ON THE COVER: Arlington Mill’s Photography Interest Group continues with fun excersions to U Street, Dupont Circle, and other areas. This picture, taken by member of the group Steven Wertime, displays wonderful Fall colors. Pictured in the center is Didem Lenz, the volunteer who coordinates the “Photo Safaris” by communicating with participants and mapping out the walks. This photo is from a safari to Georgetown the group took in No-vember of 2016. If you are interested in being apart of future pho-to safaris, please contact the main center line at 703-228-7369.
Arlington Mill Senior Center recently launched a new program entitled “Knitting at Night” , a social group that welcomes anyone interested in crochet, knitting, or any other needle craft. There are many knitting groups throughout the county, however none of them meet in the evening. Group members range from beginner to experienced, and volunteer Kim Luberto is happy to welcome and assist any newcomers. The group started strong on Thursday, July 5 with about 5 members, and hopes to grow. The group meets every Thursday evening at 6:30pm.
We are so excited to welcome a new Line Dancing class to its new permanent time frame of Thursday Afternoons, 1-2pm. Line Dancing is a popular recreational activity among the 55+. It is easy for beginners, lots of fun and no partner is needed. Suzie Pratt and Judi Garth will welcome and instruct, and there is no fee associated. We will see you out on the dance floor!
Arlington Mill is excited to welcome a group of Nursing Stu-dents from Georgetown. These students will spend every Thurs-day with us throughout their fall semester. Their goal is improve public health by getting to know the older adult population, and discover what is needed. Towards the end of their stay, they will provide presentations and education material that best suits our participants at Arlington Mill. In addition to their health support, we are excited for them to get to know us by participating in our programs and having some fun alone the way. Please help us in making them feel welcome to our wonderful center.
Arabic class has returned! Join Malac Kadri in room 411 on Thurs-days at 11:45 to learn basics of the Arabic language. This class is for beginners and is currently welcoming first time attendees. If you are interested in joining, feel free to drop in any Thursday to give the class a try. Newcomers are welcome!
Spanish Conversation has moved to Monday at 11:45am! The new home will be room 413.

Storytime: Seniors And Kids Together Arlington Mill Community Center, 909 S. Dinwiddie St., Rooms 527 A&B
Thursdays, Sept. 21-Nov. 16, 10:45a.m.
Bring seniors and children together through the joy of stories and songs • A partnership between Arlington Public Library and Parks & Recreation, Office of Senior Adult Programs.
Want to join the fun? contact us at 703-228-7369.
If you find yourself at Arligton Mill on a Thursday morn-ing, and head upstairs to room 527, you will find one of the most exciting new programs here at Arlington Mill.
As you may or may not know, Arlington Mill is home to seniors programs, but also many other unique programs that serve different ages. While the majority of the time these programs “do their own thing” recently a great new program has formed to bring them together from an unlikely source.
Arlington Public Library has partnered with Arlington Mill Community and Senior Center to bring a program to draw ages together in one activity, known as Story Time.
Every Thursday, a group of Seniors get together, sing songs, play music, and tell stories to children ages 1-5. These chil-dren come from Project Family, Early Head-start, and Pint-Size Playtime, 3 programs that also call Arlington Mill home. Through storytelling and the love of literacy, everyone leaves with a smile.

Healthy Eating Tips for Seniors
Spotlight on:Flu Season!
1. Know what a healthy plate looks like. Every meal should represent each of the five food groups - fruits,
vegetables, dairy, grains, and protein.
2. Look for important nutrients. Try to choose a variety of foods, for your healthy meal: try whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein! Look for
foods that are high in fiber and low in sodium.
3. Read the nutrition labels. The healthiest foods are whole foods, those that are found in the produce, meat and dairy sections of grocery stores. When eat-ing packaged foods, be sure to look for items that are
low in fat, sugar, and sodium.
4. Stay hydrated. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated! Drink fluids like water, coffee, and tea throughout
the day.
Flu season is almost upon us and the best way to protect yourself is by getting your flu shot! Did you know that seniors 65 years of age and older are at an increased risk of developing complications from the flu? The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu shot by the end of October each year. Protect yourself and your loved ones this flu season by getting vaccinated!
Learn about more healthy tips reccommended from the NCOA by visiting www.ncoa.org
Learn more about flu season and the flu vaccina-tion from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) at www.cdc.gov/flu
suggested donation of $2 for trans-portation and a suggested $2 dona-tion for the meal.
How often do I come? Its up to you. You can come as fre-quently as 5 days a week, or as little as a few days a month. As long as you let the congregate meal coordinator know a week ahead of time the dates you plan on attendind so meals and transportation can be ordered.
Sounds good, but could it be better? While we are extreamly proud of the positive feedback we receive about the program, we want to contine to get even better. We have recently made imporvements to the meals to include fresh fruits and vegetables, and be on the lookout for a new name soon.
I’m sold, how do I join?Call us or come by, and we will sched-ule an appointment for you to register for the program. We look forward to meeting with you!
Members also recieve transportationservices to and from the center via Red Top Cab, and a catered hot lunch.
Who can participate?Anyone over the age of 60 and lives in Arlington County can be a mem-ber. There are no restrictions realted to income.
What does it cost? The program is funded though the Area Agency on Aging, and supple-mented by Arlington County. Outside of the 55+ pass, the only costs associ-ated with the program are a daily
Many who are new to Arlington Mill Senior Center often wonder about the difference of the Congregate Meal program and 55+.
What is Congregate Meal?Congregate Meal is a program that is facilitated by Arlington’s Department of Parks and Recreation, and offer’s lunch and transportation services to participants over the age of 60 who wish to participate. Members of con-gregate meal must already be mem-bers of the 55+ program, therefore they receive the same access to pro-grams within the 55+ guide.
