IMPORTANT DATES Fri 15 Sept Final Day of Term 3 Tue 3 Oct First Day of Term 4 FROM THE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members, There are quite a few celebrations of learning this week to wrap our teaching experiences for the term. Yesterday our Prep students participated in their Fairly Tale Ball. It was great to see them enjoying a celebration to complete their work on Fairy Tales. Many students, their teachers and parents dressed up and enjoyed some feasting from a banquet. Year 4 students will present their drama plays today and tomorrow. Year 6 have a Harry Potter Day to conclude their literature studies and Year 3 will visit St Stephen's Cathedral and Mary MacKillop Shrine. I am sure the students will enjoy these activities as much as the prep students enjoyed theirs. Date Claimer - Trivia Night – Friday 20 October Please read the attached flyer regarding the upcoming Trivia Night. It will be a fun filled night. It would be terrific to see as many people as possible attend. APPA Conference I will be attending the Australian Primary Principals Conference from Wednesday to Friday this week. In my absence, Mr Brian Mason will be deputizing for me. End of Term This is the last week of Term 3, we return to school on Tuesday 3 October. Our Pupil Free Day in Term 4 is Monday 16 October. Staff will be attending a Spirituality Day on this day. With best wishes for a lovely holiday, Carolyn As you may recall since the start of 2017 St Rita's and specifically, Prep Year 1 and Year 2 Teachers have been involved in a Brisbane Catholic Education initiative to Accelerate Literacy Learning (ALL). One aspect of this involves teachers regularly meeting to look at student learning data and then collaborating with the school curriculum team to plan engaging literacy learning activities which will accelerate each students growth in literacy. Last week we met as a P-2 team and one foci was analysis of current P-2 reading data. There was significant progress for students in literacy and reading across Prep, Year 1 and Year 2. We have highly skilled, dedicated and talented teachers working with your children to achieve Accelerated Literacy Learning at St Rita's. We are very proud of the students for their persistence and progress with ready so far this year. I anticipate the acceleration in progress will continue across term 4. Last week I mentioned Year 5 had been reading and creating poetry. Below are a few of the favourites the students have enjoyed. An example of an alliterative verse in “Peeping Possum" and some symbolic characterization in "Recycla Bill". The students explored comparisons in "A hero to a lion" and "A peaceful city to a war torn city." Cats by Eleanor Farjeon, this is a favorite topic for Mrs Hay. Some other poems were Mind the Step by Max Fatchen; Sir Smasham Uppe by E.V. Rieu and If you don't put your shoes on by Michael Rosen. Representative Singlets

All students who have been involved in representative sport this year whether Cross Country or Athletics please return their singlets to Mr Kenyon as soon as possible. Please ensure they are washed and secured in a bag with your name printed on it so that they are all accounted for.

GRASS TICKS

It has been bought to our attention that there appears to be some grass ticks in the school gardens and grassed areas. They are small and black. Please be aware and look for possible signs on your children. With the change of weather we are definitely heading into the time of year to be more aware of such insect and bugs etc.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Brisbane Writer’s Festival What an amazing experience it was to visit the Brisbane Writer’s Festival with 14 of our year 3 and year 4 students on Thursday! Hearing of Wia Chim’s cultural motivations that inspired her to write her books, along with Jackie French’s passion for history being intertwined through fiction, was a remarkably memorable opportunity for the students and teachers alike! I thank the students for representing St Rita’s with respect and pride, and Mrs Rossi who joined us for the day and purchased many of the author’s books for our library! Please see below for 2 accounts of the students’ experiences below. ‘On Thursday the book club people went on an excursion to the Brisbane Writer’s festival with Mrs Anderson and Mrs Rossi. There were lots of schools there! Wai Chim and Jackie French were the authors speaking to us. Wai Chim told us all about her writing and how she gets her ideas. She talked about her culture and her family and how they gave her good ideas for her books. Jackie French spoke to us about her books also. Afterwards we went to GOMA and made a mask out of paper. Both authors inspired me to become an author. I also learnt that you can turn non-fiction into fiction. This is known as ‘fibtion’ to Christa Bell (The author who visited St Rita’s during Book Week). This trip was the best trip ever!’ Alysha H, 3T. ‘Diary of a Wombat is Jackie French’s most popular book. Mothball the wombat has another adventure in Christmas Wombat Diary. Both books are an award winning duo. Wai Chim taught us about the story arc, character arc, history arc and real life arc. Next, Jackie French taught us about history and told us a crazy story’. Lachlan, 3T.
