic art form, are the fundamental goals that the content of our work is accessible for a wide range of audiences, highly entertaining and easily-tourable. As well as performing in traditional theatres, the company has always had a focus on devising and staging site-specific and site-responsive work in unconventional spaces, including past performances in a boxing ring, an abandoned warehouse and various gallery spaces. 2014 marks the fourth year that the company has been involved with the Anywhere Theatre Festival and their announcement as Creative Partners with the festival. Accessibility of artistic content is paramount and removal of the ʻfourthʼ wall of theatre is essential. The artists are passionate about sharing their unique creative voice, whether it be in a proscenium theatre one night and an acoustic performance in a small hall the next. ABOUT THE SHOW SHOW SYNPOSIS Aria moderna is an evocative site-responsive performance where the operatic aria is revised, refreshed and renewed for contemporary eyes and ears. In a spectacle of light and sound, urban projection art accompanies a rich electro-opera soundscape masterminded by Brisbaneʼs most innovative classical singers and finest electronic producers. Three ethereal voices perform to a soundtrack of contemporary collaborators from a Burton-esque film composer; electro-pop songstress and hip hop beat-maker through to dubstep prince and four-to-the-floor house duo. Exchanging the orchestra for laptop, the blue alien is brought to the concert stage; Handel meets a dance beat, Purcell gets experimental and Tchaikovsky sips a coffee at the Cafe del Mar. Performed in both traditional and non-traditional spaces, theatre sets are replaced with urban projection art design; cast on drop curtain, laneway brick wall, warehouse

or cave rock face. Modern interpretations of operatic scenery have been developed specifically to complement each sonic vignette for a mesmeric experience. This genre-defying work melds opera, animation, live vocal manipulation and physical theatre, exploring operaʼs finest melodies in chronological order from Monteverdiʼs LʼOrfeo, through to Madame Butterfly and Gershwinʼs ʻSummertimeʼ. Aria moderna is space-adaptable, easily portable and able to be shaped into varied venues and time constraints in collaboration with the artists. This is a truly unique work featuring the talents of 11 young Queensland -based emerging artists. HISTORY OF THE SHOW

• Anywhere Theatre Festival 2013, Turbine Platform Brisbane Powerhouse – May 8-10

• Anywhere Theatre Festival 2013, State Library of Queensland (work in development – Concert Pilot) – May 17

Show Background – Notes from the Creative Director Aria moderna was created in 2013, specifically for the Gallery space at the State Library of Queensland as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival. This one-off and sold out performance was first presented ʻin concertʼ and featured the four singers of Belladiva with a combination of electronica tracks and live accompaniment by classical guitarist Joel Woods in-the-round. Creative Director Alicia Cush commissioned six local producers/programmers to work in collaboration to take traditional operatic arias and re-imagine the music in an electronic context. Following the performance, there was a clear vision for the future direction of the work. Both the aural and visual elements needed to fuse with the music to create a truly cohesive and entertaining work. From the outset of this creative development, the focus has been to create and deliver a flexible and easily tourable work that can be site-responsive. All the involved artists have had a keen interest in the collaborative creation of a work with great artistic integrity, longevity and these above aims in mind. In 2014, the work has been through a period a creative development with a director/choreographer (Lisa Faʼalafi) to devise highly stylised movement; two animators (Elle Reid and Luke Brohman) to generate artwork stemming from the original operatic sources, and a sound designer (Andrew Snook) to create a series of sound effects for live vocal manipulation. Furthermore, there has also been the creation of minimalistic costuming and set design and the commission of two new electronic tracks by Stephanie Ganfield and Willem Bakker. AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT OVERVIEW Community engagement opportunities associated with this touring work will involve two different workshops, directed at members of our target audience/demographic. These workshops will focus on improving the vocal skills and vocal music appreciation of locals, in a format and with experienced professionals that is not normally accessible. It is hoped that these activities will build a stronger relationship between artist and audience and encourage the audience to become more invested with the artists and work. Objectives – Improve the individual vocal skills of young, amateur and community singers to strengthen the local music community, including involvement in choirs, musical societies and school groups. WORKSHOP #1 - DESCRIPTION / DETAILS Advanced Vocal Masterclass – The Art of Auditioning This 2-hour workshop/masterclass will help demystify what can be a daunting process – the audition; professional and amateur theatre productions, vocal examinations, performances and entry into tertiary institutions. Run by musical director/performer Alicia Cush and performer Bethan Ellsmore, this workshop will give young singers the techniques to deal with the most challenging musical audition, providing a basic introduction to audition techniques and preparation. This will be followed by an interactive masterclass, where each student will give a mock audition and receive constructive musical and performance feedback; from style and interpretation, repertoire choice, movement and introductions to singing technique and musical accuracy. Participants should expect to learn adequate knowledge and skills to better prepare for any style of audition and gain important performance experience and confidence in front of a mock panel and live audience.

