THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL PLATFORM

FFG has created an armoured support vehicle to meet the extremely high and rapidly changing demands of modern battlefields. The WISENT 2 is designed to meet the modern asymmetric threats of the urban battlefield and to be prepared to cope with future mission threats. The multifunctional design of the WISENT 2 enables unprecedented flexibility, opera-tional efficiency, cost effectiveness and enhanced tactical mobility, extending the range of capabilities for commanders on operations.

The WISENT 2 is the world’s most modern multifunc-tional Leopard 2 Support Vehicle, configured as an Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV) or an Armoured Engineer Vehicle (AEV). It is based on the interna-tionally deployed Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank (MBT), which is one of the most successful tracked vehicles in service. The WISENT 2 benefits from being a technically mature and combat proven system both on operations and exercises, proving itself to be extremely manoeuvrable, powerful and reliable in battle.

The WISENT 2 can be delivered either as newly built vehicle or by conversion of used and fully refurbished Leopard 2 MBT chassis. The conversion starts with the disassembly and modification of a standard Leo- pard 2 MBT. Extensive welding work and the integra-tion of a state-of-the-art crew compartment including high-level protection is followed by the installation of a modern hydraulic system. The result is a highly flexible multifunctional platform providing full battle-field support with MBT performance that has never before been achieved by this class of vehicle.

ARMOURED RECOVERY OR ENGINEER VEHICLE – FLEXIBLE THROUGH CONVERSION

The WISENT 2 is a multifunctional platform deploy-able as an Armoured Recovery or an Armoured Engineer Vehicle. The WISENT 2 can be quickly and flexibly converted with appropriate equipment for each mission.

WISENT 2 ARMOURED RECOVERY VEHICLE (ARV)

When configured as an Armoured Recovery Vehicle, the WISENT 2’s role in battle is to recover and to tow damaged equipment into a field workshop for repair. The WISENT 2 ARV is designed to carry a Leopard 2 MBT power pack or turret on its rear rack and is used for lifting heavy loads such as engines and turrets under field conditions. The WISENT 2 ARV is equipped with a powerful crane boom and winch designed for loads up to 32 tons. The main winch provides a maximum constant straight pull force of 400 kN. For minor recovery tasks a maxi-mum constant straight pull force of 30 kN is per-mitted by an auxiliary winch. The Combat Recovery System CRS® allows quick recovery and towing of objects under armoured protection.

WISENT 2 ARMOURED ENGINEER VEHICLE (AEV)

The WISENT 2 AEV is an innovative vehicle for mili-tary engineer missions, and can be used to assist in the creation, development and clearance of main supply routes and access points for water crossing and bridge approach routes. The WISENT 2 AEV is also used to remove or establish obstacles and barri-cades on the battlefield.

The WISENT 2 AEV provides a modern excavator system as well as a high performance dozer blade. With its 1.3 cubic metre excavator bucket, the WISENT 2 AEV achieves an unrivalled digging per-formance up to 300 cubic metres per hour with a working depth of up to 4.4 metres and reaches more than 9 metres.

WISENT 2 MINE CLEARANCE

The WISENT 2 platform can be equipped with a mine-breaching capacity in both ARV and AEV configuration. In place of the dozer blade, a full width mine plough or other implements can be attached extending the operational performance. The mine-breaching kit consists of Full Width Mine Plough, High Lift Adapter, Safe Lane Marking Sys-tem and Magnetic Signature Duplicator.

REFITTING IN LESS THAN 5 HOURS

The key innovation of the new WISENT 2 Support Vehicles is the multifunctional platform, permitting a conversion between both systems, ARV to AEV and vice versa, in less than 5 hours – even on opera-tions. This performance is achieved due to universal connection points developed by FFG. The crane boom and the excavator arm can be substituted just as easily as the front-mounted dozer blade or mine plough, whereas the intelligent hydraulic and elec-trical system of the vehicle detects the connected equipment automatically.

INNOVATIVE AND ADAPTABLE PROTECTION

A significant feature of the WISENT 2 is the upgrad-ed and adaptable armour protection. Even with basic specifications, the crew is ballistically protected up to NATO STANAG 4569 threat level 5, achieved through the low angle armour design and spall liner covering the interior of the crew compartment re-ducing behind armour effects. Using standardised attachment points the basic armour can be quickly upgraded by the addition of bar/slat armour, enhanced protection systems or ERA (Explosive Reactive Armour) to provide additional protection against Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG). Enhanced mine and Improved Explosive Device (IED) protection is achieved by a second armoured plate integrated in the chassis, leaving the ground clearance unchanged. The integrated mine protection has the highest pro-tection level, up to level 4A and 4B.

RELIABILITY

The WISENT 2 not only offers full MBT support and mission flexibility, it is also highly reliable and has minimum Life Cycle Cost. The WISENT 2 ARV and AEV are 95 % logistically identical and benefit from easily accessible and common spares reducing Life Cycle Costs.

INTELLIGENT HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRONIC SYSTEM

A key enhancement to the WISENT 2 is the specially developed intelligent hydraulic and electronic system. Designed by FFG, this advanced hydraulic and elec-tronic architecture ensures that the operator can switch roles and task attachments quickly and easily between specific missions with confidence and built in reliability.

MLC 80 CAPABILITY

The WISENT 2 can be delivered in MLC 80 configu-ration with reinforced running gear components

enabling a technical gross weight of up to 69,500 kg. This innovation on the Leopard 2 chassis annuls all former weight limitations of the MLC 70 design and provides a significant growth potential in unallocated weight permitted on the vehicle. By removing the former weight constraints new and enriching upgrades are possible.

FUNCTIONAL TOOLS

WISENT 2 can host multiple attachments for a wide variety of military tasks to achieve its mission. As well as the crane and the excavator system, the WISENT 2 is designed to attach full width mine ploughs, safe lane marking systems, mine rollers, and different types of dozer/engineering blades using a specially designed high lift adapter. In addition, devices such as miniature flails, milling heads, concrete cutters, earth augers, etc. can also be attached to the excavator arm by a quick coupling system under armoured protection. To enhance the military capability of the vehicle, Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) tools can be easily integrated and bespoke equipment can be made on request.
