Dear Armadale Community Why is Community important? The word ‘community’ is often associated with school but what does this mean and what is needed to create it? There are many definitions but as a school community, have we defined what it means to be part of the Armadale Primary School Community? According the Department of Education, a positive sense of community promotes the wellbeing of children, families and staff and exists when everyone:
promotes mental health and wellbeing
engages in warm, responsive and caring relationships that foster feelings of security
has a sense of belonging within the setting and therefore feels included and valued for who they are
acknowledges and respects diversity. Another definition is: “Sense of community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through their commitment to be together (McMillan, 1976). Therefore what is it that we are doing to promote a positive sense of community? Harmony Day What a wonderful way to bring parents, teachers, students and the wider community together to celebrate diversity and share stories of culture. It was lovely to hear children share their language with us and to listen to the immigration stories our Year 5/6 students shared from
interviewing people from the Regis Aged Care Armadale. Not only were the children and teachers dressed in clothes of cultural heritage but we also had several parents who dressed up in the most beautiful outfits.
Reporting Focus Group We are committed to strengthening the home/school partnership so that we optimize the learning growth of all our learners. In order to do this, we have established a ‘Reporting Focus Group’ that is comprised of parents and teachers. The main objective of the group is to provide recommendations to improve the reporting process at our school. We have only met once but parents and teachers in this group are experimenting with various strategies. Collaboration is the key to ensuring success of this group however we realised that there was one group that was missing in this process – the students. We will be meeting in May again and hopefully with the presence of some students too. Tomorrow’s Leaders for Sustainability This group share a passion for our

school environment currently stands with regards to promoting sustainability and then collaboratively develop a proposal to make it better. This plan will then be taken to Facilities Committee, which also comprises of parents and teachers, who will consider it within the process of devising a whole school Master Plan to improve our outdoor spaces. I am so excited about this as are many members of our community. PFA This parent body work tirelessly to raise funds for the school. Selling healthy icy poles on Fridays, collecting donations to make Easter hampers and then to raffle these are just some of the current projects that this group are focussing on. Besides the fact that this group donate their time and energy to raising money for the school, they are also promoting a sense of community membership, and the sharing of an emotional connection through the relationships that are developed. An opportunity has been offered to us by a grandparent of the school community. The aim of this fundraiser is not only to raise funds for the school but to promote a sense of belonging. Please support, “MONASH in Love and War”. This is professionally performed at Chapel Off Chapel on the evening of 3 May 2018 exclusively for the Armadale Primary community. The evening is shaping as a great night out, and a terrific
opportunity to learn about the fascinating private life of arguably the greatest of all Australians. Tickets are $47.50 each, and all profits on tickets sold to the members of the school community are being donated to the school. We encourage you to buy tickets as soon as possible, and before Easter, because tickets not sold by Easter are likely to be offered to the public. Tickets can be bought at: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=355130&. Classroom Reps These parents are crucial in maintaining the strong sense of community we have at our school. Their role is to liaise with teachers, PFA and parents which is integral to the interconnecting web of membership. We are in the consultative process of reflecting and redefining the classroom rep’s role to strengthen our sense of community. Watch this space for updates. We all play a role in building a positive sense of community. Reflection is crucial. Is there something you could do now or tomorrow or even next week to promote a positive sense of community at APS?