Participants are required to provide sheet music or high quality backing track for the pianist to play at the masterclass (this may be required in advance). Requirements: Piano or keyboard if available (this can be provided by the company) Note: Local pianist/accompanist may be hired in each area COST $390.00 total for the presenter OR $40.00 per participant (minimum 10 singers) TARGET AUDIENCE FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Secondary school age students, young adults, amateur singers Experienced singers (not suitable for absolute beginners) The target audience will be reached through specific promotion to local schools, music schools and music societies. WORKSHOP #2 - DESCRIPTION / DETAILS Hitting the High Notes - Introduction to basic singing technique for the amateur singer This 2-hour workshop explores the most mysterious instrument of all; the voice. Learn the fundamental elements of vocal technique through group exercises in an informative and practical, but relaxed group environment. Participants will learn elements of postural alignment, breathing technique, basic physiology, vowel shapes, resonance, range and more, as taught in leading tertiary institutions. Run by musical director/performer Alicia Cush and performer Bethan Ellsmore, this workshop will give young singers basic general knowledge, vocal health tips, introductory technical exercises and the confidence to further explore the possibilities of their voices. The workshop is ideal for choral groups, school and community ensembles, and would be greatly suited to be conducted during a regular rehearsal time. The information presented is also greatly suitable and appropriate for music/choral teachers and conductors as professional development. Participants are not required to provide anything and will be supplied with any music learned. Each session will conclude with question time for specific requests and technical questions. Requirements: Piano or keyboard if available (this can be provided by the company) Note: Local pianist/accompanist may be hired in each area COST $390 total for the presenter OR $40 per participant for small groups (minimum 10 participants) TARGET AUDIENCE FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Primary school age students, Secondary school age students, young adults, amateur singers, choral groups (Singers in primary school age bracket to only participate in a young voices workshop – not suitable to mix with older participants) Suitable for beginner to intermediate singers The target audience will be reached through specific promotion to local schools, music schools and music societies.

Reviewed by: Sharon Keinonen on Friday 17 May 2013

Belladiva graced the State Library for a one-night only performance as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival with their new work Aria Moderna.

Combining elements of cabaret, recital and staged concert presentation, the program features modern versions of music from Purcell, Handel, Monteverdi, Delibes, Mascagni and Faure, exchanging the grand piano for a laptop and drum machine.

This was a collaborative effort by several bodies demonstrating classic opera melodies set to a techno beat. Dubbed ‘electro opera’ this was a fine blend of beautiful voices and modern tempos. Classed as ‘roving entertainment’, the audience was treated to a mix of amplified beat box sounds, acoustic renditions, multi-directional harmonies and a varied programme.

The show was staged in collaboration with The Anywhere Theatre Festival which is a Brisbane based not-for-profit company with a vision to “propel a world-wide trend for exciting, engaging, passionate theatre anywhere but traditional theatre spaces”.

Whilst this is good in theory, and may lend itself to wonderful atmospheric performances and intimate gatherings, sometimes the logistics of such things are problematic. The State Library venue is classed as a sitting/standing venue, but that was not much consolation when half the audience turned up and realised that there were not enough chairs for the amount of people attending, and that they had to stand for forty-five minutes or so to watch the performance. (However, the organisers did find some more chairs to seat about two thirds of the audience.)

Aside from that, the ladies from Belladiva: Bethan Ellsmore, Laura Coutts, Michelle Bull & Alicia Cush were entrancing. With impeccable grooming and soaring voices, the girls put on an evening that was a treat for all attending.

The roving, whilst keeping it varied, was a little distracting at times, as was the use of microphones in some of the numbers, and inconsistent lighting. However, production values aren’t really the focus of the Anywhere Theatre Festival so we can forgive these discrepancies in the spirit of emerging artists working in non-theatrical environments.

And although the programme was a little abstract, overall it was a most enjoyable evening by Belladiva (and young guitarist Joel Woods), as they twisted the traditional opera sound into something a little experimental, a bit different, and a lot entertaining.!

REVIEW: Aria Moderna MAY 19, 2013 / REVIEWS

Belladiva and Little Black Dress Productions present ARIA MODERNA as part of Anywhere Theatre Festival ! Venue: The Gallery, State Library of Queensland ! Duration: 60 minutes In Aria Moderna, opera goes electric. Styled in blood-red gowns, the four sopranos of Belladiva channel operaʼs heroines from the earliest decades of the art-form to the present. Belladiva are Bethan Ellsmore, Alicia Cush, Laura Coutts and Michelle Bull. Theyʼve been exploring the boundaries of pop opera since 2008 and have a dedicated following. It was standing room only for this one night performance. Superbly aided and abetted by their musical collaborators, the emotive and narrative core of each piece has been explored, challenged and re-presented for the contemporary audience. The opening number Pur ti miro from Monteverdiʼs The Coronation of Poppea(1643) received a modern makeover: a lush house track by Maberley and Petein, verses sung in English by Bethan and the main duet theme in Italian became the chorus. In Paradis/The Bell Song (Leo Delibes, 1883), Maberley and Petein create a sonic forest in prelude to the ringing of Lakmeʼs magic bell as she saves Vishnu from wild beasts. Each collaboration brings a new and gorgeous electro-pop dimension to the arias. Kathryn McKeeʼs track evokes the exotic as Laura channels the beauteous dancer La Charmeuse (Massenet, 1894); Nuxe places Madama Butterfly amongst cherry blossoms as she waits for the return of her lover in One Beautiful Day (Puccini, 1904); Stephanie Ganfieldʼs track breaks the heart as Dido (Alicia), abandoned by Aeneas, prepares to mount the funeral pyre (Purcell, 1688); and, Sammsonite lays tracks fit for Queens – Cleopatra in Il destino (Handel, 1722) and the Queens of Spades in Arcadia (Tchaikovsky, 1890). Acoustic interludes are accompanied by recent Conservatorium graduate, Joel Woods, on guitar. Bethan and Laura in The Two Faces of Gretchen hauntingly explore Gretchenʼs troubled infatuation for Faust (Schubert, 1814), and, in the standout closing number, El Fauno (Navarrete, 2006), Belladiva take us deep into Panʼs Labyrinth as a young girl tries to survive fascist Spain. The concert was conducted in the round – not in the centre of the audience – but by creating stage spaces on three walls so we rotated to face them. This allowed for some more intimate settings than a large stage for some pieces. Belladiva excite with their vocal harmonies, technical excellence and dramatic polished delivery accompanied by the rich sonic landscapes of their collaborators. One night only is not enough. Performance seen: 17 May Review: Shirley Way from Brisbane 2 Bay. Check out her blog and other reviews here.