Performing Arts & Visual Arts Harmony Day
Congratulations Vita on another fantastic HARMONY DAY!
Learning a foreign language through singing has so many benefits. It helps to reinforce known words and it introduces students to more sophisticated vocabulary. Learning to recite phrases that are more complex provides students with the opportunity to practise their pronunciation.
It is always great to see the older students join in and remember the lyrics to some of the songs they may have sung when they were younger. Singing familiar songs is a positive and valuable experience. Music helps people connect and for many communities and families
it is a time of happy memories. Thanks again Vita for promoting music in your Italian lessons and sharing an insight into the music of another culture. The Prep – Grade 2 students enjoyed learning different dances during their, ‘Viva a cultural dance experience’, including The Tarantella from Italy and the Flamenco from Spain. It was interesting to discuss with the students how a story can be told through different media – in this case dance. A number of students, were very proud and keen to share music from their cultural background. Ishita from Grade 2 confidently sang the Indian national anthem to her
class, who were very impressed and listened attentively. DON’T MISS OUT: Armadale Primary’s collaborative art installation Everyone in our school community - students, teachers, all staff, parents, cleaners and crossing supervisors - is encouraged to draw a self portrait and add it to the display near the office. Please take some paper home and have fun drawing. The more faces the better! The paper is located near the ‘sign in’ screen at the school entrance. Helpers required Would any parents have time to record the chemicals stored in the art room? Schools are mandated by the Department of Education to keep an OHS record of all their materials on site. If you can help please email me [email protected] Your help would be greatly appreciated! Senior Singing Group (S.S.G.) Years 3-6 Congratulations SSG on your tremendous first performance for 2018! You entertained our wonderful audience with some great singing and super choreography. Next week we will start learning some new songs. Could all SSG members please bring a plastic A4 file folder to hold their music? If you have any queries please contact either myself or Rosanna. Sports and Health & Wellbeing Crazy Hair & Footy Colours Day Tuesday 27th March
The first fundraising event we have coming up is Crazy Hair Day! It will be held next Tuesday 27th March. This is part of the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for The Leukemia Foundation. The students are asked to bring a $2 donation and to come to school with crazy hair. Ray Skinner, father of Aidin Skinner in 5/6B, underwent treatment for leukemia three and a half years ago and will have his head shaved at 11.00am.This will be a great day to support a great cause. Charlie, Alex, Grace, Cyril (SRC) & Genevieve Trewin (5/6 teacher and SRC Adviser) Our annual ‘Footy Colours Day will be also be held on 27th March 2018’
We are looking forward to celebrating the 2018 AFL season on this day. Please wear your favourite AFL team colours for our special parade on the 27th March from 9:00am-9:45am. Marcus, Matilda & Nina (Sports Captains) & Mr Cracknell Please refer to page 5 for more details about these two exciting events. Information was also distributed to all children today.
Years 5&6 T20 Blast Cricket gala day tomorrow Friday 23 March
We are looking forward to a great day for the Years 5&6 students at tomorrow’s Cricket gala day to be held at Fawkner Park. Children need to be at school at 8.50am.
E Smart Cyberbullying Workshop & Parent Information Session On Tuesday 27th March a Cyberbullying workshop will be held with the year 5 & 6 children. This workshop is run by the Allanah & Madeleine Foundation and is designed to provide an opportunity for children to learn how to use the internet safely at school and at home. Information is on Compass. An information evening for parents will be held on Tuesday 27th March from 6:30pm-7:30pm in the MPC. Buddies In recent weeks,
the students in years 1-4 have partnered up with another
class and have been enjoying activities together and getting to know one another. Following on from the success of the traditional Prep and Year 6 Buddy Program, each year we encourage all classes to adopt a similar approach. The Buddy Program at APS
is an effective way of further enhancing the school values of kindness, respect and excellence that we continually strive for. The article below details further benefits of a buddy program for children. Look out for further information about Buddies throughout the year.

A big Thank You to all parents and kids for all your help with watering and sweeping these past few dry weeks. Our Prep gardeners have been busy harvesting 'Sunny the sunflower’, as well as the beans and corn and digging up the soil in the containers. They even found some potatoes! ‘Sunny’ spent some time drying out inside the Prep building and the Preps have scooped out the seeds and stored them to replant in Spring. This week they have planted new veggies for autumn - carrots, peas and radishes - and made signs to show which seeds are planted. Their next job will be to build a pea trellis for the sugar snap peas and sweet peas to climb on. Thanks to parents for helping with planting, donating seedlings and providing compost and chook poo for our garden. Now we just need rain!

Parents & Friends for Armadale (PFA) Hi everyone, Hot Cross Bun collection Thank you to everyone who ordered their yummy Philippa’s hot cross buns through the PFA. With your help, we raised $541.34! A very special thank you to Emily Gardner for managing the Hot Cross Bun drive with the help of and Fiona Madden-Jones – much appreciated! Remember to collect your buns this Friday 23rd March from the quadrangle/stage area between 2.30pm and 3.45pm. Enjoy! Easter Hampers As I was delivering plain cardboard boxes to each classroom last week, it was fun to hear that there’s some friendly (or fierce!) competition amongst some of the teachers to be the winner of this year’s Easter Hamper box decorating competition! It’s such a fun activity for the kids to be involved in, and we wish each class best of luck with the competition! In Rochelle’s absence, Connie will be judging the top 3 winning boxes on Monday 26th March. Reminder - this Friday 23rd March by 10am is your last chance to make a donation for the Hampers. The huge box in Reception is filling up nicely, however with 16 Hamper boxes to fill, we could still do with a few more goodies please! Raffle tickets will be available to purchase to win one of the top 3 winning hampers from this Thursday 22nd March to Thursday 29th March, from 8.45am to 9.15am, and 3.15pm to 3.45pm each day from. You’ll find our friendly volunteers in the quadrangle. Tickets are 1 for $2, or 3 for $5, and the prizes will be drawn at the final assembly on the last day of term.

Mother’s Day lunch Sarah Alder and her team of volunteers have been hard at work organising a very special Mother’s Day Lunch to be held at the beautiful Royal South Yarra Tennis club on Friday 4th May at 12pm. It will be a wonderful afternoon of mums celebrating themselves and each other. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know some of the other mums from your year level, and meet some new mums that you pass by in the school yard! Cost is $80 per head and includes a drink on arrival, 2 course meal, tea/coffee and a small donation towards the PFA fundraising efforts.
